DJPitaB, your (solid) way of dealing with any dupe frames in video… Real quick so as not to de-rail this thread (I don’t have a way to do your wanted capture 😦) what is your method for that if you don’t mind sharing the info? Thanks.

Honestly, it’s a very manual process. Just for some background: I have a very good eye for missing & duplicate frames, so it irks me quite a bit when I see them. Because of that, I have a compulsion to fix these things whenever I can. It started with some music videos, then I did it with full episodes of TV shows, and eventually, full seasons of TV shows. It’s incredibly time-consuming, but oddly fulfilling when it’s complete.

If I have a source with duplicate frames (say 30 fps when it should be 24), I’ll slow the video to 24 fps so that every frame will show in the editing timeline. I then advance one-frame-at-a-time through the video and delete every duplicate. In the end, I should have a video that plays in 24p at the correct speed.

That process becomes more complicated, however, when something has been screen-grabbed, because in those instances, you’ll typically get both dropped frames and duplicate frames. When that happens, what I try to do is several passes of screen recordings (3 is usually enough) so that any frames that were missed by the first 1 or 2 passes will hopefully be caught by one of the recordings eventually.

I’ll do the same thing I mentioned earlier, deleting duplicate frames, but also noting any dropped frames and pulling them in from other screen grabs. I’m very meticulous, so it ends up working well; it just takes forever.

DJPitaB, yeah, I’ve done similar. When wanting to average/median five or so VHS captures of the same thing I’d have five or however many VirtualDub instances open, would comb through…

I guess I was hoping you had some magic software to share, but wishful thinking. Thanks for the reply.

LightWave = fun times with gfx for me 😃

Sure thing. I wish I knew about said magic software, but my repeated searching for such a thing leads me to believe it doesn’t (yet) exist. If anyone here can tell me different, I’m all ears!

Not sure if you’ve tried it, but tfm and tdecimate in avisynth do a good job. I recently used them for a 30fps progressive video that should have been 24fps (yes, I mean those exact numbers not 29.997 and 23.976).
Standard or adaptive IVTC didn’t work but tfm and tdecimate restored it to 24fps and to my eyes looks faultless.

Might be worth trying if you haven’t already.
If you would like the exact settings I used for tfm let me know - I might still have them!

If it is of interest to anyone I have a 1080p 5.1 8GB version with the song reinserted into the film. It looks really good! Just DM me if interested in the link.

For anyone who’s curious, I can verify that the version JMOD5454 has looks fantastic. It’s the best HD capture I’ve seen, plus it includes subtitles, 5.1 surround audio, and chapter markers. It’s obvious that great care was taken in its creation.

For me, the only thing that could make it better would be some minor stabilization to the added scene, which has been an issue for me no matter where I’ve watched the scene (iTunes Extras, MoviesAnywhere, Amazon, Disney+, etc.). It suffers from a jittery/jumpy picture due to the way the scene was initially captured from the original source material.

If anyone is interested, I have created a version that addresses that issue using some image stabilization software and some manual frame-by-frame tweaking. There is little to no image cropping, so in my opinion, the stabilized version looks better overall, but feel free to judge for yourself. (PM me for a link.)

With both cuts please! ^_^

With this announcement, Disney will have to do a 4K UHD release. Perfect 30th anniversary timing. 😉

Seems to me there will be a 4K Blu ray release, but it’s prolly now coming for Xmas 2021 as it’s a little too late now to do so. Can’t wait…

A version including the song is now available on Disney+ - go to Extras to see the option to view the extended version. Sadly it doesn’t have the full version of Marley and Marley still.

Does that full Marley and Marley song add anything or was it fluff?

I believe it added a third and final verse leading up to “You will be haunted by three spirits!”

What I mean is did it add anything really?

I don’t think so, no, which would probably explain why “When Love Is Gone” was restored for the initial home video release but that third verse wasn’t.

That’s what I thought from what I read about it was padding in other words cut for a reason.

Just curious: I know Disney+ has recently removed a lot of their content…

For now (Since December 9, 2022), there is a way to watch the full version of Muppet Christmas Carol WITH When Love Is Gone if you go to the “extras” section for that movie, but has anyone been able to get a proper capture of that version for historical purposes? Seeing as no blu-ray or UHD disc has been produced with this version of the film, this is probably the closest we’ll ever get to an official release, and it would be a real shame if it suddenly disappeared.
