He wanted to put about an hour of deleted scenes on the DVD, but neither New Line or the French company MK2 (who owns the rights to the scenes, for some reason) wanted to pay to have them restored how he wanted. I think MK2 was rumored to be doing another version sometime in the future with the scenes.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Originally coming in May (now on hold) is a dvd set of the theatrical release, the 'Alan Smithee' version, and extras of including a bunch additional deleted scenes.
Anamorphic, Dolby Digital.

If anything is begging a fan edit by jamming all 3 of the above together, yanking out all references to "Weirding Modules", and a few other touch ups (CG fix of missing blue eyes? Re-edited prologue?).

OK.

I am up for this challenge, and I am going to do it!

THE DUNE "FAN" RE-EDIT

VIDEO SOURCES:

1985 Pan & Scan MCA Laserdisc, 2002 Widescreen MCA DVD, Bootleg DVD of the Alan Smithee Version (no subtitles)

GUIDES:

7th Draft Script, http://www.duneinfo.com/unseen/ , and "Building the Perfect DUNE" by Sean Murphy (Video Watchdog No. 33 & 34)

OK, so this will not be "Perfect", and due to the sources available, this re-edit will have to be (forgive me for saying this guys) Pan & Scan. Now a re-edit may improve the flow of the extended T.V. version some and I can restore the homoerotic heart plug scene (PURE LYNCH). There are some overly used (and misplaced) effects shots that beg to be removed from the T.V. version. I will fix the "blue eyes" missing in some shots. I was thinking of Re-Pan & Scanning some scenes so they make more sense.

As for the prolog, I have no idea what to do. The T.V. prolog is way to long, and the Irulan prolog is way to confusing for people who don't know the book. I may need to do a combo of the two. There is not much to work with, but hey...

Talked yourself into it eh? I thought we were all talked out of it.

I'd at least wait to see what Lynch does, he may yet redeem the film. If nothing else we might see more footage in 16x9 and maybe some new/cleaned up effects shots.

I know Amazon does list a previously released 2 disc Theatrical/S.E. DVD as an import (probably Pan and Scan) if you're determined.

I may be wrong, but changing the Weirding Module story line may be able to be done.

With a bit of sound and film editing, all reference to the weapons being related to the Bene Gesserit Voice can be altered. They can just become Sound Weapons of some type. They did this kind of trick with Highlander 2's Directors Cut. In a way, I am glad the film did not have laser blast type weapons. By 1984 so many films and T.V. shows had jumped on the Star Wars bandwagon, and had some type laser effect weapons. LYNCH came up with something new and different. All and all, I do agree that it just did not work having the Weirding Module weapons being part of the Bene Gesserit lore.

eliminating the whole sound weapon thing entirely is going to be hard. early on there is a scene with the emperor and the guild discussing the duke's soldiers and their 'new weapon' to be fair I think lynch did okay introducing this as a way of getting round the impossibility of coming up with someone moving really fast a la the books' ie the wierding way' he had a limited budget and it would have required too much sfx work to make it happen. of course today, the computers make it easy. and in fact they did manage it as an effect in the miniseries but I don't really mind the sound modules too much.

I'm definitely going to try a fan re-edit of the DVD when it releases. That's all I'll say until I see it.

Further news from TheDigitalBits.com

Next, we've followed up with our Universal sources and have now been told that director David Lynch's participation in the Dune: Extended Edition isn't a done deal yet. It IS the reason the title was delayed, but the details about Lynch's involvement are apparently still in discussion. So we're going to suggest that our previous post is best considered Rumor Mill-worthy for the time being, until things are more official. We've amended the earlier post accordingly. I don't want to get anyone's hopes too high, but I have to tell you mine are pretty well into the stratosphere at the moment. Let's all cross our fingers on this one, because Lynch's Dune ranks right up there with Ridley Scott's Blade Runner at the top of the list of films that most deserve revisiting by their directors on DVD. We'll keep you posted.

So we wait...

But Titanic, all cgi effects aside is an awful movie, and for this movie to get a uber release is just... well... yawn...

Lynch must has geez, if that movie can get attention like that. then shoot, maybe I should revisit Dune and make sure it gets done right. Heck, I have no other obligations right... (Has he done anything since Lost Highway?" and get some of my respect and clout back.

(Just rambling, and of course this is probally so far from the truth, but its a thought.)

But thank the Kwizatz Haderach he is doing this... I was quite disapointed that this release was being postboned... and just finding out that this release was going to happen, I can wait.

