Star Wars: Squadrons - video game — Page 2

It’s a true space flight sim! Rogue Squadron is more arcade-y.

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

Exactly.

Also for anyone having issues with controls on a standard controller, try using the Aviator control layout (moves roll to the right stick, same as pitch, and puts yaw on the left stick with the throttle), and I’d also try it with inverted flight on once to see if that feels more natural to you.

I for the life of me can’t figure out why they put roll on a different stick than pitch by default…

^i haven’t played this yet, but I bet I know. In the X-wing and TIE Fighter games the default setup had the stick control pitch and a kind yaw/roll combo (more yaw than roll) while the rudder input controlled pure roll. It allowed you a full 3 axis flight control that still felt natural but didn’t feel like a conventional airplane. Helped make it feel more like a spaceship in a way.

I bet that’s what they were going for.

Man, I was planning on waiting to get this for a while but the more I hear about it the more I want to just get it now.

Hmm, that’s not how I remember X-Wing vs TIE Fighter or X-Wing Alliance, but it’s entirely possible that I’d just remapped my joystick to my liking and don’t remember. It has been ~25 years, after all.

Hey everyone, what’s the learning curve for this type of game if you haven’t played a lot of flight sims? I have played X-Wing Alliance and Tie Fighter on PC a long, long time ago (no pun intended) and own the Battlefront games. Though, I’m average at best at these type of games. I’ve been intrigued by being able to play Squadrons in VR especially after playing the Battlefront X-Wing experience (and that is something else!). I also read up on some reviews and have heard negatives. Any positives you may be able to share?

I was afraid I would not be good at this game, and I’m not, but I’m having fun with it. I have the same experience as you, so I imagine you would be as mediocre as I! I think the key is finding your class and sticking with it. Get good at Bombers or Interceptors, something like that.

Yeah, as long as it’s fun, that’s all that really matters. Do you play this game in VR by chance? I can imagine it being quite exhilarating if the gameplay isn’t too challenging. I played Battlefront’s X-Wing VR experience and had a blast with it.

Does this have the same mechanics as the space battles in SWBF2?

Emperor: It’s not the east or the west side.
Darth Vader: No It’s not.
Emperor: It’s not the north or the south side.
Darth Vader: Not It’s not.
Emperor: It’s the dark side!
Darth Vader: You are correct!!

Not at all! It’s a completely different game, a true space flight sim.

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?

It’s easier to play in VR: you can easily look where you want, independently of your flying! And a quick look around allows you to orient yourself and assess rapidly what’s going on in the battlefield.

The game is daunting at first: it’s quite fast paced, there’s a lot to master in the cockpit but after a few hours things become to feel natural, you get better at the game, and this is where the fun begins!

My brother gave this to me for my birthday. I just played my first little bit tonight. Played the intro mission(s) and then a single round of online dogfighting. My team lost but I got first place on my team. And there was one super player on the other team who pretty much won the round for them single handedly. I killed him at least twice… this is going to be so much fun! evil laughter

I’m so happy to have a valid successor to the X-wing series! I’ve been dying for a new, honest to God Star Wars flight simulator for YEARS! This game looks to be everything I wanted! Now I’ve just gotta learn more about the upgrades and various weapons and features of the ships…

That sounds exciting! I’m highly interested in playing this in VR. I can only imagine how close to a “real” Star Wars experience this can be for a fan. I’ll definitely have to pick up a joystick as mentioned earlier in thread to complete the package. Christmas is coming up so, would be a great gift to put on the list. I’ll have to say that I’m still waiting for the ultimate Star Wars experience that was originally to be Battlefront 3. Being able to participate in ground battles but hop into a fighter and take off into space to take out Destroyers or land on one to continue the fight on board seamlessly would be amazing!

Whaaaaaat…?

Despite the TIE Defender being ridiculously over-the-top, I’ve always kinda liked it.

And B-wings? Please and thank you.

Add the Assault Gun Boat and maybe I will consider it.

Played for the first time last night, only did the Prologue and the first Republic mission, but so far it’s a very good X-Wing sequel, updated for modern times. Funny to see actual characters on screen, having pseudo-conversations with you between missions, instead of X-Wing Alliance’s emails. They’ve simplified the controls (see this vs this ), but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, and feels important for a modern audience. I mean, how often did I need to cut all power to shields just to get a little extra out of my laser recharge rate? This game’s way of doing things is fine.

I think you can turn on fine tuning for the power distribution in the options of the game.

Quite interested in picking this up. Can anyone tell me if it runs okay on the PS4 Pro? No major glitches or bugs or chugging framerate issues? I think i saw someone on a forum somewhere saying they experienced a few oddities like it deleting progress if you started multiplayer before finishing the story.

Thanks to ALL members of the forum whose tireless preservation efforts have allowed me to watch the original films as I remember them.
