Final Fantasy 7: AC

Some of you might know this, but the fully CGI Final Fantasy 7 movie was leaked a few days ago. It was on several torrent sites. It was in Japanese, but some guy a few hours later released a .ssa file with english subs. It was officially released in theaters over in Japan today.

Anyway. I was wondering how many FF7 fans are here, and if any of you have seen the movie yet. I'm a major fan of FF7. It's one of my top 5 favorite RPGs. But this movie was so awful. The story really made no sense at all. I mean, the bad guys just came out of know where. They had no real reason to be there... It was just a lot of running around and fighting for no actual reason. And the Geostigma desease was really random. I mean, where did it come from? And what was it doing to them? The whole thing just wasn't put together well... I wonder if the writer actually PLAYED any of FF7.

Story aside though, the CGI was amazing. Easily some of the best CGI I've ever seen in a movie. The music was pretty good aswell. And the fight scenes, even though there was no reason to really have any of them, were still pretty cool to watch.

As a movie though, it was awful. Especially as an FF7 movie, because it didn't have anything to do with FF7! It felt like the whole point of the movie was "isn't it cool seeing your favorite characters in cgi movie form?!"

So... Did any of you guys see it or plan on seeing it?

Yeah, i thought it was pretty good, though my memory was a bit hazy from not playing the original FFVII game. The one thing that did jump to me was the fact that the last battle reminded me of Matrix Revolutions. The Smith and Neo fight was ripped for the return of the one winged angel and Cloud. I dont know if you caught on with this. Aside from that, it wasnt a bad movie, way beter than Spirits Within.

so far, i have not been impressed with final fantasy movies. i was really hoping they'd get it right after the first one, but i was wrong. it should have been kept a game.

Well, they've only made two movies so far counting FF7:AC... Unless you're counting the anime series, which was also awful. But it wasn't a movie. Anyway, I like FF7:AC more than Final Fantasy Spirits Within (which had nothing to do with any of the games), even though they were both terrible. At least AC had better action and better CGI (granted, it's like 5 years later since Spirits Within was released...)

But yeah, there really hasn't been an actual good FF game released yet. Well, really, there hasn't been a good video game movie released yet. Doom looks like it could be cool though. Well, really the only thing that looks cool is that first person camera view they're going to be doing. That sounds/looks like an awesome idea... I hope it's pulled off right,

Yes. Obey, or feel the wrath of Emperor Jay!

On topic: I've never even seen what the fuss over FF 7 was anyway. Sure, it was good for it's time, I guess, but Final Fantasy 10 is SO much better when it comes to gameplay and story coherence.

i know we will get grilled fro it, but i agree, i played both FF7 and FF10 and FF10 was better, it flowed more like a movie, and the game wasnt so long, to this day i still havent beaten FF7 i have gotten as far as the 3rd disk, then loss interest, the game is solong and the graphics are just annoying i find, i would rather have 2d graphics then those ones.

I was going to post a long reply about why FF10 is pure garbage, but I decided I'd rather not get into a debate or anything...

Yes, by all means, Jaster.

For the record, I think Shimraa's statement hit it right on the head. I would much prefer good 2D graphics over Final Fantasy 7's terrible "3D" graphics any day. The system at the time just coulnd't handle what square wanted to do on it. A sprite game would have been SO much better.

That said, I didn't think the game sucked, just that it's not the holy grail of RPGs like it is made out to be.

from the preview screens on the PS3 for ff7 i hope the do the remake. Final Fantasy 7 had the best story of all the games, and is my second favorite to snes final fantasy III (VI in japan). I like FInal Fantasy VIII third, final fantasy IX fourth, and final fantasy X fifth, final fantasy 2 snes (IV in japan) sixth, and final fantasy 1 seventh. I've seen the trailer for the movie and just wish it was an interactive game. Theres other final fantasies that deserve sequels, and i don't mean like X-2 which was girly j-pop crap and the u.s. did'nt get the updated version where you could actually play as the male chracters. Out of all the final fantasy games VI and VII deserve a story continuation, but final fantasy VIII and IX would be great too. VI-X are the best games in the series, and VII was when it bacame an interactive game/ movie. Can't wait for XII since it should really be called final fantasy tactics III. The games have great chracterization and i've always wished their was a series of novels, as a lot of these games sit comfortably in the same universe as tolkien's lord of the rings. In fact role playing games could be considered to be a by product of the tolkien phenomenon, since according to tom shippey he was single handedly responsible for crating the fantasy genre and the roleplaying was a byproduct or a dual birth. Some of squaresoft/square-enix games fit nicely into the science fiction catagory. Final fantasy 7 is set in a dystopian apocalyptic future where the earth itself cries out over shinraa corporation's destruction of the planet. Final Fantasy seven is the one game in the series with an overt message, we are destroying are planet with pollution and playing god by playing around with nuclear weapons and the human genome. Then there is Secret of Mana another favorite fantasy game of mine, chrono trigger the time travel sci fi/ fantasy crossover, chrono cross. Theres just too many too list. they are they best cgi studio out there next to lucasarts/lucasfilms , and the popularity of final fantasy in japan could be compared to that of star wars in the u.s. . Of course they are the top rpg game company, but there are others. There's gamearts who created the LUNAR SILVER STAR STORY AND ETERNAL BLUE, which I happen to own the translations by working designs co. Have not seen the movie but are the bad guys clones of sephiroth, like brothers or sons or something. or are they taken from jenova like sephiroth was. They have to make a chrono trigger 3.