Update @ digital bits : [Editor's Note - we've been told by studio sources that this isn't a done deal. It IS why the disc was delayed, but Lynch's involvement is still in discussion and no work has been started yet. So cross your fingers and let's hope it comes to fruition.]

By the way, I was also able to confirm with Universal that a Flash Gordon: Special Edition is currently in production. No specs or release information is available yet, but it's good to know that the 80s sci-fi/camp classic is finally getting the long-awaited attention it deserves on DVD. We'll post more as soon as we hear anything.

How many people here are doing/plaining on doing a fan edit? I think I've counted 3 so far.
Maybe you should all compare notes so as not to go over the same ground unnecessarily.

Also, THX, what are you using as the foundation if your Prologue?

Hi,

I am working on a re-edit of the Irulan Prologue. As she is speaking I am going to do a cross fade into the scene where
Reverend Mother Ramallo Speaks the Prophecy on Dune. I will have to use some shots of the hall of fremen and desert to extend it a bit. (I will reverse the action and cross fade so it looks a bit different then it will when re-shown later.) The original Script calls for the film to open with an extended version of the speech by Reverend Mother Ramallo, but I will have to use what is there. As for the T.V. version Prologue, I am doing a heavy re-edit of that. I'm working it in as part of Paul’s picture film book screen. I am overlaying a graphic over part of the Production Paintings to make them blend with the graphics seen on the film book shown in the current version of the film. This way it will look as if Paul is looking at a history lesson...

Hi,

Just wanted to give you all an update on "DUNE: The FanFiltration Edit". A project that I have been working on for the past 6 months.

The re-edit is DONE with all of the sound work and new effects work (Blue Eyes) completed. The latest delays have been due to a compression problem I was having (I'm still kind of new to that), and I also have decided to include a few extras. There will be the documentaries from the UK Special Edition (PAL convert to NTSC), a new photo gallery, animated menus and a text commentary that lists the changes I have made to this edit and some other info about DUNE that will run throughout the film using the DVD's subtitle option.

If any of you would like more info on "DUNE: The FanFiltration Edit", please feel free to drop me an email at: FanFiltration(at)Hotmail.com.

I'm just curious, what did you do with the additional scenes from the "Smithee" cut - did you add them in full-screen or did you cut them to make them look as if they were in proper ratio, matted? (I assume you took them from one of the official releases, and all the available DVDs with the Smithee version that I know of are in fullscreen and, unfortunately, it's not the open matted kind)

I heard that the only reason that the Dune DVD was held back was because David Lynch was going to be involved with the DVD in some sort of re edit of the movie.

I read it on "The Digital Bits" some time ago. Sorry I can't be more specific.

This special reedit of “DUNE” was prepared by us at Fanfiltration to satisfy fans whom have never been truly happy with “DUNE” in neither its truncated 1984 theatrical version, nor the version of the David Lynch film prepared specifically for television markets with extended (yet poorly edited) footage. In many places, scenes have been reedited to try and faithfully reconstruct David Lynch’s original vision of the film using the December 9, 1982 shooting script as a guide.

The film is presented in a “Pan & Scan” format; as no widescreen footage of the extended cut scenes is available at the current time of this reedit production.

For this fan–created reedit of “DUNE”, every attempt has been made to enhance grainy cutting–room–floor scenes that had been haphazardly inserted into the “Allen Smithee” television version. Fanfiltration’s computer–generated effects have been added to correct the missing “blue within blue eyes” that had been left unfinished in the Smithee version. We also applied color correction to make the clips match. These clips have been incorporated to allude to the dimension of the characters and plotlines in Frank Herbert’s “DUNE”.

i think the most basic difference between these two cases may be that lynch has never really considered dune to be his film. it has his mark on it, but it belongs to dino & raffaella de laurentiis, who hired him to do a job with the promise of funding & final cut on blue velvet.

Here is some excerpts from my text commentery:

The extended prologue has been left out of this version by choice. Lynch never intended it to be included. The producers of the extended television version cobbled it together to explain the plot elements to an audience that would be viewing the television version over a two–night period. We felt that the prologue should not be included. Many fans regard the extended prologue as somewhat sloppy, and slows down the pace of the film. Fans of the extended prologue can find the footage as an Easter Egg, someplace within this DVD set.

