Idea & Info Wanted: The Force Awakens - a PG edit? — Page 2

Some things I’ll suggest:

  • Add a shortened Disney logo at the start and end, the former with the first half of the Williams arrangement of the Fox fanfare playing over it (the second half will play over the Lucasfilm logo as usual).
  • Keep the profanity, in the franchise it’s never enough to bump any of the films up to M.
  • Maybe subtitle the dialogue of Chewbacca, R2-D2, and BB-8?
  • Definitely cap things off with an MPAA “white stripe” PG bumper.

If you’re gonna make the sage more kid friendly, the one thing you should do is dub the text (crawl and subtitles). I remember not being able to read the crawls as a kid, and honestly, even now it seems kinda silly to have people reading a large chunk of text in your film.

I mean, that’s literally the only example of censorship in the SE’s. Nothing else in ANH or anything in ESB or ROTJ were censored when it was resubmitted to the MPAA in 1997, and again, both TPM and AOTC were given PG ratings in 1999 and 2002.

A lot has changed since then. Hard to think of many movies in recent years with similar content to the first 5 Star Warses that haven’t been rated PG-13. I’d bet if the films were made today they all would get PG-13, save maybe TPM.

A man gets cut in half. I’d say that would be PG-13 today.

Reading R + L ≠ J theories

For context, Lucas actually added that bloody dismemberment in the cantina just so the film wouldn’t get a G.

There was also that shot of the smoldering remains of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. It still got a G. What convinced the MPAA to bump it up to PG on appeal was a screening for children where one of them freaked out upon seeing Captain Antilles getting asphyxiated onscreen by Darth Vader.

The smoldering bodies bit was. The Antilles thing, however, got it the PG rating completely by accident, 'twould seem.

Honestly, no amount of cuts will turn this into a good movie, and any young one is better off seeing the original classics. Tell him that TFA is a boring ripoff and TLJ is a nihilistic middle finger (“naughty word”) to the fans. They were made by greedy people who didn’t care about making Star Wars good anymore.

The young lad will likely see the classics regardless - though the OP, as stated… ‘I have a 7 year old son who desperately wants to watch The Force Awakens’…

Mate, this thread is for coming up with ideas and suggestions to help achieve a PG Edit of the The Force Awakens film. It is not for people to put a downer on the ideas and contributions here - or give their opinion it is not worth the effort - in the way you have.

The young lad doesn’t likely need to be told to enjoy TFA & TLJ or not. Maybe he can even watch them with an open mind…

Though feel free to take your views to the TFA and TLJ review threads.

I did both. I pointed out it is NOT worth the effort in my opinion, AND that those two scenes (barely) earn it the “PG-13” rating. Otherwise, if a 7 year old kid (in the view of their parental figure) can handle Episode II, then they can handle this. People get very defensive sometimes, but I can’t recall the last time I’ve told someone NOT to make a fan edit, if they really wanted to.

I have a 7 year old son who desperately wants to watch The Force Awakens. Being the responsible parent that I am, I’m not entirely comfortable with him watching an M-rated movie (Australia’s equivalent to 12 or PG-13).

I’m planning on creating an edit that would allow TFA to pass as a PG movie. Anyone got any thoughts on what would need to be cut to achieve this?

Just put “video game graphics”/censored signs over Han’s death.

I would say to cut the blood from the beginning scene, the scene where Kylo is shot and bleeding out in the forest while punching the wound, and shorten or reframe the shot of Han’s final moments with Kylo. Most the film should be ok, at least here in the U.S. If damn it bothers you, go a head and wipe it.

As for the 2nd movie. Recut, or reframe Snokes final moments with Kylo. Cut Kylo’s nipples.

3rd movie i think is mostly harmless.

Here’s what I’d suggest to tone it down.
-Lower onscreen death body count
-Trim or remove Kylo hacking Lor San Tekka down
-Trim or remove Poe’s interrogation
-Remove Finn cursing in the Falcon
-Trim the rathtar scene?
-Trim Force vision Kylo massacre where he impales the guard
-Trim/remove Finn fighting stormtrooper
-Remove Finn yelling that’s one heck of a pilot
-Trim or remove the balcony scene (this will be the hardest part of making the edit PG imho)
-Trim Kylo punching his wound and blood
-Triim Finn and Kylo duel

The maker of this thread specified he lives in Australia, you guys may not be aware of this, but here’s a fun little fact, the words “Hell” and “Damn” are not considered swear words here. Believe me, you could hear a 5 year old say them and no one would bat an eye.

Because of this funnily enough, to the ears of an Australian, the Star Wars franchise is basically free of any kind of vulgarity!
