So, any chance of seeing the alternative version without the crawl or with a classic SW logo (and no EP number) maybe? 😇😇😇

Absolutely.
However, I’m gonna wait until I’ve finalised my season 2 plan because there are probably some changes to be made to episode 1.

Sounds interesting.
What are you gonna change? 😉

Nothing major. I’ll probably put back in the child eating the frog-creature on Nevarro and being referred to as a carnivore because his appetite seems like a running gag.
I may have to remove the space battle and use it in episode 2.
I’m still considering trying to edit the Grief Karga transmission so that it takes place on Sorgen, rather than in space - depends on whether my roto skills are up to it!

Thank you so much for making this, Smudger. I was able to find and download your fanedit…I am totally BTFO, you are a truly talented editor who needs to be on Disney’s payroll.

My only complaint is that I didn’t like the 20th century fox logo replaced with the Star Wars heads…also when that fades out, you can catch a couple of frames of “STAR WARS” written horizontally before it switches to the Lucasfilm logo.

For my own personal copy of this movie, I redid the logo by putting the 20th century fox back in like a classic Star Wars movie. I found this version of it on Youtube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE5VdQ0zAQs ), but then I used another Lucasfilm Ltd. logo without the “A Disney Company” underneath because it’s redundant to see it a second time. The music sounded a little off to me, so I used the audio from the 2005 ROTS version of the fanfare. I sliced off the THX part and substituted it with the fanedit.org disclaimer at the beginning.

I have a lower quality version of the file hosted online so anyone who wants to see it can check it out:

https://mega.nz/file/3i4i0aTC#kOsh3gCggV2ObrqgpFYjcI0MfIgJRllSURSsAWxklZ4

Thanks Darth. I’m like you and love the Fox logo. I used it in all my Clone Wars edits. I just felt this was the time to move away from it, especially as we now have a new Star Wars logo sequence.

I’d also, still, recommend adding the Darksaber back in. You can cut it in prior to Din leaving the planet, make it more immediately after Gideon crashes. It’s going to be such a big plot element, as it’s such an Excalibur or Akenstone type political allegiance tool for Mandalore, and that’s what Bo-Katan is searching for in s2. It’s too big of a Mandalorian culture moment, and works as a better reveal that he’s still alive rather than the Darktrooper scene.

I actually think the Dark Trooper reveal scene works better because we discover that Gideon is alive at the same time that Mando does. The one issue that The Tragedy has thrown up is the actual Darksaber reveal. It needs to be a big moment and showing it to Grogu doesn’t cut it… so I cut it 😃

It needs a reveal prior to Bo-Katan though, that’s why I feel it needs to be restored here. If you wait until after, it will need more gravitas than it’ll get, similar to how revealing it to Grogu wasn’t a big reveal. The only way we get a bigger reveal is if Bo-Katan shows back up and she sees it and explains what it is. While that may happen, that’s becoming the end of your third film with it being a minor mcguffin in your second film, when it could just be a tease/reveal he’s alive in the first, which would set up those other stories.

I don’t think it needs a pre Bo Katan reveal. Yes she mentions it, but that can either act as a precursor to a full reveal, or it can be cut.

I just know it’ll be a big enough deal when it comes up. It’s Bo-Katan’s entire motivation, because of the political power, specific to Mandalorians and the planet Mandalore, it will bestow. I feel like cutting it out is undercutting that plot line, which will only become more important as this goes on.

Time will tell. At the moment I don’t think it’s significant enough to add that scene into episode 1 and derail the ending.

My main thoughts about episode 1 currently are whether I need to replace the Sorgen episode with the Tatooine one! 😦

I like the previous idea of putting Carl Weather’s message earlier, not right after the Sorgen.

About ep I, i think it can stay as it is in general 💪🏽. (Of course I ll wait for the version without the crawl 😇, though I’m sorry cause I know how time consuming and difficult it must be to pull it off 😉)

Thanks for the amazing job! Can I have the link to the first movie (2.5 hours, latest edit)?

Thanks a lot. It was amazing!! I wish there was an italian version, or a subbed one, but it’s totally fine since I have already watched it on Disney+ and know what dialogues are about.

I’ve just watched the edit recently, really excellent work on this one. It captures the feeling of a classic star wars film (with the crawl and opening planetary descent, added wipe transitions) despite the episodic nature of the source material. The core plot is preserved well, with many of the story beats landing better here without the extra material (like IG-11 speeding in to save the day on Nevarro).

I did occasionally miss having a few shots from the show, however; like the gag with Grogu eating the frog, Djarin entering the Mudhorn cave (though I see its exclusion has already been discussed), the rest of the training montage from Chapter 4, and the IG reprogramming montage. At times the action felt a little too constant, and I wonder if cutting too many quiet moments like these is the cause.

Other thoughts:
- Great use of the Chapter 5 opening dogfight
- I wonder if the Armourer fight (from Chapter 8) could have been cut?
- Great cut on Chapter 4, so it appears Djarin would have let her remove his helmet
- Great cut on having the client shot immediately
- I feel the shot of Kuiil’s death is too short
- Having the Karga transmission moved to Sorgen would be a great addition, as others have said, but I don’t envy the VFX work of that task

An excellent edit, and I look forward to what you come up with for season 2. From the chapters out so far it seems like it would benefit from your approach as well.

