This is amazing work. Thank you for your hard work!

I’ve switched my focus over to the 50GB versions entirely now, so I am finishing up some flyers for inside the blu-ray cases which have some notes about the special features on discs one and two, and inside a listing of audio options and chapters. Should have something up here in a couple days. I think I’m ready to call this “done”! (for now, haha)

I assembled my copies using your covers and the early flyers you posted, and it looks amazing. Stunning work man 😃

I know you said that you were sticking with the 50GB versions… But could you kindly do one more correction for your 25GB ESB covers?

It should read ‘learn’ instead of ‘lean’

I would be most grateful, as I want to make a set but the spelling is bugging me.

No need to do so now, I’ve managed to sort out changing things on the templates… Thank you!

I know there needs to be some tweaking, but I’m very pleased you like it!

Will spur me on to find some other good McQuarrie art to use.

I had to come back here and say thank you again to stealthboy for sharing not just your ideas, but your source files.

After months of tinkering, experimenting and about a week of production, I have completed my box set (x5 as I am giving away a few sets as part of a Star Wars 40th Anniversary screening in my back yard this weekend)

This is almost identical to your original files, except for a few small tweaks… I updated the flyer for my final configuration of the boxset - 11 discs (3 NJVC feature 50GB blu-rays, 4 NJVC documentary blu-rays, SW SSE and ESB and Jedi Grindhouse blu-rays and a final disc of a DVD of the 1978 holiday special). I also added a 16GB flash drive (which I refer to as the “Stolen Data Tapes” 😃 to each set with supplementary material best enjoyed on a computer - scripts, concept art, poster art, the radio dramatizations and remastered soundtrack albums.

As to the design, the one thing I did have to change was the size of the slipcase since my set ended up needing more space and while I was at it, I replaced the plain black background of the top/bottom/spine with a starfield background that I created while playing with Gimp.

It took me quite a while to come up with a box construction method and way to attach the glossy printed artwork that I was satisfied with. Ultimately I ended up constructing the box with masking tape and attaching the artwork with scotch permanent double sided crafting/scrapbooking tape.

I could not be happier with the final results.

The “Stolen Data Tapes” thumb drive fits under the tab that normally holds the paper flyer in my fourth blu-ray case for supplemental materials.

Finally… here are all five sets ready for this weekend. One set is for me to keep. Three are gifts for very close friends and I think I will now use my “spare” set as a prize for whoever gets the highest score on a Star Wars trivia quiz I am going to hand out at my 40th anniversary backyard screening of Star Wars this weekend.

Thank you once again, stealthboy. You saved me TONS of time by sharing your source files.

Hey everybody. This criterion set looks absolutely amazing. My main issue is trying to construct a box to hold my blu cases. Can anybody advise how they went about making theirs? Material? How to thread?

Also, I know selling the discs is frowned upon but is anybody making the boxes for sale?

Thanks
Mike

I am in progress of working on this. Trying to cover sizeimg for 3 12.5mm Blu-ray cases.

What materials did you start with? I was thinking of finding an existing blu ray box and then attempting to cover it properly, but now that I’m doing the 14mm Criterion boxes that maybe harder to find.

I have the materials and interest to do one more copy of my box set, and I was thinking of documenting the construction process and posting details along with step-by-step photos here in the technical forum.

I will try to do that this weekend if I get a chance.

Here is the shorthand version of what I arrived at after about a half dozen different variations of box construction and covering.

Materials:
HP glossy brochure paper (8.5x11) - three sheets necessary to cover my size box
100pt (2.5mm) chipboard 8.5x11 sheets - two sheets necessary to provide the 5 sides of the box
standard 2" masking tape roll to build the box
1/2 inch Scotch permanent double-sided tape to adhere the covering to the box

Tools:
cutting mat
Fiskars rotary cutting tool
steel ruler with millimeter markings
clear straightedge for aligning cuts

My box set is 3x 17mm criterion cases (3-disc cases) + 1x 14mm criterion case (2-disc case)

Through experimentation, I found that with coverings taking up some space, I prefer to have the interior pieces (top, bottom, spine) be 71+ mm in width (I typically will slightly overshoot the 71mm marking intentionally). This allows the individual blu-ray cases to slide in and out easily, but not flop around or fall out unintentionally.

My 5 pieces of the box are
2 sides: 177mm x 138mm
2 top/bottom pieces: 135mm x 71mm
1 spine: 177mm x 71mm

My covering is three pieces:

1 piece that covers the spine and folds over/overlaps onto the top/bottom/sides by several mm
1 piece that covers the top/front
1 piece that covers the back/bottom

After many unsuccessful and dissatisfying attempts to find an acceptable method for adhering the cover, I ended up using double-sided tape instead of glue. It took just a couple of tries to work out the best way to use the double sided tape.

