Sigh, I'm wishing I had an X0 Project frame from ESB to compare to.
I know every scene/frame has different color characteristics, but right now I'm looking for some global reference that's better than my best guess.

I anticipated a release early this week, but I'm still unsure if I want to back the 25% yellow off to 15% or not.
The thing is at 25% the opening crawl still looks drab-er than it probably should.

And now I'm noticing that boosting the Cyan brings out some very nice detail in Hoth's snowscapes previously lost in all white regions. It's very nice looking (especially the skys) and it doesn't turn white hallways blue like it would have if I boosted it in ANH. Again the Vectorscope shows that even boosted, Cyan peaks out around 50-60% so it's not unreasonable. But is it right?

Again, sigh, any advice anyone could give me at this point would be great 'cause I'm just spinning my wheels now. I don't want Smurf Wars or Goldie Wars or anything, but a little more color wouldn't be out of place. I just don't know what's right anymore.

I say go with you're gut instincts dude, the whole idea of these projects is that these are personal creations made (usually) by individuals. You see different peoples perspectives in each transfer. Those pics above of ESB look really beautiful, so go with what you think is right and I'm pretty sure it will look really nice. Please yourself first, cos there are ALWAYS gonna people who are gonna disagree with your final decisions whatever you do

Considering what you say about different colour settings working better for different sections, I say do that, wouldnt be too hard to apply the different setting to different chunks and then paste the different chunks back together.

Is anybody even paying attention to my rants anymore?

Anyway I did the only thing that was left as an option. I blew the dust off my Laserdisc set (Incredible Shrinking Aspect Ratio set) which I always felt to have pretty good colors. Wired it up and did a half dozen captures.

Wellll (yup with 4 'L's'), I learned some interesting things. Of course every scene is different as we knew. Hues could tilt left then right SIGNIFICANTLY from one scene to the next, as did intensities of every single color.

But there were 2 constants for all captures:
1) Moth3r's (and assumingly the PAL laserdisc source) had significantly smaller dynamic range to the colors. A specific color spike that looks like an 'I' on the vectorscope frequently looked more like a 'V' on my set. This is the real source of the washed out look of this set. I don't have the tools or knowledge on how to fix that if it is even possible.
2) Every single strong yellow frame needed a boost from 25-33% to match my LD set.

The capture on the previous page of this thread, showing 3PO with R2, peaks to the same level (when boosted) BUT looks slightly orange because the hue is tilted more red. Since it is not an intensity problem and there is no consistency to the hue changes, that won't be altered.

The only thing left (and I'm going to sleep on it) is an odd undersaturation of the opening crawl. I mean we're talking a need for a 75% boost!
No this isn't the only part that's less accurate, but it is something I may fix because it gives me brain itch. More likely I'll learn to live with it.

WHICH MEANS...
DVD's will be burned tomorrow... woohoo.

I'm very satisfied with what I've produced and they will have a place of honor in my DVD collection... at least for then next few months until Citizen gets his edition out and kicks my ass.

Now I can start working on L.A. Story Extended Edition. :-) Or sleep... Maybe the beach, I'm getting sort of pale working on this project.

I am too.

For those still asking, my first mailer will contain one set aimed for a.b.starwars distribution and 2 sets for a Pay It Forward system.

If you want to get it from a.b.sw read the thread for info on grabbing from there.
If you want to get onto the PIF system, step up and post on the thread.

If anyone can get these on MySpleen, let me know, I still have no one firm there.

First sets shipped.

To preserve quality I have generated an .SFV file (with Easy SFV Creator) from the original files on my hard drive.
It's burned to the DVD's so the paranoid (like me) can make sure there is no degredation.

Also, there was an offer to design covers from someone, but there's been no follow up. We'll just have to see.

Excellent !
Would you consider pasting it here in this thread ?

Thank you.

I hope others will follow your lead and provide checksums for their creations.

Let's imagine you send a disc to Tom, with .SFV included, and Tom pays it forward to Dick.
Maybe Dick isn't too tech-savvy, or maybe he smoked one too many alt.hoobiedoobie.thingies and lacks attention to detail.
Dick's still a nice guy however, so he pays forward to Harry. But the disc arrives at Harry's sans .SFV file.
Shit happens, right ? (Remember the case of the missing EditDroid JACKET_P and DVD-Rom content ?)
Not a problem. Harry can get the .SFV right here from this thread, straight from the horse's mouth as it were,
and then be confident (gazillion-to-one probability anyway) that his disc is a clone not merely a copy.

Now I've got copies of your .SFV files tucked away for safe keeping, so I'm set.
But months from now, will the external hyperlinks still be active ? Is that a (semi)permanent web site ?
If I had my druthers, I'd ruther see the contents of the files cut-n-pasted on page 1 of this thread
along with tech specs and any other info for quick easy reference.

