Another recommendation I’d throw in, that I’m sure people will reject, is having Chewbacca die. Make Rey face consequences for giving into the darkness and hatred.

Kijimi makes this functionally impossible imo. Even if super skilled editors with the free time rotoscoped him out of all of the other scenes and we cut his reaction shots from Leia’s death, the whole reason they board the ship on Kijimi is for Chewie, and everything that happens there is a big deal.

Maaaaaybe, in theory, one could somehow get 3P0 to read the dagger inscription on/after Pasaana and completely cut Kijimi out of the movie, but boy would that be difficult to make believable, and it’d absolutely kill the already rushed pacing (and the run time for that matter).

They also find out that they physically need the dagger while on Kijimi. This could be a more focused reason to board the Star Destroyer, with finding the falcon being Finn’s/Poe’s reason for splitting off. Again, just a thought.

It’s such a major moment for her character that she believes she killed Chewie, that bringing him back feels hollow. He’s also not super present in the rest of the movie, if the focus stays on the main characters you simply don’t need to cut away to him.

Rey’s struggle with the dark side is one of the few things that carry over well from TLJ, “You went straight to the dark” and all that.

The payoff being “it’s because you’re a Palpatine so it was just your evil genes” is pretty dull though.

So say we all.

For seventeen years the renegade Pfhor scoutship jumped between the closely packed stars of the galactic core. And all over the ship, dancing through the wreckage of the Pfhor computer core, Durandal was laughing…

Watching the Ben vs KOR,

I can’t help but feel the ‘it’s over, Ben’ line is totally off.

I think we missed a trick not having one (or all) screaming ‘Traitor!!!’

Mirroring Kylo himself (to Finn) at the end of TFA.

Maybe pick a lead KOR shout it, in place of the ‘it’s over, Ben’ then have the others reciting it as an intimidating battle chant as they close in.

I’m not trying to undermine the work that has gone into the sound mixing. That in itself is great.

But the line???..

I find it hard to believe they would ever refer to him as Ben.

It’s to familiar and warm, and even if we were to believe that they were close enough to be on first name terms, are we to believe that once Ben/Kylo had abandoned his family to align with Snoke he’d be introducing himself and maintaining his old name in their company?

In my mind, when Ben joined the bad guys he abandoned that part of his identity completely and he took up the mantle of Kylo.

So, I think the two best options would be to either call him traitor as an insult and to justify their turning on him, or at least be less familiar and refer to him as ‘Solo’, since using a surname is a less warm means of addressing someone.

Anyhow, that’s just my two cents worth.

hahaha I know this is crazy, but you could do an edition in which Rey is an experiment of the dark side, like the power of darth pleiges to create life … hahahah

Yeah, I was rethinking that particular line while I was watching the clip I rendered.

I believe I decided to go with an earlier line where somebody shouts ‘traitor.’

I understood that Star Trek DS9 reference! /s

I think Rey’s struggle with the darkside works better with Rey being nobody, in that version, after learning that her parents dumped her in TLJ she develops the feeling that she isn’t wanted or worth of being with the others, that combined with the temptations of the darkside making her think that “she isn’t the Jedi, that she should be” brings her a myriad of anger issues and selfdoubt.

I find that more believable than “Maybe becomes bad because evil genes!”

Both options have their pluses and minuses. There is no “right” answer since the bad story telling/writing/character development/prior canon/philsophy has gone out the door in these movies. So the ideas between both versions … Rey Palps and Rey Nobody versions can never be perfect, let alone making sense either which way. Just try to make what works, even if there are still some holes or concepts that don’t make sense … since well, there was no real direction with these movies from Disney … so we all have to already remove the logic or things that make sense to make these edits.

Oh Jonh, that would be a pretty cool concept if doable.

Were there any explicit references to Rey’s dad being a failed clone of Palpatine? It’s been a while since I’ve watched the original film. But… y’know, just in case they said he was a clone, I hope we don’t overlook it and accidentally leave that stuff in the Rey Nobody cut.

No, that was all in the novelization iirc the movie doesn’t explicitly say he’s a clone.

It seems that in any event her parents are redeemed as good and noble, unfortunately.

I disagree, not making her parents be good people is definitely doable.

At 0:16 there is a cut extended shot of ships flying when Lando’s fleet arrives. So good! The place I just found it says it even has the Fireball (!!!) but I can’t find it. This shot in the movie is about 2 seconds long with a clip of Poe saying “Hit those underbelly cannons, every one we knock out is a world saved”. Given that the extended clip here is about 10 seconds long and the Poe clip is poorly/weirdly spliced into the shot in the original movie, I figure the audio of him saying it could just separated and then placed over the extended shot 😃

I feel like that can be edited down. We don’t need a personal connection between Ochi and Rey, he doesn’t have to kill her parents.

Absolutely nothing in the movie implies Palpatine’s son is a clone. I’d say the fact he doesn’t look like him should count as precluding it.

That’s a good find, but we’d probably need more audio to go with it for the ships flying by. Worth a shot, for sure! And we could include a few more people’s audio submissions. Anyone able to remove that watermark?

Oh my gosh that extended ship shot was beautiful I keep watching it on repeat!! I might actually send in a ship voice now if there is indeed room.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I figured it would be the same as the film; Palpatine had Ochi try to find little baby Rey (because Palpatine’s spirit sensed how strong she was in the force; new Chosen One.) And Ochi still killed her parents in the process of trying to track her down. So Rey is still vengeful against Palpatine at the end and edging towards the dark side. The only difference is that she’s not blood related to Palpy. Everything could happen the same without her being related to him, maybe. I was okay with Kylo telling her that “they were filthy junk traders” wasn’t the full truth. And maybe her finding out that her parents were good, and sensing Ben there, is her rejection from the dark?

But I guess this is just even weaker than Rey Palpatine and way too convenient for the story, lol. I’d prefer it if her parents were just scum and that’s it. But her parents being noble isn’t the worst thing ever after TLJ.

Wow! I was unaware of this shot. That lack of sound effects is a bummer, though. Really could help the visual tempo in that part of the climax, and lends a tiny bit more of a sense of geography to a battle that really has very few landmarks and internal consistency.
