That’s looking great EddieDean!

Quick question though,
I’m not sure but, have you added any addition panning to the shots I did? Cause I based the animations around some more subtle panning that I had key-framed to be just enough to make it work. Maybe it might look a little better if there wasn’t any more significant movement across the shots? I understand that you probably want to show as much of each image as possible since the aspect ratio needed to be shrunk, but I think it would work better without.

Can’t wait to show you guys the next batch of images!

For Nightsisters, what would people think of adding “Massacre” as the grand finale? I know it’s technically/chronologically considered a separate story; but I felt during my recent rewatch that thematically, it’s tied very closely to the main “trilogy.” It definitely feels more connected to the main Nightsisters arc than to “Bounty” (which comes next, according to the official guide). Adding it to this story would make it more of a finale for this chapter in Ventress’s life, and it allows for more time for her to move on before we see her next in her new role.

That being said, that would make this the first four-part adaptation in your series, correct? Is it too early in the show to be making episodes that are that long?

Yeah, it was related to the aspect ratio, it needs to be 1680x816. Happy for you to release at that ratio, or I can tweak your outputs once I have them - your call.

I think it’s too soon for a massive episode like that, especially since it doesn’t feature Ahsoka. We do get Massacre very soon, but right now the focus for Dooku/Grievous is on the main front of the war, and I’m trying to keep the first season really tight so we get to our first hint of Maul ASAP.

Ah, good point about the lack of Ahsoka. Fair enough - sounds like you’ve got it well thought-out!

Nice work everyone. Just a heads up tho, that outro is about 2 versions older than the current version! Here’s the most recent “published version, with additional tweaks still in the works c/o @EddieDean feedback: https://vimeo.com/499092432

Edit: Tweaks are mostly around duration of the credit sequence. The version above is fairly long (for credits), so figuring out where best to trim down each musical motif. That said, I quite enjoy the entire piece, but also recognize it’s not everyone’s preference. Would love to hear the groups thoughts!

regarding your new one:

  • kind of loved the beginning up till 1:47 (except the first 2-3 seconds - there i like the old version of 2 revisions back and it was overall too loud - as long as the episode is going it should be quieter) 😃 you’re leaning towards a mando end of episode thing, very nice.
  • 1:48 - 2:40, personally didn’t liked it. sorry. the old one is my fav, but all after 2:40 is just fantastic!

2:40 could be a nice point to start the credits, as I feel the outro works better with the more dramatic/bombastic music playing over the concept art rather than the walls of text (especially if going with Chase’s animated ones). It also would give a bit of “oomph” to the beginning that the old one lacked, and I find fitting that the credits begin with a literal mix of Ahsoka’s and the clones’s themes.

Author
Time

Yeah, 2:40 in that video is delightful. Bombast and hitting a good few SW themes is great (as then the music serves to tie together a little of the anthology feel), but I think our initial drop has to be soft and meditative. That piano is lovely. But then, sure, we can get hype.

Domino Squad Nitpicks:

  • I assume the intro music transition is temporary, because there’s no fade, it just suddenly cuts in at 00:24.
  • I feel like the music could linger a little longer after the end of the cold open (3:32), or have the intro music come in sooner and harder. The gap feels odd and empty to me.
  • I’m not 100% sure the cold open is necessary; I think it’d work just as well to stick it after the intro text.
  • The “Echo” insertion works well. I wouldn’t suspect it if I hadn’t read the above discussion.
  • Is the music at 8:36 added? It overwhelms the dialogue.
  • The transition at 12:00 feels like it has the opposite problem to the one at 3:32, in that there’s no gap or pause whatsoever. We very rapidly leave the scene with Hevy and 99. I’d have been tempted to stick “TWO WEEKS LATER” on a black screen and linger for a moment, maybe even with a Majora’s Mask-esque musical queue, before fading back in.
  • In general, I’m not 100% sure about the idea of keeping two attempts. Maybe it’s just because I’m familiar with the original episode, but it feels like there’s a lot of unfinished business when we’re suddenly thrown ahead to Rookies. I think it’d be clearer if they just failed once, really hard, and then got sent to the listening station, because it gives less time for the audience to invest in the idea of them succeeding at that one specific test to prove Bric wrong. Fanediting is a complicated profession, though. (It’d also get us to Anakin/Obi-Wan’s plot sooner).
  • It is odd that Clone Cadets retconned half the clones in Rookies to be part of the same squad, because in Rookies they’re introduced with more “colleagues who have only recently met” vibes. Nothing you can do to fix this though, I don’t think.
  • Rookies plays out just fine, so if you did anything major to the content of this episode, it’s seamless and nothing is missed.
  • The lighting quality leap going into ARC Troopers is noticeable, but other than that, the transition is very cleanly executed. (Clearly to solve this, you should personally recreate the entire of TCW Season 1.) Echo and Fives painting their armour in 501st colours despite not being in the 501st yet is a little strange, but I agree that cutting the scene of them joining was the right choice, so it is what it is.
  • “Feels like yesterday we were here.” and the associated reminiscence is a little odd since it’s only been two weeks. Then again, it’s kind of a joke in the original episode as well, since they were just there in the previous release-order episode.
  • I’m not sure if you’ve done much to ARC Troopers, but I didn’t notice any issues.
  • The ending, with “in the 501st”, and the new music transition, works really well. The work that’s been put in on that, with McFibb and all, is paying off for sure.

