Freddy and Jason...and Ash?
At this rate, Godzilla and Gamera may be getting sniffs from development execs.

Days after the pairing of rival screen monsters in Alien vs. Predator topped the weekend box office, E! has confirmed filmmaker Sam Raimi is in talks with New Line Cinema about loaning the studio the zombie slayer from his Evil Dead movies to costar in a three-way, big-screen bout, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash.

New Line has been looking for a way to sequelize its 2003 hit Freddy vs. Jason since even before the movie grossed $114.3 million worldwide.

A franchise-melding flick on its own, Freddy vs. Jason teamed psycho Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street series with hockey-masked madman Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise.

Last August, Creature-Corner.com reported that New Line was considering Evil Dead's Ash for the lineup of a Freddy vs. Jason 2 project.

In March, Freddy vs. Jason director Ronny Yu told the Website he was interested in corralling the three iconic horror characters.

"I would definitely do it," Yu said on Creature-Corner.com. "They're still working on the script. I haven't seen anything yet. I hope they won't work on it for 10 years."

Though Raimi is best known as a director, he would not call the shots on Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash, Tuesday's Hollywood Reporter said.

The filmmaker, now graduated to the box-office big leagues thanks to the Spider-Man movies, owns the rights to the Evil Dead characters, having cranked out the original 1979 movie independent of the studio system on a barely there budget of about $350,000.

B-movie legend Bruce Campbell (news) played zombie-besieged Ash Williams in Evil Dead and its two sequels, 1987's Evil Dead 2--Dead by Dawn and 1992's Army of Darkness. The Reporter said Campbell, now 46, would be back in battle if the Freddy vs. et al. deal gets done.

Though it never worked for Ben Affleck (news) and Jennifer Lopez (news), costarring projects seem to work wonders for the careers of long-in-the-fangs genre characters.

Prior to Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy's series bottomed out with 1994's Wes Craven's New Nightmare ($18.1 million at the U.S. box office); Jason's hit a new low with 2002's Jason X ($13.1 million).

Alien and Predator are also benefiting by sharing screen time. AVP scared up $38.3 million in its first three days in theaters. As a solo space bad seed, Alien grossed a disappointing $42.2 million for the entire run of 1997's Alien Resurrection. Predator managed just $30.7 million for 1990's Predator 2.

Other characters in need of box-office boosts who might consider checking their egos at the door: Child's Play's Chucky, Halloween's Michael Myers, the shark from Jaws and Kevin Costner (news).

Sadly, I enjoyed both Wes Craven's New Nightmare and Jason X. Call me a freak.

Sam Raimi... how could you do this to me?

With Sam Raimi at the helm I can honestly say I'm not too worried. Even Ronny Yu did a very good job with Freddy vs. Jason, considering what a mediocre movie it was.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Read above... he's not at the helm. That's why I'm scared. I don't want to ruin my memories of Ash. He's one of my favorite movie characters ever.

Hmmm... maybe I should read the entire article... lol

Yu seems to be a pretty competent director though. I have faith in him.

I don't think this one will get that far off the ground. Once the craze dies down, the studio will come to there collective senses.

I pray that's all it takes, Sean. I pray.

I know that AVP made US$38M in its first weekend. What kind of second-week dropoff do you think is necessary to end the "versus" craze? Or do we need the Wayans' to come out with SMvNATM (Scary Movie vs. Not Another Teen Movie)?

Funny thing is that when they quote old box office $ sums, they never seem to take inflation into consideration...
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

Inflation wouldn't affect the grosses of New Nightmare, Jason X or Alien Resurrection much. The only one that would gain anything from an inflation adjustment is Predator 2.

I think if the 2nd week dropoff is greater than $20 million, Fox might realise they made a boo-boo.

According to some blogs I just found, rumors are that Raimi gets something out of all this...if it happens.

He will be given the opportunity (and a budget) to make Evil Dead 4.

In theory sequels make very good business sense.

Established characters/situations, reusable sets/props, brand recognition in the marketplace allowing for merchandising tie-ins and product placement, built-in audience demand to see 'the same thing again but different' or 'the continuing adventures of', less risk of the unknown quantity and they often require less initial outlay.

However, most sequels suck because they are just pumped out for a quick return with no thought put into the final product.

Intelligent sequels are few and far between and that's why the list of good sequels is small, almost always the same and grows ever so slowly.

The list generally goes: The Godfather II, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, The Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, Aliens, Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Blade II and now Spider-Man 2 and Riddick

These sequels are considered better than the originals because they take the characters from the originals and develop them further by putting them in different and more interesting situations, increasing what's at stake and making the audience realise why the characters were so popular in the first place that their further adventures warranted a sequel.

I add Riddick to that list as it is a brave sequel that decides to switch genres from it's predecessor, that and I really like it.

When bad sequels are profitable you have only the audience to blame if more get made.

You hit the proverbial nail on the head, RM. I concur on Riddick, but I would also add Babe: Pig in the City and X2. Both films move further into the previously existing universe and develop characters in new directions. Babe: PitC is also a much darker film than its predecessor, and all the better for it.

I have not seen either Babe: Pig In The City or X2 as yet but both films seem to have been given rave reviews from various people I have spoken to so I may have to check them out.

Side note: When the original Babe was shooting here in Sydney my ex and I had the distinguished honour of sitting behind James Cromwell, Mr Zefram Cochrane himself, in the Academy Twin Cinema when I was seeing some film. Actually he sat in front of me and he is not a short man, then he realised that he was blocking our view and he moved over a few seats to the left. Nice guy, I forget what the film was, it was a comedy and he laughed. *true story* heh.

That's what I really like about Sydney, we don't care who you are or how famous, just so long as you don't block our view at the movies.

EDIT: On the subject of Versus films, the new Toho Godzilla film, from the director of VERSUS, will (reportedly) have a battle that takes place here in Sydney between the Toho Godzilla and the Sony Tristar 'Notzilla'. I can't wait.

I hope they don't put Ash in another movie ever.

I love the Trilogy but I don't want wreck these movies. I don't want to be a film snob but I like these movies more when no one knew about them. Now there are Evil Dead Lunchboxes for gods sake.