Watched this last night and really enjoyed it - great job! The transitions, the music - I even loved having the crawl in there. Looking forward to episode 2!

Watched the edit recently. I think that Smudger has done an excellent job. It was a lot of fun to see the creative choices you made to make the story work and stay within your time limit constraints. I think all of my minor critiques have already been mentioned, so I won’t rehash anything. Just wanted to offer my sincere thanks for the time and effort you put into this edit. It’s a great gift for fans that are looking for an alternate, but still quite satisfying way to watch this story. I am eagerly waiting for episode 2.

After completing Season 2 yesterday, I thought the show had a good amount of material to create a continuity after ROTJ. I watch the Skywalker saga only through hand picked fan edits to create my own “playlist”. May I request a link for your HD .mov edit? I’d love to check it out. Thank you.

Smudger9, thanks again for sharing your edit with the fans. I just finished watching your cut, and overall, I enjoyed it a lot. I felt like I was watching a classic Star Wars ride with a story that flowed very well. You did a great job adding in the opening crawl, creating seamless transitions between scenes/episodes, and narrowing the film down to a core storyline by making conscious decisions on what scenes to keep and what scenes to cut. In the first act, it took me a moment to understand where you were going with the earlier scenes because I was expecting to see specific moments/events that were actually cut. At first, it felt like there was something missing in Mando’s character build but your choice of progression quickly clicked with me once I made the connection between the opening crawl and Mando turning in his bounty. As someone else had already mentioned, the action does seem to feel a bit too constant at times. Though, here I try to imagine the life of a galactic Bounty Hunter that isn’t necessarily all beaches and cocktails. Mando ‘constantly’ has to stay on his feet with little to no rest. Especially now with Grogu in his possession. It’s a dangerous life for a hunter and I think it’s well portrayed in your edit.
There are some minor editor nitpicks I have:

  • The 20th Century Fox logo or the reimagined Walt Disney style Fox logo versus Disney’s Star Wars “faces”. The Mandalorian manages to make Star Wars “cool“ again and to be reminded of Kylo Ren isn’t something I look forward to. I may not be speaking for all but the Mandalorian replaces the Sequel Trilogy in my mind.
  • The ‘Star Wars The Mandalorian logo’ looks really, really cool but I was expecting the traditional Star Wars logo with a Mandalorian subtitle before the crawl (e.g. “The Mandalorian/Episode I/A Vergence in the Force”). I feel like this would’ve kept the fan edit consistent with any other Star Wars fan edit that has worked to remove these reimagined Disney logos and openings without the crawl. The classic Star Wars logo would hit it a little more home. It’s a Star Wars film but the subtitle would reveal what type of Star Wars film it is.
  • I don’t think the final scene should be a hidden scene à la Marvel. I think it should take place after Mando takes down Moff Gideon’s Tie and before preparing his ship to leave Nevarro.

As mentioned, you’ve done an outstanding job with this cut. Your edit will work as a continuation of selected fan edits to compile the best Star Wars saga possible. I am now highly anticipating episode 2. However you decide to patch the story, please do not cut Ahsoka (or Boba Fett). The Jedi episode was one of the best. Here we are shown to believe that Mando has finally found a Jedi that can help him but that of course turns out to not be the case. In other words, we are set to believe that Mando is close to completing his quest but there is more to it than what Mando is able to believe. He doesn’t understand the nature between the Light and the Dark side. Ahsoka attempts to explain this. Mando has to understand that he can’t just drop off Grogu with any force wielder. Ahsoka helps Mando (and the viewer) learn more about Grogu. Additionally, we don’t get to see many Jedis in action (unless we go back to the Prequels era). I don’t think Ahsoka would ruin or diminish the reveal in the final episode of season 2 (I initially thought it was Ahsoka boarding Moff’s cruiser until I saw the black glove and the green lightsaber light up). Ahsoka did not detract from the final reveal in my experience. I think it added to it, heightening the excitement because again, we don’t get to see a lot of Jedis in action these days.

That is all for the feedback I have. Thanks again for allowing me to view your edit.

Thanks for the review.

For the logo, I wanted to move away from Fox because their association with Star Wars is now a distant memory, but keep the fanfare. The Star Wars faces worked better than the Disney Castle! You could always pretend that Kylo Ren is a Legends Sith from KOTOR.

I will be touching up Episode 1 once I have finalised my Episode 2 ideas. That version will have a STAR WARS crawl logo release, as will Episode 2.

The end Gideon scene has been much debated. I tried many ways of including it, but none of them worked for me, and ultimately I wanted a stand-alone film much in the vein of the original Star Wars. That scene just screamed to me… look what’s coming in season 2!

Just watched the cut and it was amazing. This worked so well as a film. There’s was very little that I could point out. My two main areas I would focus on is I don’t think the time between leaving Cara and meeting her again was long enough. Also removing Tatooine cuts out fennec which could be a problem next episode due to how much she’s in it. Beyond that I think you did an incredible job. Thank you for sending me a link.
