Info Wanted: For an Original Trilogy Preservation at my College

(Edited)

Recently i’ve transfered colleges and now am part of a university with a truly wonderous media library (4500 dvd, 600 LD - They literally craploads of Criterion LDs)
Anyhow, i’ve set myself on a mission to see if I can’t persuade the head librarian of the place to offer the original trilogy alongside the george lucas special editions. As they have the Definitive Collection on LD, i’ve figured my best bet is to offer the TR47 version to them as I can point out that they already have the LDs; so why not have them on DVD?

However, as i’m a new student here i’m trying to first do them a favor before I broach the subject of the Trilogy with them. They have quite a few DVD players that haven’t been made reigon-free yet, so I thought that if I could find some codes for them i’d easliy get my foot in the door.

Unfortunetly, i’ve had no luck finding any codes for the models that they have, so I thought I might ask if anyone here might be able to help in any way…

The models i’m looking for are:

Pioneer DV-270
Sanyo DV-260 (s)
GE DGE 100N
GE 1101P

Any help would be awesome.

A bit of an update..

I've since scoured the intarweb & came up with only 2 cracks that looked iffy, but I went ahead and ran with them. Dropping them off I mentioned that i'd be interested in donating a copy of the original Star Wars trilogy to the library for their collection. I got a very positive response, but a little apprehension at the legality of it. I explained that there really should be no problems with such for three reasons: #1 - Since they already own the Definitive Collection on Laserdisc, having a backup copy on DVD wouldn't be illegal. & #2 - They are not going to be selling these for profit. & #3 - Since Lucas has no plans to release the originals commercially, these 'archival' editions then are pretty much public domain by default.

Anyway, the guy said I could fill out a donation form and bring them by & he would personally make the case for them in front of the head librarian himself.

I'm providing them all the info off of the Cowclops thread (this is version 1.1) for their records, but hopefully in a about a week i'll be able to post a link to their library that shows them as listed in the catalogue.

My only question that i'm wondering about is how they will type it up, here is how they currently have the LDs:

Edition: Widescreen collector's ed.
Imprint: [Beverly Hills, Calif.] : FoxVideo, 1993, c1988.
Descript: 9 videodiscs (ca. 390 min.) : sd., col. ; 12 in. + 1 guide ([12] p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm.)
Note: Videodisc release of the 3 Star Wars motion pictures, released in 1977, 1980 and 1983.
Closed captioned for the hearing impaired.
In container. Accompanied by book: George Lucas: the creative impulse / by Charles Champlin. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1992.
Catalog. # 0693-84.
Star Wars: producer, Gary Kurtz ; director/writer, George Lucas ; music, John Williams. The Empire Strikes Back: producer, Gary Kurtz ; director, Irvin Kershner ; screenplay, Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan ; story, George Lucas ; music, John Williams. Return of the Jedi: producer, Howard Kazanjian ; director, Richard Marquand ; screenplay, Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas ; story, George Lucas ; music, John Williams.

Reissue of the 3 Star Wars films, science fiction tales of derring-do, heroism and romance. Set in the future, they relate the adventures of Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo as they battle the forces of the evil Imperial army.
Rated PG.

Should I put something like TR47/OriginalTrilogy.com release under the Imprint section? They are going to need to know this from me & I just thought i'd ask what everyone else thinks...

Why you don't you donate the Editdroid set? It is the all around best set when you count all of the special features + picture quality and work that was put into the set IMO. Donate the Editdroid set with the Cowclops 1.1 Definitive Bonus disk and you've got the best set possible for the situation. Either way, it sounds like a great thing that you're doing.

Well the Cowclops one is the exact transfer from the LDs they already own...besides that though, I don't own the EditDroid ones.

Aren't these DVD transfers themselves region-free, and playable on most every DVD player? It's not like they're Region 2 and need a region-free player to play them. (Unless they really were burned with a specified region)
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

He doesn't want the region codes to make the DVD players compatible with the SW DVDs. He wants the codes so he can make the library think he's doing them a favor by unlocking the players for any other DVDs they may have that cannot play on them.

JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

They must have a nice arts budget to be filling a library with unplayable import DVD's. Sounds like they can probably afford a couple multi-region players.

Yeah one would think that...especially since they have about 4,500 DVDs in their collection.

Alright, i've offically submitted them for review; the guy I helped out with the favor is going to be making the case to the head media librarian himself, so I suppose Monday i'll have an offical update with whether or not it got in..

Well, it's Monday and the verdict is:

Not Approved.

The guy that made the case to the head librarian said that she said it was way to illegal for the library.
I call bullshit on her, but whatever.

So much for being nice there anymore.

having a copy of a movie at a library is a pretty touchy subject. even if it is a small technicality, they can't take a chance with it, otherwise they have a grand possibility of losing grants and funding. just keep your copy for yourself and for whomever you'd pay it forward to.

count yourself lucky you have access to all those LDs. if you felt like, you could help the rest of us preserve some rare LDs to dvd.

Unfortunately though I have no access to any sort of LD-to-DVD equipment, else I most surely would be..

find the DVD trilogy in the library, and just swap the discs for the original trilogy when you take them back! :-)

umm, its not bullshit...it is illegal even if they have a copy of the laser discs. now if the library goes and takes their copy and makes a dvd backup of that, then its a legal copy.

ive said this in another thread, as was told to me by a friend who works in the LoC archiving LP's. for it to be a backup and legal, it needs to be a backup of your copy, not a backup of someone elses copy. even if they are the exact same disc.

Like they couldn't say that it was their copy...seriously, who the hell could tell the difference if there are no menus?
I'd go and do a transfer of it myself of theirs if I had te equip/know-how....