General procedure is:

  1. Cut out materials

  2. Assemble the box using masking tape on the outside edges of the 8 seams between the 5 pieces

  3. starting with the spine covering use the double-sided tape to attach the cover. On the spine, overlap the tape so 1/4 inch is on the spine, and 1/4 in is on each of the other faces of the box. Fold the spine piece so that it runs over the edge and onto each of the other faces - held in place there by the tape.

  4. Starting with the top of the box, put double-sided tape on the 4 edges of the top. DO NOT overlap this tape. The full half inch of tape should be on the top surface of the box - all the way around the four edges of the top

  5. Align the front/top cover piece with the front face of the box so that the top portion is in the correct place and THEN fold over and press to adhere the top in place. (This will leave you with the front “loose” so you can later go back and add tape there.

  6. Repeat the same procedure on the bottom of the box with the bottom/back cover piece. You will end up with the covering adhered to the spine/top/bottom.

  7. The top/front piece and the bottom/back piece also have a small (about 8-10mm) additional area that will extend past the edge of the top or bottom. This piece is designed to be adhered to the bottom edge of the front/top edge of the back so that the main covering is overlapping onto it and completely covering the edge of the box. Using double-faced tape, adhere these flaps down onto their respective faces.

  8. On the back, run double-faced tape around all the edges - including over the flap that was taped down in the previous step, and then carefully fold from the bottom up toward the top and press to adhere the cover to the box. Note that at the top, the double-sided tape should not be quite to the edge, so that there is no tape sticking out… leave it a few millimeters from the top edge.

  9. Repeat the procedure of step 8 to adhere the front of the box cover.

  10. The design of the front/top and back/bottom pieces have flaps of material that extend past the open edges. These are designed to be folded over and run to the inside of the box, covering the edges all the way around. This is the one place where I use glue (just standard Elmer’s Glue All). Cut the flaps at the four corners, fold and glue the flaps inside the box. I normally do the long edges first, and then the short edges. I think this results in a better corner.

That’s it.

I will try to add photos and create a new thread in the technical discussion forum, but this is my procedure in a nutshell.

This was my most challenging part of the project, and I am very pleased with how it ended up, so I’m glad to share what worked for me if it helps someone else out.

Wow, thanks a lot. Great information. This would be my first attempt so I’m going to try to soak that all in and start on supplies. Pics would be super helpful.

Also, can you tell me where you were able to purches the 17mm 3 disc Criterion type case? Another idea of mine was just place the entire trilogy in one of those cases and looking for cover art that would correctly fill the 17mm size.

Hmm… I got my cases from Casetopia.com

It looks like they do not have the 17mm/3disc Criterion discs listed right now. I have sent an email to them to see if they are just out of stock or if they no longer carry them.

I would like to stock up on some more 3-disc cases for these and other projects.

As for the inserts, I just ended up using stealthboy’s 14mm covers as my basis. I had planned on expanding them slightly, but was pleased enough with my tests that the 14mm covers worked well enough that I didn’t bother with any changes.

Wow, those look fanstastic wombat_94! Glad my source files helped. You really executed well on that. Excellent idea on adding the star field to the slipcase!

I’m totally stealing that USB “stolen data tapes” idea 😃.

Thanks for sharing all over your Criterion box art. Do you know if there is an option for an all in one (3 disc 17mm case) cover art utilizing the same McQuarrie style art? If I cant come up with a way to build a box to hold 3 cases, I may just go with a complete trilogy in 1 case.

Thanks in advance

You should make a version with harmys official covers or the original poster art

I believe Crit is 14mm spine in US and our normal Blu Ray cases are 12mm

Silly question but can someone tell me what Criterion blus Ray cases are in terms of dimensions? Here in the UK we just have standard dvd cases and standard size blu Ray cases. Are criterion blu Ray cases the same size as a regular dvd case with a 14mm spine?

Hi stealthboy,

Swear i was just crying when i saw your work. It’s fantastic.

Is there a way to add chapters list on the individual flyer’s back for 50GB DISCS?

Thanks.

Ok first of all, fantastic work stealthboy and wombat_94. I’ve been fiddling around with making these myself for several weeks. I’m to the point of building the box, and I used 3x17mm criterion cases and 1x14mm case, because I had to go with the 25GB versions, partially because the download links for 50GB didn’t seem to be working, but also because I think 3 discs per set looks awesome, and also because I went with glossy printable blu-ray discs which look AMAZING, and I could only find them in 25GB.

Anyway, I’m having an issue printing out the box cover, because the spine seems too narrow. Stealthboy, I’m thinking maybe you shared the 4x14mm version, which I think is for the 50GB disc version? Or maybe there are 3 disc 14mm criterion cases that I haven’t been able to find, and that’s why my box set it too wide. Or maybe there was another version of the box images that you didn’t upload to the Google Drive share?

Wombat_94, I really like your starry field version as well (or if anyone can provide those images who got them from him at some point), and it seems clear that you and I are using the same box and case dimensions, so I’m thinking things will fit right. I don’t even need source files, I think the final images would work fine.

Anyway, I’m this close and I’m getting pretty excited, just trying to work out making the boxes right now.
