I don't think that Star Wars doesn't work anymore. When the films were re-released in theatres in '97, they did astonishingly well. And the prequels have broken box office records. The world as a whole still loves Star Wars. And, even though the prequels lacked in almost every area except for special effects, we all still went to see them. There's a place in all our hearts for Star Wars, and that's why we continued to watch them and continued to hold out hope even though the quality was bad... because we love the movies, and we love the Star Wars universe. So I don't think declining innocence doesn't really matter.
