The New Republic EP1: A Vergence in the Force 4K (The Mandalorian Season 1 Edit) [V4 RELEASED] — Page 4

So, after discussion with @jkimm I’m exploring the idea of cutting out the first trip to Nevarro and starting on Arvala-7. However, there is still some exposition from the first Nevarro trip that I want to retain, particularly from the armourer scene.

Here is the first edited scene… the client… this is the first time Mando will meet the client.

Its only the centre audio channel at the moment to get an idea of how it flows.

Any updates on a final version yet? Super excited to check out the finished movie!

The project was basically finished and then I was persuaded to consider cutting the first trip to Nevarro, which actually works very well.

It means the movie now starts as the Mando approaches Arvala-7.

That has meant a bit more work to retain few lines of exposition from the cut scenes and add them into the other Nevarro scenes. That work is mostly completed.

The thing that has taken a bit of time is constructing a pan shot of the Razorcrest approaching Arvala-7. I’ve just cracked the visual pan, I now need to sort out the music transition

So I’m getting there. Completion might have to be pushed back to the start of August.

Is there any footage from the second trip to Arvada that could be usable for that transition? I haven’t looked at either scene in a while.

Thanks! Great to be back. The hunger has returned!

So protect Arvala Opening has now been finished. Took a bit of time because I recreated the starfield around the iris transition, create the hyperspace exit and re-do the opening crawl. Then I couldn’t get the music to transition from the opening theme to the Arvala scene so I had to rebuild the sound mix and re-score it.

However, its now done so I’m back on track. The opening crawl doesn’t flow as well as I’d like so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

For me the color of the opening crawl Doesnt look Star Wars at all. It should be a classic one on my opinion, especially that the effect u want to achieve is to have a theatrical SW experience

I think at this point, considering how well liked Rogue One is (and to a lesser degree, Solo) the argument can be made that “The Theatrical Star Wars Experience” can just cold-open after “A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away…” now. Maybe it couldn’t have done that before, but it’s fairly accepted now, and honestly - it probably just works better here.

I’d suggest just cutting the crawl entirely. You don’t need it for a Star Wars movie to still feel like a Star Wars movie.

Solo also had an opening crawl. For me it’s a crucial part of a Star Wars theatrical experience. In terms of the font colour. I’ll be producing 2 versions… the pale Mando version and a classical yellow Star Wars version.

oh, sorry, I thought the yellow one is only for Episode VII version 😉

About Solo, there was a kind of opening crawl there, but not the classic one. Actually, I think it would work veeery well in the Mandalorian. And It would Save you a lot of work actually 😄

It would certainly save me work! These pan shots are very time consuming to construct!

I wonder if it would flow better to cut Mando in the cockpit so that the first time we see him is stepping off the Razor Crest? I suppose you could include the shot of him from behind. It would add a little mystery to who is piloting the ship as it descends on the planet.

This sounds like a great idea. I haven’t watched the show, so if I watch this edit, I can let you know what I think.

Wow. It would be great to get the perspective of someone who hasn’t seen the show. I would still recommend watching the show because there is a lot of cool stuff that I haven’t been able to include.

Actually I think I may go for a halfway house on this. I’ll cut the frontal cockpit shot and leave the shot from the rear. It’ll give the opening a real TPM vibe… similar space pan, shot of Mando from the rear, ship lands and a frontal Mando reveal.

Sounds good. If you really want a TPM vibe, replace the child with a baby jarjar. 😄

Really love this idea, glad it’s being incorporated.

Solo also had an opening crawl.

I mean, It could have been a crawl, but it didn’t actually… crawl.

I feel like just cold-opening is the best call, but if you feel like you need it something up front to make it “feel theatrical” I’d agree with the post above that suggests you do it in the A Long Time Ago font like Solo did, and fade the text in and out between paragraphs

FWIW, I’d recommend the Rogue One style opening. ALTAIAGFFA card, then cut to an opening shot. I don’t imagine backstory or exposition via text would be any more useful for a movie adaptation than it was(n’t) for the original show.

My stance on revising fan edits.

It didn’t crawl, but it served the function that the crawl serves… it was just executed poorly in Solo. With the convoluted setup, and how much has been cut in that first act, I think a traditional crawl is helpful. That allows a context to be formed about who The Mandalorian is and why he’s travelling to retrieve The Child. Also, with the goal of making it feel like a traditional Star Wars film, instead of the anthology content it already is, using the format of a traditional saga film makes sense.

Half of the introductory episode has been cut, all of that exposition is being moved into the crawl.