[Of course that begs the question Will this forum still be here months from now ?
Jay has talked about overhauling this site using different software. What will be the fate of
the wealth of historical information archived within this forum ? Sure it's difficult to search,
but still worth keeping IMHO. I hope the current forum's database can be imported into
whichever new software Jay chooses.]

Edit:
You can lead a horse to water . . . .

And I tought I was paranoid DM.
I'll move the SFV links to the first post. As far as how long term those links are, it beats me. I'll try to maintain them, but again the originals will continue to float around on the DVD's. So someone will always have them somewhere.

Way way down the line, I'm sure it won't matter, I fully expect my discs to be obsolete in under a year (if they survive that long). So relax. It's not the be all end all of the OT on the line.

I would be more than willing to help seed this on Myspleen, I was also involved in helping Rikter seed the Cowclops V.2 releases if that gives me any sort of "cred". I could also help with a Pay It Forward type system since I do have a DVD-R and a good amount of blank media. Either way I'll continue to follow this thread, very interested in seeing how it turned out!

I am heading out of town in a few hours so I will be adding RTW Ep4 and 5 to powerpost (since babyhum re-releases have not come), and they should hit a.b.starwars around sat noon.

Also, Rikter and Dark Jedi, I have you taken care of.

I just got these from the newsgroups.

There is a MAJOR issue with ANH.

Right around chapter 17, after Luke looks at the twin suns and walks back in his garage, the audio goes from stereo to mono. You can even see the video do a slight flicker. It's in mono the rest of the movie.

I just confirmed it on three of my DVD players in my theater room. The signal still says stereo but sound is only coming from the center speaker. Before ch.17, it sounded great.

Someone else please confirm that has a higher end theater. I have a 7.1 system, 119" screen, 720p projector, IIx, etc.

Trust me, ANH's sound is off and this is a shame because this is one of the best releases so far! The video is very nice. I am about to test Empire now.

I confirmed it on my family room theater as well.

I tried various modes with my receiver and no luck.

Unfortunately I can confirm the problem.

I sat through the full disc originally, after I was done I added the chapter cuts and reauthored the disc.
Looks like something went wrong on the way, I'll have to get back to you on this. Looks like a v2 is in the future...

I can confirm the problem on the original disc, happens right on the fade at time 26:02

Ok, I remember now. I also shifted one edit point before I re-authored.

The time mentioned above is the location of the OLD edit. For some reason every clip that followed was set to "Duplicate Left Channel".
I have no idea how you could accidently do that for like a dozen audio clips, but that is the case.
The "click/pop" at that point has also been repaired.

Generating a test disc now. New discs will probably go out Thursday.

I will definitely send replacements to all who received the first ones.
If I need to send additional discs to help fix this and speed up re-distribution, PM me.

I will be looking forward to v2! Let me know if you want me to help you test it out.

Glad I could help and good luck.

New discs go out tomorrow (thursday). They are identified as v1.1 (the readme and SFV files on the disc are updated to reflect this).
Stoopid weird problem. I'm blaming the editing software Also it would be too hard to actually have made that mistake intentionally.

So for those that didn't notice, the last 3/4 of ANH were dual channel mono. Bleech.

Sorry about the inconvenience.

New SFV files have been generated and can be found on the discs, in the post above, and in the first post of this thread.

Darth Mallwalker, please update your post above for the new SFV if you would...

The v1.1 ANH will hit a.b.starwars as soon as I can get it!

Seems to be the case. Something (software or user) screwed up when making one change to ANH's audio after I had sat through the whole disc. I just assumed that what I fixed as all that changed, but that wasn't the case.

Empire needed no changes from the burn test that I previewed so that should be just fine.

Anyone out there find any other problems? (Say no please)

On the SW disc its seems that the whites are little too white... some of the Tantive IV hallway shots seem over blown and theres a loss detail seen in the wall compared to Mothers' raw version.

Could be my eyes only though... btw the new audio track sounds great as well as the syncing

LA Story EE: I'm scraping this project. The quality of the deleted Harry Zell scene (EP VHS tape) isn't that great, and a quick preview of it inserted at the appropriate place actually screws up the flow of the movie. Sad to see the scene out, but it was a good cut by Steve Martin. The other clip "a walk in L.A." has trailer music over it so it can't be reinserted.

RtW Star Wars: I did little brightness/contrast adjustment. In fact all I did was shift the white point about 4% or less. Just enough to make the whitest white truly white. There is little or no crushing, and a comparison of white levels in the X0 project screenshots shows them to be a pretty close match. Some detail may be lost (though I had trouble finding any real before/after evidence of it), but the white levels are more accurate. I felt this was a reasonable trade off.

Assuming all is go, I will post an updated clip of the final DVD

So wait....version 1.1 isn't the final copy? or Empire?
I got 1.1 in the mail today and I was all ready to start distributing...
