I showed my brother (who works in the film industry) the Naboo shot and this is what he noticed:

  • The shot pans to the right but the Star Destroyer stays in one place which wouldn’t be the case if this was captured with a real camera. Use some motion tracking on the Destroyer to match the movement of the “camera” as that would greatly improve the shot.
  • You can tell the smoke effect is just the same element copied on top itself, smoke doesn’t travel that fast and, smoke would never be that big at that scale. Big explosions in Star Wars don’t really have smoke to begin with so if someone has a clean plate of an actual Star Wars explosion and you used that it might look better.
  • He was also put off by the lens flare because, as he said it, “There are no lens flares in Star Wars, it looks like Star Trek.” An explosion from the height of the Star Destroyer wouldn’t cause a lens flare.
  • The light flash on the palace is unnecessary because the Destroyer is behind the palace (over the city of Theed) and the flash looks like the light source is from the front.

I noticed the Star Destroyer looks unnaturally fuzzy compared to the Naboo Palace. Sharpen it a little bit but try to maintain the “in the upper atmosphere” look that you’re going for.

Keep up the good work snooker, this shot is looking better and better with every version!
