What's your favourite movie(s) and why?

There’ve been top 10 list threads for films in the past, but they’ve been inactive for ages now, and I thought I’d introduce a thread to make things more flexible. I think I’d struggle to make a definitive top 10 list.

I’ll start: 2001: A Space Odyssey is my favourite film. I have a DVD of 2001 which I’ve never used; it demands to be seen in a cinema, and any time there’s been a special screening, I’ve been first in the queue. It has breathtaking scope, deep and far-reaching themes, wonderful visuals and an incredible vision of the future as well as the universe itself. It seems to encompass so much about humanity. It was probably also one of the things that made me an atheist.

Other favourites include Star Wars (of course - there’d be other SW films on my list, but for the sake of variety I’ll just let this movie represent the whole saga), Donnie Darko, The Truman Show, Blade Runner, Heat, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, Cleo from 5 to 7, Lady Bird, and Your Name.

I love hearing what people see in their favourite movies. Fire away.

Do you mean what are your favorite movies right now, or in past tense. Because i grew up with a ton of films i absolutely adored, but i haven’t seen them in a long time. Favorite doesn’t equal best made, or technologically the most impressive. In fact most are probably based on a memory or nostalgia. Like Return of the Jedi for instance it was the first Star Wars i watched it theaters and i fell in love with the film. Early filmgoing experiences like that, Gremlins, Ghostbusters left indelible impressions on me. Going to see A View to a Kill, License to Kill, Star Trek VI, Indiana Jones Last Crusade, Ghostbusters II, Back to the Future II etc. So mostly stuff tied to a memory of going to the films with my dad, or when i started taking my younger brother to the movies or what i watched in high school. Were i to list everything the list would be long.

I like escapist cinema, cinema of the fantastic and science fiction.I like action movies. I like Westerns swashbucklers, Comedies, Japanese cinema. I like film noir and the classics. The only genre i like very little of is horror but i like a few. I used to study film and the way films were made and i was absolutely obsessed with movies.

I wonder what my list would be now ten or fifteen years ago i would have said Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson was my favorite, before that it was the Star Wars trilogy, before that it was Steven Spielberg films. Before that it was Sean Connery 007 films, or the Star Trek movies.

A few years back it was Kurosawa films and Studio Ghibli movies. Or Sergio Leone Westerns. Long long ago, it was Errol Flynn Swashbucklers, Flash Gordon serials, Douglas Fairbanks movies. Bruce Lee movies, Godzilla movies, King Kong. The films of John Carpenter, Robert Zemeckis, James Cameron, Francis Coppola. Ridley Scott.

Musa the warrior extended (Korean)
War of the Arrows extended (Korean)
Snowpiercer (French & Korean)
Strange Days (American)
Conan the Barbarian John Milius (American)
An american werewolf in Londin (American)
Apocalypse now (American)
Star Wars (Brittish)
Lord of the Rings (New Zealand)
Dune David Lynch (American)

Yeah sort of a top ten kind of…

Hope you like the list but don’t forget Rollerball and the likes of capricorn one too 😃

I got so many films I don’t need to subscribe to anything but there are many many more I could list but a very difficult to choose top 10 would also include more than ten because you can’t leave out Jaws and Bladerunner or Alien either,or for that matter Aliens or Terninator.Coming to think of it Die Hard and Predator should also be on the list and well you get the drift there are quite a few exceptional films and I could also list many more such as Gladiator, Shindlers List, Saving Pruvate Ryan,Titanic, King Kong, E.T, Close encounters of a third kind, Raiders of the lost Ark, Hellraiser… I could go on and on but there are stand out films and ones that do not have it.

To do a top 10 after around 100 years of cinema is not fair really don’t ya think?

Wow I never even touched on Tarantino or Scorsesee films or even Dennis Villenvue or Guillermo del Torro, Jon Carpenter, Michael Mann or Mel Gibson or perhaps even dances with wolves and Mad max.

There is to many good entertaing fulms let’s treat them right.

Mirror/Зеркало - Andrei Tarkovsky

This film is by far one of the greatest, if not the greatest film of all time. It transcends on a metaphysical and spiritual level like no other film. It tells the story of dying man reflecting on his memories of his mother, absent father, childhood, Russia, and more. I can’t quite convey in words why it’s my favourite. It’s truly an amazing film though that deserves to be experienced.

