So, R2 is totes the one who saved Grogu at the Jedi Temple, right?

Grogu will be conveniently saved from Anakin the same way he has to be conveniently saved from Kylo in 10 years.

Guarantee there’s some handwringing at Lucasarts of how they have to reconcile Kylo’s school-shooting with Grogu carrying the franchise.

If they’re brave and want to do bold writing, they’ll make the sequels a form of inevitable fate that current Luke has to work to prevent, perhaps via Jedi vision. Make it so the tv series’ tension is how the heroes will prevent the bad future from happening. Save the timeline, Luke!

…but it’s more like they’ll just weakly say “Um…Grogu happened to be away from the temple that day when Kylo snapped. Also Luke forgot about him when he hid on his island.”

Yeah but Grogu isn’t going to be at Jedi School long or there’s no future for this series right?

Author

Perhaps couple of years down the line it will become a running joke of Grogu always dodging the bullet every time the Jedi are exterminated in the Star Wars galaxy.

Can’t wait for when Grogu survives the fall of Rey’s Jedi Order.

“For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi”
Yoda was nine hundred years old when he said this, Grogu is still a child at age fifty which means he’s likely to grow exponentially in the next 50 years. I’m betting we’ll be seeing a very different Grogu next season, if there is any sort of time jump.

Well, all of the tv series are in a weird place, writing-wise, since everyone but Rey will be dead in 10-20 years. It kind of neuters any narrative tension to know it ends with “and then Kylo kills everyone.”

They really have to think hard if they want to keep the sequels as the inevitable future.

They’re not going to retcon the Sequel Trilogy. Like how the previous generation had to come to terms with the prequels being forever a part of Star Wars, the current generation will have to come to terms with the sequels. There’s hope for them to be slowly improved and augmented with ancillary material - what you could consider a slow retconning, maybe - as the prequels were, and of course this very forum works tirelessly producing fanedits to highlight their strengths while trimming the flaws, so it’s not all doom and gloom. In fact, we already have a comic clarifying that Kylo sort of blew up the Temple by accident, and certainly made no particular effort to thoroughly exterminate his fellow students.

Speaking of ancillary material that helped redeem a once-much-hated trilogy of films: TCW was, from the beginning, doomed to end with Anakin (one of the main heroes of the show, no less) killing everyone. In fact, we knew the fate of essentially every character besides Ahsoka - the films had already depicted the deaths of Obi-Wan, Anakin/Vader, Padme, Yoda, Mace Windu, Palpatine (well…), the entire Jedi Order… And yet still Clone Wars managed to be one of the best pieces of Star Wars content and is widely loved. Telling compelling stories in the gaps is a time-honoured Star Wars tradition.

Has The Mandalorian Succumbed to the Dark Side?

Very interesting and some very valid points. Maybe goes a bit off track and overboard in the second half of the analysis though.

Some of that may be valid (not that I agree), but to me the good in the series far far outweighs the shrinkage. I dropped out after what looked like the halfway point. Dude starts to drone on while trying to prove his bona fides as a fan. It becomes repetitive and somewhat anti-Disney.

I absolutely think The Mandalorian is doing that, in the same way The Clone Wars did with the prequels. We’re seeing the New Republic through its soldiers, which should make its destruction in The Force Awakens more compelling, and it’s clear that the core worlds are being complacent about Imperial remnants, so we’re seeing how the First Order begins. We never saw Luke’s painstaking efforts to create a new Jedi Order onscreen, but now we are, and it should make his self-exile more powerful - we get the sense he’s worked for years to build this, only for it to come crashing down upon him because of his own mistake, and fear. We even saw force healing in The Mandalorian around the time it appeared in The Rise of Skywalker, and I feel better about the new ability because baby yoda does it!

There’s no chance in hell that LFL are going to retcon the sequel trilogy - they’re connecting it.

Yes and no–when Disney took over Lucasarts, they erased all of the prequel era ancillary material. And in fact they very obviously pushed the sequels to ignore all of the prequel-introduced concepts (Darth Plagueis where are you) and soft-reset the entire series.

I wouldn’t be so 100% convinced no big erasures will never happen again.

Also, cheap “redeeming” retcons of villains is just distasteful and weak writing. I recall some story that attempted to retcon Anakin’s youngling killing into “actually, he just drew his lightsaber and then ordered the clones to shoot them.” Kylo “accidentally” blowing up the school reeks of the same attempt to make bad guys into good toys. May as well make Book of Boba have a cameo by Han Solo where they become friends because Boba was ACTUALLY trying to protect Han from Vader and also deliberately missed when trying to kill Luke.

What are you talking about? They erased almost all ancillary material, period. The Clone Wars was one of the only things they left in. And a lot of other famous prequel material like CW03 and Republic Commando had already been decanonized in favor of The Clone Wars.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Christmas?

Wookieepedia says: The Holiday Special aired in the United States on November 17, 1978. Not really Christmas!

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Spoilers for the Rise of Kylo Ren, but the

retcon that he blew up the temple by accident is essentially just done so that his first Jedi kill can be built up to as a big moment - in the final issue we absolutely do see him outright murder one of his previous friends.

Considering how much it’s always irritated me that Anakin goes from cutting off Mace’s hand to slaughtering children in about half an hour, I was glad to see Kylo’s fall given a little more time to breathe.

And yeah, the old EU was primarily retired to make room for the sequels, not to get rid of prequel-era material. The prequels actually did pretty well out of it: because TCW was the only non-film material to remain canon, this means that a lot of the new EU - Rebels, Mando, Jedi Fallen Order, the comics, Vader Immortal, the new Thrawn books and so on - actually wound up leaning quite heavily on TCW and consequently tying-in nicely to the prequels in a way that a lot of the old EU didn’t (especially stuff like the original Thrawn trilogy that predated the prequels). TCW itself had actually disrupted a lot of the old EU’s prequel-era material when it was originally airing, because George cared little for the EU beyond the cool designs he could take from it to use in his own stories (like Aayla and Quinlan).

Yes? The context of what I was saying was the erasure of the prequel era EU since we were talking about the prequel era material slowly retconning things for the better. And then they are slowly picking and choosing what parts to recanonize, i.e. Ahsoka.

You may have misunderstood what I said since I wasn’t saying anything about any other material (OT, etc) that was also erased since it wasn’t relevant contextually.

The modern interpretation of Life Day is that it’s a Christmas analog but given its airdate, it’s a better fit for the American Thanksgiving.

Adding to the evidence is that Christmas was officially recognized as a holiday in that galaxy, far, far away as can be seen here.
