Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 125

I guess the first question it makes me ask is “why is this the first time the colour has changed?”

Palpatine has always been all the Sith, based on how things were presented and how Return of the Jedi was recontextualised.

Any time something changes it’s nature or look, there needs to be a reason why. If Palpatine is being restored, that would take him back to where he was in prior films. If it makes him different from that, it’s a question as to why.

Saying “it’s a new colour, that means new power!”… well, exactly. That new power isn’t explained, and we already have a lot of new powers and power levels that have gone unexplained. If you were gonna go back and recolour all the lightning in AOTC, ROTS, & ROTJ to match, then I’d be on board. But just in this one film seems silly.

Palpatine and Vader can both use red force lightning, I didn’t just randomly suggest it for the sake of referencing Mortis. We just haven’t seen it used in live action yet, outside of clone wars and comics.

When have we seen him use it? Is this from the legends/old EU that said force lightning came from squeezing random fruits?

No idea what is and isn’t canon anymore, When I do personnel cut of film will likely have red force lightning but would mainly just be ascendant with a few added things, still don’t get why people are adding trailer music over Rey v Kylo DS fight seems very out of place.

Not sure if I’m reading this right, you plan to do the red Force lightning in full?

I think the red lightning looks cool, the glow it provides is cool-looking and the overall effect of the red lightning hitting a purple and blue lightsaber provides a very distinctive frame, visually. It makes sense that this “all the jedi vs all the sith” symbolic throwdown contains virtually all the colors (we’re missing green, but maybe some of that can shine out when he explodes)

What color was TLJ Yoda’s lightning?

No force lightning, other than the Son’s, has been any colour but blue. Yoda called natural lightning down, which was also blue.

I think y’all overthinking this. Red = Cool, unique, and a visual contrast against Rey’s blue saber. That’s all it needs to be.

But if we have to get technical, I guess you could say stealing force power channels the deepest depths of the force and this is even more dangerous than standard lightning. It’s something on a scale we haven’t seen since the Son (or for most fans, ever).

Actually… this would explain why Palps can suddenly force blast an entire fleet…

I was gonna say. Really it doesn’t have to be deeper than pretty colors.

I’m just saying that if the movie came out in theatres that way, it would be confusing. It’s something new and different, with no introduction or setup, being introduced at the last possible moment.

Personally not a fan because of that. I guess the approach I try to make with any edit, fan or for work, is thinking story first, then cool looks. Doing something because it looks cool, even though it makes no sense, is kinda what gave us the mess that is Rise of Skywalker to begin with.

Yeah, agreed. SW has always had a flair for striking visuals, so it fits fine.

You’re making this way bigger than it actually is. I cannot understand for the life of me why you think this doesn’t make any sense.

Red lightning = more power. Even general audiences could understand that.

Based on what? Why is it more power? Electricity doesn’t work that way, we don’t have red lightning strikes…

It’s a different colour, so it would look like a different power. Where’d it come from? If it’s more powerful, why didn’t he use it before on Luke or Mace?

Well, since a lot of people didn’t ask that same question about the giant, fleet-destroying lightning storm, I think it’s fair to assume it came from him stealing Rey’s and Ben’s life force.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

More of the same visual signifies more power. New visual suggests new power.

What kind of logic is that?? It’s still obviously force lighting, and given that Palpatine was rejuvenated by the Dyad, the red lightning is apart of that. It’s just more powerful force lightning. What makes it red? The force! It’s Star Wars! It’s really not hard at all. I sound like a broken record but you’re overthinking this way too much.

Exactly! And it’s Star Wars, so applying real world logic like “Red lightning doesn’t exist” makes no sense. The first time Palpatine used Force lightning after sapping the Dyad power was his insane blast into the fleet- the audience goes “woah!” and assumes it’s extra-powerful from the Dyad (although the static-y atmosphere definitely helped boost it). The same assumption plays out if it’s also red lighting, and the audience thinks “woah!” but even more now lol.

If audiences don’t question Windu’s purple lightsaber, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Anyway, I think it’s about time we moved on from this fruitless debate.

I have my problems with TROS, but none of them can be solved via the power of fanediting, so minor changes like Leia having a purple saber, Palpatine red lightning, and the Knights of Ren actually having dialogue go a long way in giving me more enjoyment. But to each his own I guess. I should work on a minimalist cut of TROS that only makes minor tweaks and changes…

This is the only option that makes sense from a visual, practical, and canonical standpoint.
