I’m with snooker. If anything, it’s a nice little reference, but I don’t think it couldn’t just be another similar moon.

I also don’t think removing it would look very good because you’d just be leaving an empty space for the Falcon to jump to in the shot. You could try to swap/change the planet texture.

I moved Kylo over a bit, and I reversed the direction of the camera. This way, Kylo is moving out of frame and the focus is drawn towards the ship. I also adjusted the music timing to hit on the wipe.

I know this is a bit late, and maybe not relevant to Hal’s cut specifically, but I was reminded of this comment today while watching the v2 workprint (which is great btw, Hal, as are the other planned changes).

If anyone really wants to lean into canon with the Palpatine clone thing for an edit of the movie, the absolute simplest, easiest way to do it, without deepfake special effects, is to just dub over two little words of dialog.

Kylo Ren to Rey in the hangar, original:
“My mother was the daughter of Vader. Your father was the son of the Emperor.”

Kylo to Rey in the hangar, edited:
“My mother was the daughter of Vader. Your father was a clone of the Emperor.”

Does this raise weird questions since it’s not elaborated on further? Maybe, but so does him having a son, and if anything this helps further cement the whole Palpatine is back from the dead because his spirit is in one of several clone bodies thing that the original movie glosses over.

How about leaving the shot of the Forrest Moon and have the Falcon fly in an arc down to it, instead of doing a quick camera pan to a different moon?

Maybe a slight pan down to the forest moon and then the falcon roars by and arcs down to the moon? 😐

I believe it is the only shot. If you think it would work that’d be great since the shot clearly is intended to say “See, Endor is here and then over here is this other thing.”

Since we’re discussing that part of the movie, I wanted to ask something. Why did we remove the shot of the Ewok’s from the front?

It seemed to me to break up the moment too much, and too heavily imply Wicket was gonna pop up again later to help. It seemed more effective with just a short shot.

Looks great Poppa. My only issue is the time frame between Rey running toward the ship, Kylo staring, and the ship flying away. This makes it feel like Kylo was just standing there the whole time it took for Rey to run over to Ochi’s ship and take off. Seems like he would call out to her or maybe use his force powers to prevent the ship from leaving. Even though you did an excellent job, I think it might be better to stick with the theatrical version.

Since the first big version of Ascendant is sticking with Rey Palpatine, I wish there was a moment in the film where we had a version of the Emperor’s theme, but with a female choir. Like maybe you could hear it as Rey is entering the Exegol temple. But I don’t even think a female version of the Emperor’s theme exists anywhere. Or even a dark side version of Rey’s theme.

Yeah, that was always an issue with this new shot. It requires some playfulness with time. It’s probably simpler to just leave it out!

I also noticed, but that’s personal, that jonh’s ghosts scene gave me a quite different feel while watching the whole movie. I mean, at first it was only a single scene, but now it really feels like something that should have been there from the stars. It also connects the three trilogies better than anything else (Ben from OT, Anakin from PT, Luke from ST).
I also liked the subtle DOF motive during the Death star duel.

Oh, and about the Dagger. I’ll have to rewatch the scene. At first I didn’t get your intention, but that’s probably because I was trying to notice every change (I’ve watched TROS countless times for that awful edit of mine, like I’m sure many of you have). To enhance your point you could maybe add some whispers as Rey is holding the Dagger in front of the Death Star? It could work with 3PO’s like “Only this blade tells”. Tells. Like, literally.

EDIT I think some parts of the Mustafar sequence could be used. The wide shot with TIEs looks ok to me. The volcanic eruptions look too real-world IMHO, while the shot of stormtroopers getting out of the transport too animated. But I like the landing (not the last frames when the camera inclinates).
That’s such a great work though. There are just very minor issues for me and I’d totally watch and enjoy any edit with those shots.

I second the point with the whispers - the idea is great, but I fear that most people would miss it, since the whispers are almost too subtle. 😃

And to add to that: I really liked the “for Skywalker” shouting, but again I could barely here it and had to skip back again to understand what everyone was shouting.

But don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the workprint so far - actually it was the first time I could enjoy TROS, so thank you for that, Hal and everyone else working on it. 😃

Having rewatched the scene a number of times, I cannot miss it now. And I think it works, because he addes other whispers while Rey is inside the DS… as if those voices guide her into the Throne Room. You can miss it once, but not all the times 😄

Sure, now that I know of it, I can’t miss it aswell and I’m actually wondering how I could even miss it the first time. 😃 I was just thinking of our hypothetical first time viewer, who maybe won’t watch the fanedit multiple times.

I’ll do the regular Palpatine version, and then a Nobody version once Dominic has blazed that trail at some point later.

I think the blade whispers is one of several things one would leave a first viewing maybe having missed, after all.

How do we all feel about the newer Ochi ship shot from poppasketti? I think it’s very much improved, but it may be too iffy to be included. He’s said so himself. Eh?
