The narrative fixes/rearrangements really help the characters and help the plot feel less like New Hope V2

Good to hear. That’s really the main fix of this TFA edit since I don’t think are any major Legends breaking decisions that I need to alter like I will in TLJ and TRoS.

Just added it and the Vader lightsaber effect works really well in the vision. Thanks for the suggestion!

I really hope you can fix Luke’s arc in the next one because I disagree with it on almost every level. Rey just need to be depowered a bit in the first one to make her needing training feel more important and Kylo needed to feel intimidating throughout. Both of these you accomplished!

Cut the mention of a garbage chute

I love how you remove this, it avoids the plot hole in The Last Jedi of Phasma somehow being there after being thrown into a trash compactor on a planet that promptly exploded after.

Removed Finn saying, “Come get it!” and then charging at Kylo.

The point of that line is to show that Finn is no longer running away from the First Order, he is now willing to stand up to them.

The problem with that line to me is Finn trying to sound tough and in this he gets wiped, so it would feel almost comical.

I’ll make a thread on my TLJ cut sometime this week and begin that process, but my plan for Luke is to reframe the reason he wants the Jedi to end. It’s not because he has become a failure, but because he has seen that the strict Jedi doctrine isn’t the right way to view the force and it keeps leading to fallen Jedi. Dooku, Vader, Kylo… All products of the failings of the Jedi religion. Luke will no longer have cut himself off from the force or have gone to Ach-To to die. Instead, he went to study the first Jedi temple and original texts (like Han says in TFA) to learn exactly what went wrong. As a result, Luke will be more powerful than you have ever seen him on screen 😉

Oops, changelist should’ve said cut mention of the “trash compactor”, just fixed that in OP. I left the initial line about the garbage chute just so we know why Phasma is no longer in the film. There’s actually a comic that shows how she escapes in time.

Removed Finn saying, “Come get it!” and then charging at Kylo.

I think that’s a valid point, Testing. However, after further consideration I do agree with Jimmy that it doesn’t help his character, especially since I re-cut the fight to have Finn get destroyed even harder. I think this is really the one time in the film where we should actually see Finn showing more fear. So now it’s more of a blind rage charge since Kylo hurt Rey. Also, I made Kylo appear much stronger in my edit so I like the other characters being more afraid of him.

No one should have to go outside of a film and rely on stuff such as comics, sequels, etc. in order for it to make sense.

Oh, I 100% agree. It’s a terrible movie storytelling decision. I just don’t have any other solution. Either the audience knows that Phasma got tossed down a chute or she randomly disappears while in their custody.

The Luke arc sounds very promising. I can’t wait for the thread/change list for it!

This seems to be the best edit by far I’ve heard for this film. Can’t wait to see it. I’ll wait for a link for the next iteration however.

I appreciate the kind words. I hope it lives up to your expectations when I cut a final draft. Shouldn’t be too long as I’ve already made the initial fixes, just waiting on a couple more people to watch and send feedback to catch the rest of the mistakes.

Watched your edit! Blimey thats much better. I agree that TFA for all its mimicry of ANH is easily the best of the ST. By trimming down the “ridiculous” humour and leaving the more dry, sarcastic moments it’s much easier to take the characters seriously. Kylo and Finn are especially helped in this way in the edit.

Best part is your version of the “Rey meets Luke” vision. This looks Gorgeous really properly ethereal, and Luke being all unfocused against the slightly mystical backdrop is fantastic. By having Rey reach out to Luke in this manner it also makes alot more sense why your Luke will not be as reticent or stubborn in TLJ nor needs any big introduction between the two. We see the vision scene and then its much easier to assume that Luke thinks things through a bit more by the time she gets there and they already have a solid rapport.

Great to hear. If you didn’t see any other bugs outside of the list posted in OP I think it might be ready for a full release then? Really glad it helped your viewing experience.

I wish I could take credit for that, but as the changelist says it was made by the talented NeverarGreat. I included it because I agree that it does lend credence to the fact the Luke is still present in the force and begins a connection between him and Rey. I’m looking forward to showing you my TLJ version of Luke! I am nearing completion on the draft and will hopefully upload it tomorrow.

I’ve been able to fix enough of the initial bugs that I think were significant enough to warrant releasing a v2 of the Workprint. It is uploading now. You can PM me and I can send it to you later today.

I finally seen your edit. Great job! You managed to make to movie less an ANH remake and I especially like to work you have done with Rey, making her not the unrealistically overpowered character of the original cut.
I still have problem with the film per se; I can’t stand the idea of the First Order being an Empire ripoff and the laking of a brand new worldbuilding. But this is one of the core problems of the sequel trilogy and you have done a good job, given the poor source material. Bravo!

I appreciate the review, and I’m glad you enjoyed! I wish there was more I could do for the world building and such, as that was George Lucas’s biggest complaint about TFA as well, but alas there is only so much I’m able to touch up. The goal was to make something that could fit as a legends storyline somewhere after the old books, and I hope it lived up to the task.

Watched the movie, here’s my thoughts:

Love the restructured opening, it feels so much less formulaic that way. Showing us Jakku before its peace is disturbed by the FO was a great choice.

In general your edits were seamless and only added to the enjoyment of the film. TFA was already the best of the ST, but you elevated it by helping it not feel like a ANH rehash. I appreciate what you did to imply that the reason Han left was tied to Ben’s fall, and not him just being a jerk.

The visions throughout were great and helps the ST establish their own storytelling format distinct from the ones the PT and OT use.

I have really only 2 thoughts for things to improve on:

From Hux “if the droid is on Jakku we’ll find it” to Rey eating, I think the wipe needs a softer gradient edge, possibly to be at an angle so it feels more Star Wars. It just looked weird.

I would suggest not having the weapon fire on the New Republic at all. The destruction of the NR has no bearing on the next two films at all. In the next movie the Resistance says they’re not getting help from their allies, which could be seen simply as a continuation of the NR refusing to help. And then in the third film when the fleet shows up, it can be said by somebody that the Republic finally came through.

Aside from the fact the movies never explore the implications of the destruction of the galactic government, the plot point is one of those that serves to undo the OT, and just doesn’t need to happen.

My Edits:
Revenge of the Sith: Refocused Available

The Clone Wars Refocused: The Chosen One (Mortis Episode)

I haven’t seen the edit yet, but i agree with Delpheas about the destruction of the New Republic, and how it leads to nothing. It’s better cut.

Thanks. I was inspired by fan creations of the alternate openings of TFA with Luke’s floating hand or the Star Destroyer being pulled down and I thought a more serene sequence worked better than the rush of theatrical.

I was torn between wanting to make the ST feel super different and also making it want to fit into the saga as a whole. I tried to blend a little bit of both so I’m glad that worked for you.

You’re right, I do need to feather that wipe!

I do think the scene of the system being destroyed isn’t very powerful or necessary, though it’s more in there for the sequences around it. The way the whole final battle is cut is like a Death Star run gone wrong. Han dies, the NR is destroyed, and Finn is gravely wounded. If I do change this, how would you recommend recutting Starkiller so that Rey and Kylo are still separated? Right now it is the weapon firing that causes the planet to explode.
