TPM is not a bad movie. The expectations were too high. Too many read the thrawn trilogy, and got all excited about all the clone wars stuff. TPM is a setup for later events; the introductory chapter, part of a larger movie. Why does everyone continually judge it against other things? It's like when you watch a movie, and don't like a few parts of it.

I've never read the Thrawn trilogy. I was born in 1988, and therefore didn't get to experience the theatrical Star Wars films. But when I saw it in 1999, in fourth grade, when I was ten, I was struck with the fact that it was just a bad movie. Big effects, big title, BAD movie. That opinion still hasn't changed.

And one more thing: the acting. People have said "It's Star Wars, the acting is never good." Yes, but there's a difference. The OT had bad acting, but the PT had WOODEN acting. Sure, Mark Hamill's preformance may have been cheesy, but at least he didn't act like he had a big wooden pole stuck up his ass.

Expectations weren't too high. The trailers were just too good. TPM's lightsaber fight is the only thing in that film that I'd put a genuine star wars stamp on. The rest is.... is star trek disguised as star wars. Excluding the only star trek I really like, the original of course.

edit: You know, It's really hard to see Star Wars as Art anymore when your wearing it on your ass or brushing your teeth with it... that's just my view. It's a bonafide cultural phenomenon. That ought to count for something, imo.

I liked the phantom menace novelization better than the movie.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

I am sure there will be a Special Edition of the Prequels

talking of the Special Features i found this amusing on the commentry.

"they had to go back and film Obi Wan picking up Anakins lightsabre after their duel- he later gives it to Luke in Episode IV- because “we kind of forgot about that”

Text

Also Lucas said he didn’t realize why people were cheering anytime Tantive IV appeared on the screen. I don’t know if it was McCallum who pointed it out to him, but come on George? It is the little things that make Star Wars great, and sometimes Lucas just totally misses the great things to tie the trilogies and instead puts in Jango Fett & Anakin building C-3PO! It baffles me sometimes that this is the same guy who made the original Star Wars.

Years ago I used to take part in discussions when everyone hated the prequels and given the passage of time, I can see why critisim was justified.
You could easily argue that the Lucas who directed ANH and Wrote, Produced TESB and ROTJ was a different person to the one that did the Prequels as so much life changing events occured to him.
I still attribute the success of the originals to him but were it not for the grace of god in having others to help him out, particularly in the editing to ANH, then it would simply have not been successful. But he did what all great leaders do, he directed people and made something truly collaborative.