All in all, your tweaks to the overall story work well, in my opinion. I think a little tweaking to the Clone Cadets segment might be worthwhile, and obviously Echo and Fives donning 501st armour prior to actually joining the 501st is a little odd, but it’s a smart edit that I think is stronger than the original episodes are by themselves.

If I had to complain, 50 minutes feels a little long to me - but that might just be because I’ve never cared that much for endless action scenes of clones and droids blasting one another (I’m more into the Jedi and Sith stuff), whereas I know some people who can’t get enough of the clone side of TCW.

Did 99 try to get those kids shot?

Kinda echoing sade, I also see the merit of not having the cold open, and potentially having one test like you had it in that one version.

On its own I preferred the version with two tests, but after watching the whole episode, I kinda do see the merit in there just being one test. If there was one test, I think it would be interesting to keep Commander Colt’s pep talk, as well as Bravo Team’s test.

But I know you’ve already made progress on how it is now, and I think it is good the way it is! But I actually had really similar thoughts to sade, so I figured I would share them.

So, thinking about that:

  • If we want to have only one test, then it should be the first half of the first cut into the second half of the second. The first half of the first because it has the main character exposition.
  • If we have the first half of the first, we therefore have the combined test overseen by Shaak Ti rather than by Commander Colt, because she gives the exposition.
  • Commander Colt is necessary to show up to tell them they’ve failed, but I don’t think it’s particularly worth emphasising his character via the introduction/Bravo squad scene, EXCEPT if the replacement start needs a slightly punchier kick-off, which his scene gives. (Without context, he’s just an instructor or adjudicator.)
  • The Bravo squad scene would only slow us down, I think it’s only necessary if this episode itself has a three-act structure, which it no longer does.
  • Scenes that should definitely be kept if we’re going for a single test version are the second test, Bric and El-Les’ recut dialogue which emphasises failiure, and Hevy deserting.
  • But before that second test, we currently have the clones arguing about failing their first test (quite useful but not a great opening), Echo and Fives asking to change teams (useful and good but not a great opening), and Shaak Ti and Lama Su discussing clones (not vital and distracts a little from the main message of this act, but fine).
  • None of those really work as an opening scene, and I don’t think the Commander Colt scene would fit there since he’s implying they’re going to be tested right away, but cut this way they’d go to bed and stuff.
  • You could maybe start halfway into the clones arguing with themselves scene, at the part where Bric calls them down from bed and tells them they’re useless. That, I think, is the only decent start other than the first, if it follows from an intro which explains they’ve failed their final practice test.
  • Therefore I think the only viable alternative would be: Bric criticises Domino Squad for failing > Echo and Fives ask to change teams > Combination first/second test FAILED > Bric and El-Les confirm fail > Hevy attempts to desert > TWO WEEKS LATER into Rookies.

OK, that’s rendering now. I’ll let you guys know when it’s uploaded.

It’s now a very snappy six minutes, making the whole episode a tidy 46 mins.

The edit plays as follows:

  1. Bric tells Domino Squad they suck, and 99 sticks up for them (this is only half of the original bedtime scene)
  2. Fives and Echo attempt to move squads
  3. Domino Squad have their first and only test, which highlights the characters of Fives, Echo, and Hevy, and then they fail it mainly because Hevy leaves a man behind
  4. Bric and El-Les confirm the fail as 99 listens on
  5. Hevy tries to leave and is convinced not to by 99

That cuts right into TWO WEEKS LATER, where Rookies continues to highlight that trio and gives us Hevy’s death, then later ARC Troopers focuses on Echo and Fives whilst paying off Hevy’s relationship with 99. To me, this whole thing feels SUPER focused, with all of the scenes flowing together really nicely, and for that reason I really like this cut, so unless anyone really objects I think this’ll become the master.

As always guys, this improvement is hugely because of your feedback, so please always keep it coming. If you’ve had a thought but haven’t seen it shared, please don’t be shy, jump in and say it. And even if you’re just agreeing with someone else, that “+1” will always be heard because often it takes a little volume for me to get a sense of where you’re all at. So please continue to share your criticisms, thoughts, ideas, and suggestions.

Note that I haven’t made any other fixes to the episode, though I have noted everything previously discussed. If you guys confirm that this is your preferred version, once I have McFibb’s final intro and outro credits music I’ll patch up the whole thing.

Onwards now to Nightsisters, which should be a quick one as I’ve said. I had a busy couple of weeks recently but I can absolutely smash it in the evenings and all day at the weekend until this coming Sunday. I should settle nicely into a good two-week cycle now where I get loads done every other week.

I’m glad you feel like your newest one is working well! I felt bad for my initial suggestions going one direction, then once I saw the full episode, going in a totally different direction.

Nah man it’s totally fine! I think I agreed anyway - in isolation it felt right to have two tests, but given the following context it feels better as one. I’m looking forward to you guys getting a taste of s01e05 OPTION 2, because I think getting through Clone Cadets even faster gives the whole arc a real sense of coherence, and will help that focus throughout the show, which I feel is going to be valuable.

That’s the updated version with the smaller start, it’s in the spreadsheet under the new ALT LINK column, highlighted in yellow.

It seems there is some kind of problem with your google drive, specifically with this episode. If i click the alt link from the spreadsheet, it says „access denied“ at the google drive website

EDIT: fixed
