Something I would like to see in a Phantom Menace edit is the removal of Podracing Arena. Make the Podrace seem like a local thing that takes place out in the desert. More a drag race than a chariot race. Tatooine is also way too populated/ prominent in The Phantom Menace.

What other movies was he in?

Dialogue can be salvaged, and if he’s got a “fantasy” look to him, a hologram can be made to cover up the costume.

That’s pretty reasonable for a master/apprentice relationship. Not to mention, the prequels making the Jedi start their training as toddlers is kinda ridiculous, training for 12 years is definitely not what they had in mind during the OT.

Besides, the prequels making the Jedi more of a bureaucracy than a creed muddies this a lot. In the OT, what it means to be an apprentice taught by a Jedi master is very different to how it’s depicted in the PT.

All these issues are probably well beyond the scope of a fanedit, but still. This is definitely a contradiction between the OT and PT.

I mostly agree, except for this being the motive for Luke breaking and attacking Vader to the point of almost losing himself. If there was a way to change Vaders dialogue in that scene then it would all work. Something else that Vader could say or use against Luke to provoke him. Maybe a threat towards his friends, lamenting their soon to be demise, or capture and torture then death. Something. Any good Vader impersonators on here?

I tried this in an old edit in like, 2016. I had my friend voice Vader saying something about how his friends were probably all going to die horrible deaths if he continued to hide, inaction would basically guarantee it. Would he allow his friends to die like that? (Never!)

I don’t know. Looking back I’m not sure if it works, because Luke’s being more rational in that version instead of instinctively going apeshit and cutting Vader’s hand off, kind of ruining the next moment where he notices himself becoming more like Vader because of that. My friend’s VO was unconvincing, anyway, so I never ended up using it.

I like the idea of Yoda not being in the prequels at all personally. Then when you meet him in the OT, he’s a jedi yea, but of a long begotten age. More pure.

Absolutely agree. And this one’s honestly pretty plausible to pull off. Yoda doesn’t have that much of an effect on the plot.

There’s Lord of the Rings, but with the long hair it would be painfully obvious where it’s taken from.

I always imagined it as a lot of people coming to where the races were, like most of the crowd were out-of-towners following the series. But then again, Anakin wouldn’t have been able to race offworld anywhere. Maybe there’s a local league thing run by the Hutts, which was temporarily hosting the main event?

Make Dooku a hologram throghout most of the movie and have him completely replace Palpatine role?

I always had this this idea that the Confederacy is created aboard Nute Gunray’s flagship over Naboo with the only time Dooku appearing in person with his own ship arriving - it can be either at the very beginning of the movie coinciding with the Jedi arrival (but then you’d have a consistency problem of why he’s a hologram if he’s on board) or after the occupation of the planet. You have the main antagonist faction established, and a serious threat with a powerful, charming leader, already in the first movie. Would require altering the Geonosian meeting room set to a ship one, though.

Then if you keep the meeting scene between Dooku and Palpatine at the end of AotC it’s actually a twist and way more powerful one. Your supposed main vilian was a puppet all along and the true bad guy is none other than the Chancellor himself!

Anyway, if he’s in as a (small) hologram in several scenes in TPM, I guess it should be more easier to disguise any editing, rotoscoping, cropping etc.

I’ve been wanting to do that for ages. Now with EbSynth and Deepfake technology, it might be possible. It sets him up as a unifying villain like Vader and Kylo. I’d actually done a test for a shot of Dooku over Sidious using EbSynth, but I don’t remember how it turned out.

There is a deleted scene of Padme in the palace talking to Panaka (or another soldier on the battlefield) on a viewscreen.

Might be usable to make it Dooku somehow.

That’s an interesting, but I’m not sure it would work. Many years ago, I tried mixing the escape from Naboo with the capture and Geonosis to have the Queen talk with Dooku, but the result was pretty bad. You really need to have shots of both parties, and cut to whoever’s speaking. The most you could squeeze in here would be Dooku saying the equivalent of “I’ll get you next time, Gadget” before tuning out.

It’s doable still.

Cut shots of Dooku (not talking yet) on a viewscreen, cut away to Padme, use Christopher Lee dialogue from another movie, have her respond, cut back to Dooku face for reaction, repeat.

Based on my test shot, I’d say replacing Sidious with Dooku is perfectly doable, so long as we can find a good enough voice impressionist for him. Also, the dialog introducing Darth Maul would need to be trimmed to leave out the part about him being his apprentice.

Still, I can’t help but wonder if it’d be too strange for Dooku to be hooded. Oh well, I guess.

Regarding the Darth Maul issue, would that mean cutting the scene with Maul and Sidious on Coruscant? Or just repurposing it? Because Sidious wouldn’t have had any establishing character moment before. Unless Dooku’s new dialogue mentions him or something.

Author

My plan was to leave it in unaltered since Maul is still Sidious’s apprentice, but I guess you do have a point about Sidious not being established. Still, maybe it can work.

I think it would be an awesome twist if Sidious was kept secret until Episode II. Audiences watch Episode I and assume Dooku is the big bad and Maul his apprentice. Go through Episode II knowing about Dooku and suspecting him to make the Empire. And then at the end, we reveal Dooku is just another pawn in a far greater conspiracy.

I know it doesn’t really matter now: everyone knows Sidious is behind it all now, but if we were designing this edit for someone who’s never seen the PT I think this would be a much better way to go about it.

Conceptually, it makes sense, and would work if PM was a differently-structured movie.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work with the overall 6 movie structure since seeing Palpatine’s subtle machinations are key to the entire overarching plot.

Wouldn’t audiences just put two and two together and figure out when Dooku meets Sidious that Sidious was behind Dooku’s actions in TPM?

A really ambitious project would incorporate Grievous in all 3 somehow, like the guy who made him Maul.

Maybe…there is a way to incorporate grievous even earlier. Maybe into the ATOC droid army. Or even further into the Neomoidian army as a lowly TK4 Roger Roger droid who wants to be more.

Or even more ambitious…make him Darth Jar Jar after all.

If I had the deepfake skills, I would edit in Maul and Grievous and Dooku to meet.

In fact, that sounds like a great idea to set up a different timeline. Instead of going Sith, Anakin is defeated. Killed? Lost? Captured? We don’t know, and the Sith make their revenge easier with 4 Sith Lords instead of 2.
