Star Wars - A New Score (* on hiatus *)

Thanks Alex. I’ve been listening to the planet’s suite on loop trying to decide which tracks should be themes for which characters and actions.

I’d heard a little of “The Planets” before, but listening now the impact on Star Wars is immediately apparent. I’m gonna play the whole piece while I’m working. Feels immediately familiar; I’d watch a fan edit with this as an experiment.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Hi Hal thanks for your input and thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into your edits. I’m looking forward to watching Ascendant soon.

I already know that Mars will be the Empire’s theme but there are six other movements in the suite. I wish to assign each to a character or a theme. The trouble is there are some lovely ethereal peices that have potential to work well for a variety of characters so a little bit of experimenting is required.

My plan for this project at the moment is to cherry pick a a few scenes to test various combinations of character and music.

Another factor I need to consider is which rendition of the various movements I should use. There are different opinions on the matter. https://www.classical-music.com/features/recordings/best-recordings-holsts-planets/

Potentially (almost certainly) I’ll end up using multiple versions of the same movement but since this suite is over 100 years old there are a lot of different interpretations out there.

I will be using Possessed’s edit of A New Hope as the base for this rescore.

Which recording will you be using? This recording by The Georgian Festival Orchestra under the direction of Jahni Mardjani is my favorite. It feels like space in the way that they recorded it and I like the difference in strings and horns that are used vs other recordings. https://open.spotify.com/album/6oeZou8AqtGgPyLBcCo0eI
TMBTM used some Holts Planets pieces in the War of the Stars edits. Fantastic music!

Hi Digmod, thanks for joining the conversation and thank you for sharing the link. That version is soo good, in fact, in fairly sure it was the first version I heard, certainly it’s the same version my dad has on CD. These days I’m rather fond of this version:

It’s a more recent recording of Owain Arwel Hugh and the Royal Philharmonic orchestra. I find the crispness of the brass really to my liking, their version of Jupiter is probably my favourite.

I’m probably going to have to use a few different recordings to be fair. At the moment I’m watching A New Hope in Disney+ with this playing in the background.

Re: TMBTM’s edit I’ll PM them over on FE.org and pick their brains. I was thinking of talking to mredthefed too as I assume they’ll know a thing or two about rescoring a Star Wars film.

Yeah, that recording was one of those early days of cd’s recordings.
TMBTM is hard to find these days. If you are needing the edits themselves just let me know and I can help you out.

Thanks DigMod, it was more to get tips on how they removed or reduced the score but I might take you up on that.

Having spoken to Possessed his edit is not presented in 5.1 with discrete channels. It is surrounded encoded, but it’s matrixed 2.0 surround like pro logic or dolby surround. So while it will upmix very well for a surround experience there will be a little bit of bleeding between the channels. Which wouldn’t matter for viewing but it might make editing a bit difficult. I’ll know more once I’ve processed the .iso file.

I’m going to shelve this for a while and focus on my other Star Wars projects.
