It would be nice if it’s corrected in the future, this is probably one of the best 4K preservations of the original film I’ve ever seen, My favorite after the 4K83 project.

Hostmaster, I’m not seeing the compression glitch in either my copy of the 1080p or 2160p versions. Might it be an issue with your software you’re viewing it on? Try MPV player, it works great.

I downloaded both versions (1080p and 4K) from myspleen, the 4K version twice, and just the 4K version has the glitch. I have installed Media Player Classic x64 with updates codecs (K-lite Megapack).

I tried too with Windows Media player and the glitch is not present there, so I thought…“Bingo it’s something with the software like you said” so I compressed the movie into a BD50 with DVDFab11 to create a 4K UHD compatible disc, and when I played the movie in my Samsung UB-K8500 the glitch was still present 😦

Ok, thank you very much. I have to do some more tests, I didn’t try it with a pen drive directly on the TV for example. I’ll PM you as soon as I can. 😃

Nate D, I can confirm that this glitch does not exist in either the 1080p or 2160p versions, I have gone through frame by frame, as I’m sure you did. I’ve tested it with a few different players on a couple of different machines just to be sure. Hostmaster, it has to be something on your end. If it still shows up even after using MPV as Nate D has suggested, my guess is your download had a glitch.

EDIT: Sorry Stotchy, I missed that there was a 2nd page and you had already commented before I responded.

After some tests, I think irishogradyOT is right and the glitch is related to my download. Can you please PM with an invitation to the Star Wars trilogy forum?, I’ll try from there.

A lot of anger there buddy. You should actually take a look to see how grainy it is. It’s pretty minimal.

I’m in the camp of wanting to see grain that is on the negative (which tends to be pretty fine grain) which is how the film was always intended to look.

But I’m not in the camp that loves 4k83 no DNR which has many layers of grain on it from the optical printing process. It’s too much and too distracting for me to enjoy.

Yes many commercial releases have DNR to varying degrees. Typically the aim of this is to reduce picture noise and dirt and not remove grain that was on the negative. Sometimes they fuck it up like on the original Bluray of Predator but for the most part you can see grain on Blurays of any movie that was shot on film. So I really don’t think that you know what you are talking about and that perhaps your anger is misplaced.

In the case of the Disney Star Wars films most of the negative grain has been completely scrubbed off which is because the masters for these 4k releases we’re originally intended for a 3D theatrical conversion.

It looks bad so we added a layer of fine grain to mimic negative grain and to best replicate how a proper restoration would look. It also has the benefit of better matching with the replacement shots which have been DNRd but still have some fine grain.

But hey if a bit of intended grain in movies that are shot on film is enough to make you have “enough with the whole community” then it’s probably best you left anyway.

It’s easier to blend the two sources together by using a blend of DNR and film grain overlays. The uniformity of the resultant image texture makes the film more immersive, and the eye is less inclined to spot the seams where sources change and change back again. This exact same method was used for the Oohteedee versions, and will be used for the Harmy 3.0s coming soon, too. IIRC he used the same method on the 2.0 versions? I might have that wrong.

It’s not a matter of “SCREW DNR, IN FACT, LET’S ADD SOME DIRT,” it’s a matter of recognizing the pluses and minuses inherent to the source and using the tools at hand to make the most cohesive final product. Even in DNR’d versions of the OT, there’s still film grain present and visible, which makes sense because those movies were shot on film and grain is inherent to that format.

There are probably blu-rays on your shelf right now–blu-rays you think are amazing–that also, after doing a DNR pass or 2 (or 5) add a low-opacity grain overlay to the image. It’s not a weird, fetishistic film-fanatic-only move. It’s done quite a bit both professionally AND in the scrappier realm of amateur film-restoration.

FWIW, the grain plate added to this version is very subtle. It’s not like they filmed a swarm of mosquitoes and hit the clone tool and then just glued it to the blu-ray footage. It’s a very fine grain, I believe matched as closely as possible to a DNR’d version of 4k83 (which still has visible film grain in it) and laid over the UHD source. I’m sure they could speak to how they did it much more clearly (and authoritatively) than I could, but I think that’s what happened. (edit: while I was typing that, that’s EXACTLY what happened, LOL).

It’s not my preferred ROTJ restoration, but the image quality (detail, resolution) is not one of the things I’d fault for that at all: The job they did in blending the footage together - including their use of a grain overlay to match the sources - is pretty great. And I bet if you’d actually WATCHED this version instead of just reading about it, you’d likely have agreed.

Hey, that’s fine! It’s a good sign that he read the responses, which is what matters. Maybe he won’t be so hasty (and loud) in the future, wherever that is.

Seriously, the blending, detail, grain managment, and DNR is very good on this release. Everything looks as close to uniform as it can considering the obstacles to overcome.

I was looking for despecialized versions of the films too, can someone send me an invitation code to the forum?

I have to say this looks pretty fantastic even if i prefer 4K83 no DNR. Its good there is a version that is more modern for those who want the remaster but still the original, instead of the Maclunky Edition.

I’m blown away by the folks on here. A couple of months ago I never knew that anyone was trying to preserve the holy trilogy in all its original glory. I thought it lost to time, never to see the light of day again. Then by chance on twitter I found out about the 4KXX project, which led me here.

When I got here, I learned that there are multiple projects on the go. In the last week I managed to get my head round and follow the crumbs to get a hold of Harmys Despecialised editions. Not seen them yet though, as I promised my lad we would watch them together with him. But just my luck, the week I figure it out, he is snowed under with project work at Uni.

Whilst following the crummbs to figure out how to access the 4KXX versions so I can compare and decide what version I would lean into as my goto, I discover this project as well. Damn you folks are dedicated and my mind blown as to how much talent and time is involved and being devoted to preserving the movies I grew up with.

Kudos to you folks, kudos!

I’d like to name this film preservation (soon to be trilogy preservation, I hope) as an officially supported preservation in the next Project Threepio release. I’m assuming since this is based on 4Kxx, you’re planning on sticking to that same frame reference (i.e. GOUT for Star Wars, theatrical for Empire and Jedi). Is that correct?

Jedi is theatrical, Empire is theatrical also (but theatrical and GOUT are the same for Empire IIRC). Are there additional frames in Star Wars theatrical vs GOUT?

For me it’s really about making sure each film syncs perfectly with the latest hairy_hen soundtrack.

Happy to take advice.

Jedi: 4K83 is theatrical and has the latest hairy_hen soundtrack

Empire: Theatrical = PAL GOUT, but has two more frames than NTSC GOUT (at around 1:44:24), 4K80 promises to be theatrical, but the latest hairy_hen soundtrack is NTSC GOUT, so he’d need to make a new one for 4K80. So this is one of those matters where GOUT isn’t descriptive enough because there are actually two GOUT frame standards.

Star Wars: There’s one frame at the beginning of the last reel (at around 1:40:08) excluded from GOUT but is visible on some other pre-SE home video releases, but it was not on the 4K77 print (so there can be some argument about whether that frame is theatrical, but I think it likely is, it’s not unusual for frames to get lost on reel changes). Latest hairy_hen soundtrack is NTSC GOUT.

So assuming you’re waiting for 4K80 before doing Empire, then you’ll be GOUT-theatrical-theatrical, just like 4Kxx.

Actually we’re in the middle of Empire and are hoping to have it out before Xmas in which case it’ll be NTSC GOUT synched to work with hairy_hen’s soundtrack.

If a newer version of hairy_hen’s soundtrack comes out post release then it’s easy enough to do another release that syncs with it.
