The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released) — Page 187

Well put, and that’s basically my take on it. I like the TIEs NOT following them into hyperspace, making a clean getaway. But I’m okay with it if it helps make for a more clean and effective removal of the skipping sequence itself.

It treated hyperspace as straight-up teleportation. Felt like HGTTG.

If I was competent and could do CG work, I would think just making the TIES enter the shot and veer off course or something. I dunno … just the whole TIE thing is just so bad, it makes absolutely no sense and breaks how things work in Star Wars. It’s like this movie has a scene where water and oil do mix together perfectly.

Could the current cut simply work with both removed TIEs at the end of the chase, and keeping the lightspeed skipping banter afterwards?

I don’t think we actually need to see the fighters following the Falcon to explain why it’s on fire the next time we see it.

Edit: yeah it would be great to have a new FX shot where the TIEs veer off after they lose the Falcon.

That’s something that has been particularly problematic to me, you NEED that scene when the falcon is on fire since it’s the first time Finn, Rey and Poe have been depicted together and it establishes their relationships with each other for the rest of the film… But I can’t stand a single second of that stupid argument scene! That dialogue! Oh my god!

To have them mention lightspeed skipping to me goes better with the TIEs chasing them into hyperspace. What we saw Poe do with the ice wall doesn’t seem to fit that description.

Change the line to Ice speed skipping. Done.

Lol “ice speed”

Thinking ahead, how might we do a group commentary track? Through Zoom? We could stream the movie through there and each maintain our own recordings of our own voices, to be edited together later.

We could either make it a real party or just have 3-5 commentators. As long as sync isn’t an issue a party would be okay, but I would be a little concerned about sync.

Also, anyone want to add the planet Coruscant to the establishing shot of the roundtable scene? It can be as close or distant as is workable, perhaps distant enough to recognize its wholistic appearance and make sense not to appear in the window later. Snooker?

I think it would help if you could see the Falcon visibly damaged immediately after breaking through the ice wall. Like add some smoke and flames. I’d also like to see the TIEs begin to follow and then veer off course after the Falcon jumps, although that might be tough to implement.

Also here’s an idea to make the lightspeed skipping talk feel less out of nowhere. Finn would have to be removed from the background of the cockpit and his voice processed to sound like it’s coming over the intercom. The music edit is also pretty rough and could hopefully be done better: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x5ShgpQTW1F45pNhWtahLPnlKkuPxW_3/view?usp=sharing

You can record group chats very nicely on Discord. It seems that whenever I try to chat live with Americans on Zoom, connection and audio quality is a real issue. It’s stylistically fucked.

Could you conduct the commentary over whatever service and also have each person simultaneously record their own voice to assemble the final commentary later?

Just watched the V3 workprint I think that R2&3PO theme should be turned up just a little atleast at the start. definately should be quiet as possible at end of it.

I think we could come up with a interesting dialogue change for the two stormtroopers commenting on the Knights Of Ren, maybe something in relation to changes or messages we wanna get across in the edit.

Heres some random ideas I thought of.

Stormtrooper 1: “Knights Of Ren”
Stormtrooper 2: “We don’t need help from those cultists”

Stormtrooper 1: “Weren’t those Snoke’s guards?”
Stormtrooper 2: “Not anymore”

Stormtrooper 1: “Snoke’s old guards”
Stormtrooper 2: “It’s been years”

Interested to hear anyone else’s ideas.

I like this! Perhaps: “Knights of Ren.” “We don’t need help from that worthless cult.”, to imply they’re sidelined and only really a part of Kylo’s whole thing.

There’s no time to replace “ghouls” with anything longer.

Also, we figured no one would see Klaud in that shot unless you already knew he was there.

I don’t know about that. We live in an age when people regularly watch movies multiple times, and pause and rewind movies to find Easter eggs. If this was the version released in theaters I’m sure there would have been a million articles on this “blunder” like the Game of Thrones coffee cup.

So just to add my two cents, I am fine with option A or B of the lightspeed skip presented. However, B is growing on me as it is sort of cool to present an “adventure” that happen off screen. My mind helps fill in the blanks of the Falcon occurring damage in a dogfight in their off-screen pursuit, hence the flames when Poe and the gang return to base. Also I am all for the removal of “Ghouls”. The audio isn’t clean and I cringe every time I hear it. Although it isn’t a hill I’m willing to die on if it doesn’t bother others.

The lack of Prequel connections bothers me the most with this trilogy. Someone asked JJ Abram’s why there wasn’t many and all he said was that Rey deflecting force lightning was a prequels reference, so stupid if you ask me. Deflecting force lightning is just common Star Wars knowledge.
