In the time, even before EP 1 was released, my thoughts went to a line from EP4.

"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

I speculated that Lucas would prove that.
How?
Palpatine and (now) Vader destroy Naboo with the Force, in the worst way possible. In addition to removing the planet, they remove the knowledge of the planet as well. They wipe the memory of Naboo from the minds of all people except them.
Vader doesn't know Padme is on Naboo when it happens though.

Now, that way, you could have put Jar Jar on the planet as well, and then he's better than dead...