by the way spirits within is a way underated movie and it fits the ff universe nicely. The same people did a short for the animatrix and of course advent children. THose who have'nt seen animatrix should it is one hell of a great anime vignette series, i actually like it better than the movies. and for accuracy sake playstation originally evolved out of the canceled cd add on for the snes, and that not being released was why square left nintendo to do final fantasy 7. the original game engine used on the unreleased demo sequel to the u.s. final fantasy III which was to be for the nintendo 64 was reused for quest 64 one of the worst games ever. They retooled the game engine for final fantasy 7. The unreleased game demo for the cancelled u.s. final fantasy III part 2 or for the japanese final fantasy VI-2 is hard to find now. It used to be available for download on the net as a game for emulation, i've even seen cartridge's of it go for huge amounts on ebay. This was actually the first sequel ever to a final fantasy game, though never fully realized i've even seen screenshots of the chraracter locke and the esper girl.

Well, I disagree that FF7 has the best story, really. Granted, I haven't played any of them but 7, 10, and Tactics Advanced...

But Final Fantasy Seven's story seems to boil down to "Sephiroth descovers he is the son of a genetically engineered freakshow from a long-dead race, goes crazy, and tries to destroy the world--which will somehow give him immortality (WTF?). Cloud must stop him."

Sure, theres a bunch of nuances and subplots involving Shinraa Corp and the Tuxedo Dudes... But the basic plot really doesn't make much sense. It could have been just badly localized.

yeah but you have to give the game mad props for creating the playstation movie game, and the console movue game in general. Plus it was the first game made for millions of dollars and was a huge risk and undertaking and took more than three years to make, plus it put the sales of sony playstation in the u.s. through the roof people who had followed nintendo for years left them because square went to playstation and i was one of them. It made sony a sucess story and costs nintendo millions of dollars in revenue. They were not able to draw the fans back until the release of zelda 64, and the sucess of the gamecube. Besides at the time nintendo had the kiddie status and did'nt release mature games. as good as their games are i've moved on to playstation, playstation 2 and xbox. I can only take so much of the kiddie games constantly being rehashed, how many times can they reuse the same games and just retool the gameplay. Like a million zelda, mario, metroid games with the same story, zero continuity. And they were dumb enough to sell rareware to microsoft which also got perfect dark in the deal for the xbox. You know the software developer behind goldeneye 64 and donkey kong country for the snes. Sure i like zelda ocarina of time, and wind waker, and probalbly will like twilight princess and the new mario coming out for nintendo revelolution. But where was the promised Metroid 64 or mario 64 2 ?, or the cancelled starfox which was first for the snes. The new metroid games for the cube are cool but i still think super metroid for the snes if better. Next to the first playstation, the only other older system i still play games on is the snes. Zelda a link to the past, super metroid, super mario world, and final fantasy III, chrono trigger and the super star wars game trilogy. Although the nintendo 64 is still o.k. for mario 64, ocarina of time, shadows of the empire, rogue squadron and goldeneye, and starfox 64. Oh yeah and the only movie like games before final fantasy VII were flashback and out of this world, both for the computer and snes. The only thing i wish they would do with the final fantasy games is have multiple endings based on the choices you make in the game, similar to kotor, fable or wing commander III and IV. this concept evolved out of the choose your own universe books, they were going to do it with movies to involve the viewer but it never caught on. I peronally always thought it would be cool to have a game where in empire strikes back you can choose to join vader and overthrow the emperor, or in return of the jedi kill both vader and the emperor and rule the galaxy.

skyjedi2005, could you try to break your posts up into paragraphs? It's just kind of annoying when it's all in one giant block of text like that...

