DVD lock up question

Author
Time
So far this has happened on two DVDs, the first being The Pianist and the second Disc 1 of the new Superman II torrent. On both of my DVD players there are certain parts of the films that become very pixelated and lock up the player, very annoying. On both my computers however, they play fine. Do you think my players need to be cleaned or something? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks guys!

FIRST, MAKE SURE THAT THERE AREN'T ANY SCRATCHES WHICH I'M SURE YOU'VE DONE, BUT CHECK AGAIN ANYWAY. SECOND, IF THERE ARE NO SCRATCHES TRY CLEANING THE LENSE ON YOUR PLAYER. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE USING A DVD LENSE CLEANER AND NOT A CD LENSE CLEANER. IF THAT DOESN'T WORK THEN IT COULD BE THE BURN ITSELF. IF YOU HAVE A DVD BURNER TRYING REBURNING THE DISC.

Yeah, I've wiped the discs and checked repeatedly for scratches and scuff marks so I don't think its that. The Pianist DVD is an actual retail DVD, so I don't think its a burning question. Again, my computer plays them fine so I'll try them in a couple more players then get a disc cleaning kit. Thanks!

You may need to get the laser in your DVD player realigned.

Hmm.... it doesn't work in my friends PS2 either. Could it have something to do with the discs not liking players? This has got me really confused...

Alright, burned Superman II again, and it works fine. I might have had some other programs running during the burn. Still doesn't fix The Pianist though.... I'm thinking I should just send it back to Amazon, but I don't know how much work is involved in sending it back and such :-/.

That is odd. When a disc doesn't work in my DVD player (burned ones, that is), I can almost always rely on them working in my PS2 because that plays all versions of burned discs. I'm still not sure what's going on with your Pianist disc though since that's a manufacturer's original copy.

I'VE RUN ACROSS COMMERCIAL DVDs THAT HAVEN'T PLAYED RIGHT BEFORE. SOMETIMES YOU GET A BAD BATCH OF DISCS. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM GETTING IT REPLACED BY THE MOVIE STUDIO. THERE SHOULD BE A TOLL-FREE NUMBER ON THE DVD PACKAGE THAT WILL GET YOU THROUGH TO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

So you're suggesting I go through the actual movie studio (in this case, Universal) rather than going through where I bought it from?

THAT IS CORRECT. 99% OF THE TIME THE MOVIE STUDIOS ARE AWARE OF ANY "PROBLEMS" WITH THEIR PRODUCT. IT'S SIMPLY CHEAPER TO REPLACE A FEW CUSTOMER'S DISCS THAN IT IS TO DO A RECALL.
What if it's a "deliberate creative decision?"
