Info: Preservation of Localized Texts in the Star Wars (1-6) Saga

Hello,
I am from a website that collects information about the foreign language dubbings of various movies. With the number of dubbings that the Star Wars films have and information available, I have decided to include the Star Wars films (1-6) on my website and I am looking for help.

The USA DVDs of EP1, EP2, and EP3 contain foreign language title crawls in French and Spanish. I also have a Polish DVD of EP3 which contains the Polish title crawl and the French title crawl. I have also seen Cantonese, Japanese, and Thai versions of the opening title crawl of the prequels.

I also have the 2006 DVDs of the Original Trilogy with the French and Spanish language tracks but the Theatrical Editions don’t include the localized texts or dub credits. I unfortunately cannot check the Special Editions as the discs don’t work.

Did the Original Trilogy localize the title crawls and provide dub credits for the dubs ? I know Czech, Hungarian, and Slovak included a voiceover at the end of the film revealing the dub credits and I know that the Russian Blu-Ray provides the dub credits for one of the Russian dubs and the Italian dub for each of the films.

Thanks very much in advance ! 😃

I believe localized crawls were made for the unaltered original trilogy for German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese. A localized Special Edition home video crawl was made for Navajo (Star Wars only).

I know localized credits exist, but I don’t know for which languages (probably the first five). I don’t know if dubbing credits were included – there was no theatrical dub for ROTJ in Japanese, for example – that was all-subtitled until the later home video dubs were made.

I don’t follow much beyond the unaltered forms of the original trilogy, so there could have been a great deal of movement on this front in the past couple decades.

Also, I would not count on the text in Project Threepio to accurately reflect the localized crawl, if you decide to go digging in there. IIRC, there’s a typo in the localized French crawl which is fixed in the subtitles. But if you want the text for the Navajo crawl, that’s verbatim (sans Episode IV: A New Hope), albeit not in fancy scrolling yellow text.

Also, if you actually have access to complete, non-mangled Original Trilogy (SE is OK) dubs in Hindi, Tamil, Galician, or Turkish, let me know ASAP, as I’m very interested in those – I have all of these, but with some glaring missing sections. Or if you have any other unusual original trilogy dubs I’d be interested in.

French, German, Italian, and Spanish make sense as Disney (as well as many other) films were localized into those languages too (opening credits and several texts e.g. the Dwarf’s beds and the Evil Queen’s spell book in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”) Japanese is an interesting one as Disney films texts weren’t often localized in Japanese (I do know that the titles in “Toy Story” and “Finding Nemo” were localized in Japanese but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head for Disney.) I do know that Return of the Jedi was dubbed into Japanese for a TV showing in the 1980s before the home video release. I have this version as it was uploaded to NicoVideo awhile ago. Thankfully, I’ve saved it as it has since been deleted. The end credits are completely different from the official version as it shows clips from the film instead of the static galaxy background.

Speaking of Navajo, is there a scan of the DVD cover around the net ? I would love to confirm the actors from the dub and obtain the localized title crawl.

As for unusual OT dubs, I do know that the OT was also dubbed into Cantonese, Indonesian, Malay, and Tagalog. For Cantonese, I only have Return of the Jedi from the network TVB. For Tagalog, I only have Empire.

I might be able to get the Hindi subtitles, I know someone that might have access to the Hindi version. I would suggest checking the Blu-Rays for the Turkish dubs / subs, but only the prequels received the Turkish dub on BD, and the OT didn’t receive the Turkish dub on BD. There are Turkish subtitles on the OT Russian BD however.

The front cover of the Navajo version can be found here:

A discussion here can be found on this forum:

The problem with the Turkish dub is that the dub was made for the 1997 version, so when released with later edits, the dub of the ESB Vader/Emperor scene is reverted back to the English version (because the dubbed Turkish dialogue no longer matched the altered scene). If there was a complete Turkish dub, it’d have to be from VHS/Laserdisc/TV broadcast of the 1997 version. I’ll PM you for more info.

Maybe you could buy a 1997 Turkish VHS set and transfer the video & audio.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I’ve done the same thing with some of the old Disney dubs only available on VHS. Maybe a VCD if there is a Turkish release (which is likely as Turkish VCD releases are very common.) Turkish dubs on VCD are called “Türkçe Dublaj”

That would be the way to do it, definitely.

Apparently there was a Turkish theatrical dub, never released on home video. More to come on this later, I hope! 😉

Wait, really ?? I’ve never heard of something being dubbed in Turkish more than once before. Impressive find !

It’s possible that an earlier VHS rental release exists with the cinema dub on it, but I don’t know for sure unfortunately.

Theatrical dub of Star Wars never released in any home video formats they were all subtitled(Except ROTJ VHS I’m still trying to find it)
Thatrical dub only showed in TV for one time only
2 November 1986 Turkish National TV TRT Broadcast
This recording is nearly impossible to find 'cuz there’s only few surviving copys but non of 'em around internet
Luckily I know a VHS collector (he is a close friend of mine) have that copy and he gave it to me 😉

BTW There’s 6 Star Wars dubs in Turkey

Theatrical Dub
1993 Show TV Dub
1997 SE Dub
2004 Show TV Dub
2008 CNBC-E and Bootleg DVD Dub (This is the dub Catbus have)
2012 TRT Dub
2015 Itunes Dub

But the Theatrical Dub is the best dub I ever seen.
Han Obi Wan Tarkin fits to original perfectly 😉

There’s six Turkish dubs ?? I’ve never heard of two Turkish dubs being made for a movie let alone six. Would you mind sending me the Turkish cinema dub through PM ? Also, were the opening crawls translated into Turkish as well ? And do you know the voices in these dubs ? Also, were all three of the OT films dubbed into Turkish six times or is it just “Star Wars” that has six dubs ?

Thanks for clarifying ! 😃 From what I know, the Disney films were only dubbed into Turkish once starting with “The Lion King” in 1994 and the ones afterwards were released in cinemas and released on home media; while the others (movies made before “The Lion King”) were dubbed for home media releases.

I assume that the 1997 version is the most common one right ?

If you are unable to find the theatrical Turkish dub for ROTJ, I’d be interested in the 1993 Show TV dub, since that would be for the right version of the film and wouldn’t need to be edited except to sync.

Parisian French
Brazilian Portuguese
Finnish
Danish
Swedish
Norwegian

Western European Blu Ray Set I have has:

English
Castilian Spanish
German
Hungarian (Episodes 1-3)
Portuguese (Episodes 2-3)
Catalan (Episodes 2-3)
Polish (Episodes 1-3)
Greek (Episodes 1-3)

Japanese Blu Rays have:

English
Japanese
Chinese (I think Cantonese) (Episodes 1-3)
Thai (Episodes 1-3)

Eastern European Blu Rays have:

English
Italian
Russian (Episodes 1-3)
Turkish (Episodes 1-3)
Czech (Episodes 1-3)
Slovak (Episodes 2-3)

None of them make any alterations to the English end credits.
There are likely some additional versions that I have not mentioned. Also, I have not checked the 2020 discs thoroughly yet, nor the Disney films.

I’m assuming none of these included “theatrical style” subtitles for Greedo/Jabba, correct? i.e. it’s all just a disc subtitle track with some default unstyled font. AFAIK, the only languages that ever would have gotten Greedo subs on the film print were French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese, and I only have seen a couple of these myself. But I suppose the 97SE also had a theatrical run, so it’s possible there were others, if shown theatrically with a dub that didn’t voice over Greedo/Jabba.