Anyway! FF10 had nice graphics, but really that was all it had going for it. I just couldn't get into the whole Sphere system. It was pretty boring in my opinion. I didn't really like the storyline either, just because I found it boring. Overall I just thought FF10 was a very boring game to play... I'm just a big fan of the original RPG style. FF10 introduced so many new elements that most RPGs didn't have before the PS2, and I just didn't really care for many of them. It was kind of the same problem I had with FF8... They tried doing this whole new way of learning magic and new skills, and it was just overly complicated and annoying. I guess in all reality, the biggest problems I had with 10 and 8 were just the battle systems. I couldn't really get into either of 'em.

The first RPG I ever played was FF7, so maybe that's why it's still on my top 5 list. But I just really enjoy playing it. A good RPG (or any kind of game for that matter) has never been about storyline or graphics for me. It's how much fun I get out of actually playing the game. Most people find things like random battles to be annoying, but I really enjoy them and will spend hours leveling up even when I don't need to!

The simple things, like learning new skills or finding hidden items or trying to figure out the best way to save money and still get all the good items... Things like that are what I really find fun in an RPG. I know it sounds kind of dumb, but no other video game beats the feeling I get whenever I start a new game of FF9... Just thinking about different ways of playing through it and remembering where all the secrets... It's kind of hard to explain. And FF9 is an example of how an RPG can have a terrible storyline, and still be fun.

FF7 I think easily had the best battle/magic system. The materia system was really well designed. Of course, FF5 also had an awesome battle system, using the Job system... I'd like to see them bring that back some day.

Anyway. To be quite honest, I've never fully understood the FF7 story... I've played through it 3 times now, and each time I figure out a little more than I did the time before, but I still don't have it all down. It's definitely a little confusing. And granted, the graphics are pretty horrible. Even back when the game was released, the graphics were pretty awful compared to some things being released. Of course, that wont happen now days since Square-Enix always pumps out the top of the line in graphics.

Oh yeah, another thing that bugged me about FF10 was the dialouge. It just seemed really awkward in some places... I didn't like the voice acting. I don't really like voice acting in any RPGs though. In ToS I turned the voice acting off at the very start of the game, just because I found it so annoying.

Anyway. When it boils down to it, I just prefer the more conventional systems. Usually when they try making a new one, I just don't feel comfortable with it. FF10 wasn't really pure garbage, I just didn't like it's design as much. I am still looking forward to FF11 though. But I'm actually anticipating the release of Kingdom Hearts 2 more than FF11.

Also, skyjedi2005, I too would love to see them remake FF7 for the PS3. But I'm a little worried that they might get a little carried away and end up adding in all kinds of new things and changing stuff that doesn't need to be changed!

-The voice acting in FFX is pretty crappy. It seems like they handed the actors their lines one at a time inside fortune cookies.

-The sphere system is pretty complicated to explain, but in practice it's not really that difficult. Maybe you should give it another chance.

-One thing I really didn't like about FF7 is the battle system that let enemies attack while you were busy "resting." I prefer the turn system of FF10, though I could see how certain things about that might be annoying if you were used to FF7. I just think the battle system (not necisarily the leveling-up system) in FFX was great because of all the strategy and having to pay attention to whose turn it was next for the next 5-7 turns to decide you course of action. (Especially in the fight against Evrea! I have a weakness for *good* turn based strategy.)

-Because it bears repeating, Final Fantasy seven's graphics suck. Also, I prefer even the crappy VA of FFX to no VA at all.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released only a year later and it's graphics didn't suck.

Honestly, Square should have gone with sprite graphics in the overworld, still had the FMVs and Three-D battle arena, but none of those horrid pre-rendered backgrounds or blocky characer models. It would have made the game *MUCH* smaller in file size, and much easier on the eyes.

yeah its really funny cause i have played FF7 FF8 FF10 and X-2 of them all i liked the FF10 battle system the most followed but FF7 and FF8. X-2 was just a wait of time, it was easily the worst game i have ever played, story wise, battle systemwise, and even the graphics, we saw all that in FFX they didnt improve on anything so even in that sense it got a bad rating from me. My only problem with FF7 story line was that it was too long and complex, if u want to play a prefect game the first run through, as i often like to do, the game takes forever, FF10 had a solid story line with minimal side tracks as you go on, and if there was a size track it wouldnt take too long to finish it, and finding stuff wasnt so hard, i can remember countless times when i was playin FF7 and i would just strait up not be able to find the town i was looking for, or the sit i needed to find, just cause it was hidden, it wastes so much time and is jsut useless. that and the 3D graphics were the 2 things that detracted from the game. Your right though the game had real messages and talked about the issues, FFX did that aswell when they talked about sin and the use of technology and so on, it was very key in the way people look at things in the world today.

Hm. A lot of people on the net dis FFX2, but I didn't think it was really that bad. Sometimes the mission objectives were vague.

Of course, I never really got that far because the dang game froze up my PS2 like an hour after I had last saved. ANd it was a rental.
