Just Seen The Disney Plus 4:3. It Looks Good. I Prefer It To The FXX And Disney 16:9 In Every Way. It’s Not Overdone. Is There Any Word On This Project As I’d Say We’re All Very Eager To See The Finished Product. Could You Even Post A Clip Of An Episode Just To Give Us A Hint. Thanks

Yeah it pretty much stalled. I’ve had a brief look at the new remasters. They look good but they haven’t done an amazing job on the line shifting issue. Which is no surprise. I’ll take a closer look.

Just wondering how far you along you are on this, thanks👍

Ive had a glance at this and I don’t think its going to work for me. It has all the probems of the original remaster bar the aspect ratio. The colors are too bright and too oversaturated. There are still Interlacing artefacts and line smearing artefacts. The video filtering is too overdone. And far too over processed for my taste. Particularly when it comes to fuzzy details become strongly defined details. Stuff that looks bad because of the low resolution of SD now looks bad because someone drew it bad.

My simpsons remaster will still happen, at some point, when the workflow becomes defined enough to do it all at once. But don’t expect it any time in the near future.

For now enjoy disney plus.

Here’s the original Tourette’s Scene from “Marge Gets a Job” from an original Fox airing;

I’ve already done a preservation myself using the PAL “Risky Business” DVD but it’s here for anyone who wants to see or use an original version.

Saw an interesting discussion about ATLA that may or may not be useful for this project:

"In my opinion, I feel like the a lot of the early episodes could benefit from being downscaled, and then reupscaled again. These blurays are pretty much what the DVDs should have looked like. If only they could have given it a true remaster.

I was actually tinkering with this show and ESRGAN earlier today. Much more demanding than waifu2x of course, but my goodness, the results after downscaling, dehaloing, and upscaling again were pretty impressive. Here’s a frame I had tried this on."

Oh wow, if this is the upscaled 4:3 versions coming to Disney ill be pretty happy. Its still from the original TX masters. And in that shot of the waffle machine you can see traces of the line smearing, as well as a jaggy frame that Im aiming to eliminate.

Did you ever finish the script?
I found S1-12 NTSC Full DVDs and have both Waifu2x and Topaz setup for upscaling but want to feed it the cleanest possible signal.

You’re better off training an ESRGAN model to upscale rather than an off-the-shelf solution like Topaz or Waifu-2x. Those can be good but a specifically trained model would be many times better.

Here’s some examples of my attempts to upscale the first two seasons of Metalocalypse. These are from series 3 or 4 as I was using the DVD as the low-res input and the Blu-ray as the hi-res input. Pretty amazing results if I do say so myself.

Would still love to see this project come to fruition!

I’m currently in the process of re-ripping all my DVDs because I found out the versions I ripped years ago I forgot to encode the surround audio. The benefit is that Handbrake has better settings now so I can make better quality rips.

That said, I still don’t really know what to tick beyond the obvious pre-sets. If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them!

My current solution is to take the Fast480p30 preset, make sure to encode at “same as source” frame rate, and turn on “animation” tuning. But if there’s any other suggestions I would appreciate the advice.

Use MakeMKV, and keep the raw MPEG-2 files

Personally, I’d love to see just a frame of the restoration. It would be a good way to give people an idea of what it’ll look like, without doing an ENTIRE clip.

I know this is a Simpsons thread, but as asked, here’s a before and after of fixing a frame.
Do note that the method I’m using is ESRGAN (Machine Learning) and is a Work in Progress.
This same method would theoretically work on the Simpsons.

After (full res):

Bloody hell thats impressive, I had been thinking of using ML to detect the frames, but if they can do that good a job of fixing them i might have to give that a go. Im very keen to hear your process

Hi, I thought I had found you on Discord that day I posted that. I guess not? However, do you have a Discord so we could discuss?
