Info: Just Rey

Like a lot of people, I was disappointed by the ending of The Rise of Skywalker. I was a fan of where Rian Johnson seemed to be going with Rey’s character in TLJ and wanted to revise the ending of TROS to reflect where I thought he was heading. In this version, Rey sees the ghosts of Luke and Leia on Tatooine, but instead of taking their name, declares “I’m Rey.” I added more of a somber score based on Rey’s theme to end the trilogy on a more reflective tone than the usual fanfare.

Here’s a link to the scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaAXOCa15uE&t=2s

And if you’re interested in how we achieved the effect, we have a tutorial here. It’s so subtle that most people I’ve shown don’t even notice the effect, but it did take a lot of finessing to get perfect, and we were lucky with the shot timing and focal length:

Hey Flash Sideways!

Yes, I posted the vimeo clip above. I had the exact same idea, and while searching for “Just Rey” I found your clip! I think I even sent you a youtube PM about it a while back, asking if we could use it here, but I ended up just doing it anyway for fun (had a lot of time in lockdown). Your tutorial gave me some ideas for the tracking and I think the end results were similar. Your work is great, and it’s always fantastic to see under the hood!

That’s awesome. Sorry for not getting back to you about using it, but glad to see you found the tutorial helpful. I’d like to make it available for people to use for their edits, but I’m not sure where to host it. It looks like megaupload is the go to for fan edits. What would you recommend?

Lot of people use passworded Vimeo uploads that allows downloads. I’d certainly be interested in this if you have it without the music, it’s great work!

No worries at all! People use many different methods to share shots here. I tend to use vimeo to share work-in-progress, and then when it’s done vimeo allows you to make the clip downloadable, which puts a download button next to the player (and if you click “Original” when downloading it be the exact file uploaded, so in my case prores files). I also use google drive, which seems to be more and more popular here. It’s nice because, like vimeo, allows you to share file and uses youtube’s player if you don’t want to download!

Edit: Agree with liambrazier about password-protection, that’s one of the things I like about vimeo!
