It is very sad news that robert wise, director of the andromeda strain, the day the earth stood still and star trek the motion picture has died. another trek related death so close to james doohan's and brock peters. And i'm still reeling from the fact the i know it's old news, that Jerry Goldsmith died. Years ago the doctor from the old star trek died, what's next kirk or spock?

Oh man that sucks - and 4 days after his 91st birthday too. What is up with all the death that's going around lately?

I hadn't heard that Jerry Goldsmith had died. That's a shame.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Wise. And you too, Mr. Goldsmith.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Wow.

Who does that leave alive? Nimoy, Shatner, and "Uhura" and "Sulu".. Right?

Walter Koening, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols.

The sad news just keeps piling up lately. Roger Clemens' mother died yesterday as well; he had hoped she would be able to see him inducted into the Hall of Fame, as his father died some years ago. He made his scheduled start yesterday anyway in her honor and won. A true gamer.

Perhaps this thread should become the dead pool...

Death comes in threes...

Actually, on that Roger Clemens bit, I had a really morbid idea: since he performed really well after his mother died, what if there was a group of assassins who went around killing the family members of sports superstars at crucial moments in the season in order to fix the season results? Granted, eventually they'd run out of relatives, but it is a thought.....

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Going even further off-topic, the Clemens situation reminds me of when the mother of Formula One drivers Michael and Ralf Schumacher died the night before the 2003 San Marino Grand Prix. Michael won (until then he hadn't done better than 4th that year) and Ralf came in 4th.

Robert Wise had a career that was much more varied than many directors. He was talented and fortunate enough to make genre-defining movies in several fields, and even though he hadn't done anything in recent years his impact on the world of film was a great one. He will be missed.

a have the robert wise director's cut of star trek 1 on dvd, and it is better than the original film. one of my favorite dvd's, oh yeah and the soundtrack is awesome, my second favorite of all time next to john williams a new hope soundtrack or just "star wars". Plus his movie the day the earth stood still is a classic, Klaatu, Barada, Nikto in star wars came form this film, and of course the line in sam raimi's army of darkness.

Yeah, i know he did other movies, but his science fiction films are my favorite. Star trek:TMP, the andromeda strain, and the day the earth stood still. Of course there's west side story, which was brilliant in it's own way is you like stage plays or musicals.