Criterion appears to be releasing it next year on physical release. Long overdue but grateful it’s finally coming.

I had present tense favourite movies in mind, but I created this forum so people could share whatever they wanted.

Same here! In this thread we welcome rambling on about whatever you like most. I certainly do it quite a lot.

The Seventh Seal

I originally watched this film around 2009/2010, a couple years after experiencing a crisis of faith which had left me deep in the throes of agnosticism. Suffice to say, as an agnostic who still retained a yearning for the Christian faith but needed certainty to believe, I saw myself reflected in Antonius Block.

I’m no longer in the place I was then; I’ve since become an agnostic Whiteheadian Discordian Christian omnist (yes, I still identity as “agnostic”, but as an adjective rather than a noun). Yet I still love this film, and all of Bergman’s films pertaining to the “silence of God”.

Ridley Scott, Alien, Blade Runner.

Scorsese Taxi Driver

Kurosawa Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Seven Samuari, Ikiru.

Miyazaki Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke.

Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Fellowship of the Ring theatrical is the best version.

My favorite Star Trek by far is Star trek the motion picture. Though i also like the Wrath of Khan and The Search for Spock, and the undiscovered country.

Favorite James Bond is From Russia with Love.

I also only really like the first film in a bunch of series like back to the future, Robocop, Terminator, Ghostbusters and Alien, the Predator, Die hard.

Favorite Superman is Reeve and favorite Donner film is Superman 1978. Favorite Marvel films most likely Thor, Captain America, Winter Soldier, Civil War, Iron Man. Favorite Spider-man is the second one by Raimi. Favorite X-men is Logan or, Days of Future Past or First Class. I used to like X2 but it hasn’t aged all that well imho. Favorite Batman films are 1989 and Returns, though i also like the dark knight. Favorite Disney Star Wars is Rise of Skywalker. Favorite JJ Star Trek is the one he didn’t direct Star Trek Beyond. Favorite Star Wars prequel is tough but i would say Phantom Menace. Favorite MI films are Rogue Nation and fallout.

Whenever i’m in the mood to watch Timothy Dalton i will also watch Living Daylights, Rocketeer and Flash Gordon.

Going from Tarkovsky to The Phantom Menace in a favourite films list is not something I ever thought I’d see! (Only joking of course. Great choices!)

Haha, thank you! He and George are my favourite filmmakers. I love how they’re both similar yet different from each other. Both told stories that have strong poetic links, relied heavily on visual expression, and most of all were strong believers in their vision being accurately portrayed and rarely compromised.

I’d really like to know what George makes of Andrei’s films. I’ve thought about asking J.W. Rinzler if he knows since we’re friends on Facebook but I’ve not had the chance as the timing feels off with him going through cancer at the moment.

My top two favourite films from both masters and in general are Mirror and The Phantom Menace. I could make strong arguments for either one.

I’m adding ‘Rome, Open city’ to my list, because it’s in turns funny and tragic, made on a shoestring budget and is one of the best anti-fascist films I’ve ever seen; also ‘Wings of Desire’ because of its great cinematography, homage to 1920s German cinema and how it conveys how much cinema is about empathy.

2019 was a great year for movies. I love Parasite because of its visual perfection and the way it visually conveys inequality, The Irishman for chronicling the life of a man, instead of giving the usual snapshot (I think this is an amazing achievement) and Little Women for literally being perfect.

I also think Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best sci-fi films ever made. I can’t help going into spoilers: the story of Joe, discovering humanity and giving his life meaning through a selfless act, is incredibly powerful. The visuals, music, and acting are all stellar. I love how Ryan Gosling can convey so much emotion while basically keeping the same expression for the entire film, he’s incredible.

My top 3 is the original Star Wars, followed by V for Vendetta, followed by Interstellar. Love all three almost equally, but SW has a slight advantage. It is my favorite movie, hands down.

I just got it with my Christmas gift card (and Barry Lyndon). I’m really looking forward to watching it as I’ve wanted to see it for a long, long time. You really convinced me though!
