Could you tell me a bit more about the method you used to minimize the over-sharpening? The Star Wars UHD could certainly benefit from that too.

Another possibility might be the edge sharpening filter of the old freeware TMPGEnc. The slider setting allows negative values (-1 to -127) – presumably for anti-edge sharpening, both horizontally and vertically. (The later versions only have positive edge sharpening).

Hopefully if there’s a new 4K master of FOTR, Saruman will be Saruman the White again rather than Saruman the Faintly Greenish.

Amazing work.
I have the BD Extended Edition trilogy. I would love to have a copy of this masterpiece if it’s still available. I am happy to offer proof of ownership and a PayPal contribution.

Thanks! Feel free to send me a PM, if you haven’t already. And my restoration is free for anyone who owns the extended Blu-ray (it’s important to support the filmmakers and studios who make the films we love). Fan restorations should never be bought or sold. 🙂 But if you’re interested in donating towards the creation of future restoration releases, you’re absolutely welcome to. It’s completely optional, of course. https://www.paypal.me/44rh1n/

I know what a PM is, what does this uncommon DM mean?

It’s not uncommon. DM = Direct Message, PM = Private Message. They’re the same thing. 🙂

If that’s really the case and you think “DM” would have caused confusion, then thanks for letting me know. I just edited the post to say “PM” instead.

I honestly never thought a single person would have misunderstood what “DM” meant though, haha. 🙂

DM is very new to me. I just recently saw it after being on reddit. It’s almost always PM here on OT.com.
I figured it meant the same thing as PM I just was curious what the ‘D’ was.

DM is basically the only thing they’re called on Facebook, Twitter, etc. “PM” is pretty much exclusive to old-school forums in my experience.

I don’t get how it’s even possible for 44rh1n to send people a Dungeon Master. I mean, that’s cool and all, but put air holes in the packaging.

I was able to grab this and have it on my hard drive. What’s interesting (in a sad way) is that VLC gives me no center channel. So no dialogue. Opening it in PowerDVD gives me the center channel. I have not come across this oddity before. I imagine it’s a 5.1 issue since the 2.0 foreign language tracks have dialogue.

From what little I sampled the imagery is lovely no longer set in the Matrix!

As I type this I am tsmuxing Blu-Ray folders. It’s been years since I did this so hopefully I am doing it correctly. I’m glad that I actually have a couple BD50 blanks handy! I will need to find appropriate art for the disc.

Once I have a Blu-Ray I will find the time to have 3 3/4 uninterrupted hours to enjoy this film for the first time in many years. Naturally I will then have to find two more 4 hour blocks to watch TTT and ROTK!

That’s very strange! Audio works like a charm for me in VLC. MPV is also a great free player and it works great too. If it’s any consolation, the DTS-HD MA 6.1 and DTS 5.1 tracks were lifted directly from the Blu-ray with no tampering whatsoever (other than merging parts 1 & 2 together with mkvmerge for V3).

There is definitely something odd about the audio track – I’ve seen this same behavior, but I forgot which software it was that did it (could have been a version of VLC). I’ve been using burned discs so I don’t see the problem on my hardware player. I’m wondering if the DTS lossy core isn’t the same as the DTS lossless – that way it would only appear in players that had trouble decoding the lossless. I saw the same with the audio on the official discs. To test this/fix this, you could decode the DTS-MA lossless to multiple WAVs and then re-encode it again, and then presumably the lossy core would match the lossless audio again.

Which versions did you guys download? I’m not having any issues on my end, and this is the first I’m hearing about this issue. But I definitely want to troubleshoot it if multiple people are having this problem! 🙂

This one: 44rh1n’s “The Fellowship of the Ring” Extended Edition Color Restoration V3 v1.0

It’s just VLC that won’t give me a center channel. The burned Blu-Ray seems fine (I sampled various scenes). Watching it on a 74 inch HDTV is an eye opener. Normal color instead of Matrix Green = AMAZING. Finding 4 hours of free time is not easy right now so I hope that I can have the chance to watch this in its entirely soon.

Also saw the same issues with the audio tracks right off the commercial discs, so I doubt it’s specific to a version. It may be hard to test if the conditions for making it fail aren’t fully understood – Matt may be invaluable here, as the only one who can reliable repro the issue. I could extract and re-encode the DTS-MA audio if that would help (I have all the right tools for it), but I’m heading out for a week, so I’m not sure if someone else wouldn’t be better for that.

I’ll try and find the time to test the file on some additional media players.

When I tsmuxed for BD folders I pulled it up (inside the STREAM folder) with VLC and had the same issue. No center channel for either DTS track so no dialogue. But again, the BD that I burned plays fine and has fantastic sound.

Are you on the latest version of VLC? I find it odd that you’re able to reproduce the issue in VLC, yet VLC plays the center channel on my end. Hmmm.

Could also be a bug in the mixdown from 6.1 to 2.0 in the software somewhere, if that’s being done.

Oh, and IMO it’s not entirely clear the problem is a missing center channel. You should still get dialogue bleed-over in the L/R channels if you just mute the center. But this thing, IIRC, was just zero dialog, like a whole different mix, or something created from combining the surround channels only. I’ll also see if I can repro the issue here, but it may take a while.

I wasn’t able to repro the issue either, both VLC and MPC-HC, the only software video players I’d ever used. So IMO whatever I saw was either a bug fixed in a newer release, or something in the Windows audio mixdown to stereo, which may be different since I’m using a different machine now than when I saw this before.

Thanks for looking into it! Yeah, I couldn’t produce the problem on my end either, on any of my computers or players. So I wonder if it’s a system setting or something.
