The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released) — Page 23

I don’t think so. An alternate audio track is one thing, but that’d be a whole 'nother ~50GB of stuff to deal with. And I don’t have any interest in retaining that change. However, it should be a doable exercise for anyone interested to merely overlay those couple shots to this project.

OP updated to reflect a new release of ESB that is underway.
In short, it’s remastered using OohTeeDee’s 19SE regrade and D+80 but essentially unchanged in terms of content.
I no longer use Adywan footage save for the Emperor hologram scene.

Currently uploading some of the versions while encoding others, but this’ll be appearing in the usual places soon.

ANH is next, and may have more for me to tend to than the others.

lol

To be clear: I formerly used his Wampa cave scene, which is no longer necessary with these sources. And I used his work on the Cloud City window as they meet Vader for dinner, now reverting to the OOT for that one problematic shot.

Wait! What about the part where the Special Edition screwed up their enhanced background. After Lando betrays Han and Leia to Vader, Adywan changed the background with the existing Special Edition background for consistency.

I don’t think that was ever part of this project. If you want those kind of fixes it’s best to just watch Revisited.

No! Hal did incorporate that in his edit of The Empire Strikes Back.

True, but I do agree that it’s not really part of the scope of a project in which the primary goal is to hybridize official versions. The Emperor thing is an exception (to me) because the 2004 version just looks awful.

Well, I have included it in order to resolve the error in favor of the SE since Adywan’s Revisited was based on the same primary source. This time that’s not the case and the two didn’t really work when put next to each other, so I reverted it to the OOT version of that shot.
Fortunately the Emperor scene worked perfectly well, being in a separate environment.

Okay. Is this because Adywan’s Empire Strikes Back project was 720p? On a side note, isn’t funny how YouTube doesn’t consider that resolution to be HD anymore?

No, just that the 2011 BluRay transfer and 19SE are pretty distinctly different from each other.

It could probably have been made to work, but I’m okay with having the original version of the shot since it blends together better.

Just watched bits and pieces of ROTJ V2 and ESB V4 and I gotta say, they’re gorgeous! Definitely a worthy update, if you ask me. Once ANH V3 is out I think I’ll be due for an OT rewatch 😃

How come you reverted back to the original opening logos?

When I started this, the Special Edition versions all had the prequel-era logos. So, for a Custom SE version I figured that’d feel right.
However, at least ROTJ would use the new 19SE as a source, which uses the modern LFL logo (which does not feel like it fits with the opening fanfare).

Rather than feel like the OT should try to “pick a side,” I would just rather let each trilogy have its own distinct opening flavor. No fuss and avoids awkwardness.

Just curious, but how did you manage to upscale Adywan’s 720p edit to 1080p, Hal?

Looking so forward to watching the trilogy back again once ANH is done. The Custom SE has quickly become one of my favorite ways of watching these films. Some other attempts to blend theatrical with SE changes usually have at least one thing that I personally don’t love, but every change in these edits feels perfect to me. The spirt of the original cuts remain, but with genuine improvements from the SE versions that only enhance the films and don’t take away their charm. They fall in line with the rest of the saga without feeling butchered or distorted. The original filmmaking is still there, but with enhancements that actually improve and don’t distract. You’ve done an incredible job Hal.

I’m really sadden. I know I’m not really a somebody but it’s just I suggested an idea that I spoke to you and to my surprise then, you put it in. Then with this newer update it was not carried over into this newer version. It made me happy that I got to see it come to life and that a suggestion of mine was made into consideration and put in, but I understand it’s your edit. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it and it become my ultimate favorite specialized due to the some SE changes and some original elements 99.5% of what I agree. Also along with an idea of mine in it that made it even more special. I hope I’m not coming across in the wrong way. 😦

All my life as I looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never in my mind did I know where I was, what I was doing.

Is that about the TIE engine? The problem was that it was done using 2011 footage, and that particular shot seemed to stick out compared to the surrounding footage. So I elected to forego the change. I think it was better that way than to have the whole shot feel a bit weird for a few seconds. Sorry. 😕

V3 of ANH is now available in the usual places. See OP for description. The gist is that it’s remastered using the 19SE source.

Hi, sorry to ask. Where are the usual places? I looked through the first few pages of this thread but only found a mention of a Drive, but not a link. I have not read the entire thread but thought I’d better ask.

I’m gonna send out a slight update to ESB to offer an audio track featuring Temuera Morrison voicing Boba Fett.

There will still be an audio track to select with the original voice, but I think it’d be worthwhile to have this as another option.

Will you just be using the SE audio, or have you considered alternate takes from his Battlefront voice work? I seem to remember it being discussed somewhere that he gave a better delivery for at least one of the lines elsewhere.
