I’ve updated the Leia vs Vader sequence to get a better separation between Leia’s creme colored dress and the bluish green walls:

That looks pretty good but a tinge too warm for my taste. I set the gray point corrector in Photoshop using the gray trim on the pipes in the first shot and got something I think is a little closer to how it looked.

Edit: For some reason, that tool also lowered the blacks a bit so keep that in mind. This is just a idea

The lights are supposed to be yellowish, so the slight warmth is to be expected, but I get what you mean. Those pipes are actually creme colored, so they are not a good gray reference. Here’s how the scene roughly looks on the Derann prints:

Ok, that makes sense. So far I have been very impressed with your gradings so don’t let me slow you down. They look fantastic! I will definitely keep this thread on watch to follow your great work 😃

I am curious about some of the greens there in the shadows on the Derann print, it looks so technicolor even if the reds are a little too hot, is there any more saturation that can be pulled? The bottom right officer looks the most desaturated looking at the red and blue on his uniform.

EDIT: I may have gone too far in a few places…

I’m doing another pass on the color grading. Here’s a work in progress for the above sequence:

This “work in progress” is yet an improvement, for sure ! It looks very good.

Very good 😉 Impressive as usual Dre! 😃

Here’s what I tried based on that base then trying to move it away from some of the blues in the shadows.

Hope Dre doesn’t mind adding our own passes, it’s just a lot easier for discussion than trying to articulate such slight color changes, I don’t post assuming my grade is better than Dre’s work, I know there’s mistakes, I’m not even working in 10bit, it’s all an iterative process.

Edit: Tried to push even bluer

I kind of love that shade of ‘Dr. Pepper red’ in the room behind the officer in the bottom right panel.

Is it uncouth to ask for a LUT to see what this latest grade looks like in motion? This creative cloud subscription isn’t getting canceled anytime soon.

Since it is a different LUT for each scene, that’s not really possible, and I think it is up to Harmy to decide, if and when he wants to release some kind of preview. So, I pass on the LUTs to him, and it’s his choice what to do with them. A new update with new scenes will be coming soon…

Almost a whole reel. 😉 There are two or three scenes left.

Looking very good. Just a little note:

Frame 2 seems oversaturated and pushed too far-red and the highlights on the last shot are drifting a little purple IMO. Other than that it looks great Dre!

In a scene by scene color grading you cannot tweak individual shots. That would be a shot by shot color grading. I also don’t agree it is oversaturated, or that it is too red. For a shot by shot I might add a bit more yellow, but not much. This is how it appears on the 1997 SE print as well. It is supposed to look sun burned. It’s more yellow on the tech prints, but those suffer from a green cast, hence the yellow. The last shot is actually supposed to be more magenta, since the scene takes place near sun set.

Maybe this technique will work great to remove grain and enhance detail in shots that don’t have too much motion?

Why would we want to remove grain? The UHD is already overly grain “managed”.

When you mix 4K77 (heavy grain) and the UHD (little/frozen grain), something’s gotta give or they won’t blend seamlessly. A mixture of degraining and fake grain is pretty much inevitable at some level.

Exactly, when you’re combining (what is effectively) a first-gen camera negative (UHD) with a 4th gen release print (4K77). You need to compromise.

Will the new Despecialized Editions have all the frames that were newly discovered in the UHDs and 4K83 or will it still be GOUT-synced?
I personally think GOUT is an outdated standard that should be quickly phased out.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Degraining doesn’t necesserily mean less detail, specially if it’s a static shot or a shot with little motion. Temporal averaging and things like that can actually improve detail, reduce video compression artifacts and film grain. As far as I know, the Lowry process is some sort of motion compensated temporal averaging and all three Star Wars original trilogy of films went through this process when they were digitally restored in 4K by Reliance Media Works. So, if the goal is to make 4K77 look closer to the 4K UHD official release, I guess temporal averaging is welcome.

I think the goal is simply to make it blend, by hook or crook. You could also add grain to the UHD in order to make it blend better with 4K77. And you’ll have to add grain to the UHD, at the very least to cover up the frozen grain, but also because to most observers, the whole thing is too far gone in the DNR direction.

But that doesn’t mean you have to make everything as grainy as 4K77, you could degrain one, and regrain the other, and meet in the middle. I expect that’s what’s likely to happen.

Beware temporal degraining – aggressive use of this technique is likely what led to the frozen grain plaguing the UHD’s. But in moderation, it could be useful.

This is the best approach IMO

I agree, yes. Also we have D+77 for a modernized/grainless experience and 4k77 for a true theatrical experience.