Some fans may ask, “Why is Princess Irulan the narrator of the theatrical version?” She is the narrator, because Paul must take Irulan as his wife in order to satisfy political traditions of the Emperor. With this fate, Paul’s story is also Irulan’s. Unfortunately without this final revelation of plotline, Irulan’s presence as a supporting character or narrator is puzzling. Maybe one day, this still–missing scene will make its way into the bonus features of an officially–released “DUNE” DVD.

David Lynch strongly objected to the extended television version of DUNE, and insisted on having his name removed from the writer and director credits of the TV version.

Fanfiltration felt it is only right to credit this version of DUNE to writer Judas Booth and director Alan Smithee, as Lynch has not approved this version.

Alan Smithee was a pseudonym used between 1968 and 1999 by Hollywood film directors who wanted to be disassociated from a film for which they no longer wanted credit. It was used when the director could prove to the satisfaction of a panel of members of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers that the film had been wrested from his or her creative control. The director was also required to keep the reason for the disavowal a secret. The pseudonym cannot be used to hide a director's failures. The choice of the pseudonym for Judas Booth as the writer’s credit may be meant to convey a feeling of creative assignation and betrayal.

The producers of the television version hastily reworked this scene with a redubbed voice for the 3rd Stage Navigator. Fanfiltration has reinserted a number of cut shots into this segment. The Emperor’s explanation of his plan to help the Harconans is from the Lynch version. The Navigator’s lines involving the spice’s importance is from the Smithee version. Fanfiltration included these lines to help viewers understand the importance of “the spice” to the characters and the plot. What follows is the somewhat altered 7th draft script, dated December 9, 1983.

15. INT. THRONE ROOM - EMPEROR'S PALACE - NIGHT

EMPEROR:
Can you hear me? If this visit has anything to do with spice...
-- The Guild Navigator shudders and swishes quite violently in his tank.

NAVIGATOR:
LISTEN TO ME!! The spice must flow…the spice has given me accelerated evolution for four thousand years…it has enabled you to live two hundred years…the spice helps make the sapho juice, which gives the red-lipped mentats the ability to be living computers…the secret side of spice…the water of life.

16. INT. HALLWAY - EMPEROR'S PALACE - NIGHT

REVEREND MOTHER (Voice Over):
He shouldn't speak of this…

15. BACK TO SCENE

NAVIGATOR:
…gives the Bene Gesserit sisterhood the metaphysical ability to see beyond…to have superior powers…Our power to fold space is in the spice…Without us, your empire would be lost on isolated scattered planets…You would be lost.

EMPEROR:
I can assure you…

NAVIGATOR:
Do not interrupt!!! Do not speak lightly of the spice…ONE SMALL POINT…

Most of this next scene plays out as it does in the theatrical version up to the end of the shield fight. Inserts from the television version will be indicated.

Some added lines between Paul and Dr.Yueh have been inserted from the television version.

The producers of the television version had reedited and rearranged a great amount of Toto’s soundtrack music, placing rehashed cues over many scenes that had no background music in the original Lynch version. This over–saturated soundtrack music presented Fanfiltration with many challenges when reediting scenes from the two versions.

The music cue under this scene is different then the Lynch version.

This version of the scene with Paul and a “Fighter” is from the television version, and includes a few more lines spoken by Gurney.

The television version has an overdubbed narration placed here that briefly tells us who the character of Duncan Idaho is.

This scene between Paul and his father is taken from the television version and contains extra dialogue, spoken by Duke Leto.

This extended scene is from the TV version, with extra dialogue between Jessica and the Reverend Mother.

The next *:** is identical to the theatrical version.

You are right, that was the rumor. Lynch debunked it on his own website a few weeks after it had started. He still has nothing to do with DUNE. Lynch is working now on his new film "Inland Empire"
I was so looking forward to the DUNE deleted footage that was to be included in the extras of that set. They would have made my re-edit of DUNE that much more special.

The film is presented in a “Pan & Scan” format; as no widescreen footage of the extended cut scenes is available at the current time of this reedit production.

So uh, are you all going to be re-doing it once the Widescreen version comes out in December? This Christmas

That link is from info posted in February, and the release date is TBA (don't know where December came from). This release has been threatened all year, but there is no final date announced as of yet. There are some non-US extended releases of Dune though.

Well again, the release has been threatened all year, with continual delays and postponements. Plus, December 25th is a Sunday this year. A DVD release on that day is highly unlikely. I don't think even Disney has pulled that (they've put things out on a Friday, though).

I'll believe it when I see it in my local Best Buy.
