Excellent work to my eyes! Cannot wait to watch the finished product! Well done.

Honestly, I’m trying hard to understand this project, but it’s tough. It’s supposedly a “restoration,” yet you’re releasing a 3D version of it? Toy Story wasn’t released in 3D originally, so I don’t understand how you can call that a restoration. Also, the color grading on that teaser trailer looks very different from what I remember Toy Story looking like when it first released. What’s your color reference? It doesn’t look like a film print, nor does it look like the digital master. So why is the color so strange? Lastly, the amount of banding on that trailer is horrific. If a “restoration” looks this blotchy and compressed and outright ugly, then what’s the point of it? Don’t get me wrong, I love Toy Story and I love the idea of fixing some of the changes that Disney made to it in later releases. But this project doesn’t seem to be doing it for me. I hope I’m proven wrong though! 🙂I suppose I should wait to see the final product before casting judgement. Thanks for your work.

I used the original teaser trailer video, as reused by the Mouse House as its Disney+ trailer, as my reference (and even I’m certain it wasn’t a perfect recoloring job, I had to separately do each individual shot to get close, and even then I only got a few shots just right), and I used a 10-bit full side-by-side 3D rip as my source. I was planning on recoloring the reconnaissance mission sequence properly first, since that was the first scene to be animated, so I was hoping for a good idea on what it’s supposed to look like colorwise in the current absence of an easily-accessible accurate color reference near me (assuming Disc 1 of the Ultimate Toy Box was taken straight from the original digital files and not a 35mm print; also, I haven’t yet captured my French Canadian VHS, so I can’t currently use that as a color reference, practically speaking). Also, I’m deliberately doing it at a lower resolution (1536 pixels wide) because that’s how it was originally made, and I figured the pre-existing 3D version from 2009 would be a nice bonus, especially for the chance to see it in 3D with 35mm colors.

At any rate, compression was not my intention. Here’s a corrected version of the textless teaser trailer in 2D and 3D, using the exact same videos used to encode the faulty, compressed version, but run through FFMPEG with specific instructions not to compress, unlike last time.

Current version of the restoration’s teaser trailer is v1.0.1. Future versions will utilize an improved color grade, which will be gradually applied as I go through each scene meticulously.

After the 35mm color test disaster from a week ago, based on the Disney+ trailer, I decided to start from scratch and recolor each scene individually, in presumed order of animation. At first, I’ll upload the vanilla scenes in 2D and 3D, then I’ll take input from users here in regards to how they should be colored to look like a 35mm print.

As we speak, I’m rendering another color correction test, this time using my initial implementation of three-strip Technicolor simulation in Blender’s video editor. The cyan filter is set to Cross, the magenta filter is set to Add, and the yellow filter is set to Screen, and the contrast for all three filters is set to 15.

Hey, looks great, I do have some questions. First has your list of Toy Story dubs incrested since you last updated? Second, will you be adding film grain to the final release?

  1. Not yet, but I’ve been looking to add the Castilian Spanish and European French tapes at some point late this summer/early this fall.
  2. Yes.

Ok good and remember you still have the dubs on Disney+.

Wow, great work.
I could supply the Swedish audio for you if you would be willing to include that?

I now have a clear roadmap on how I’m going to proceed with this.

On Sunday, I’m going to release the vanilla restoration, in both 2D and 3D (red/cyan anaglyph), without any fancy effects. This will be v1.0.

Shortly after, I hope to be able to apply the same color correction techniques I’d applied in the Recon Plan C color correction test. This will be v1.0.1.

v1.1, to come out next year, at a date to be determined, will add the French Canadian option, and I’ll also check my restoration against my French Canadian tape to see if any reframing needs to be performed.

Excited for this bud! Is it tricky to reconstruct the original 1536x922 Aspect Ratio? Amazing work so far and I did enjoy the teasers you sent last year! Keep up the good work

All I can do is crop it to 1.85:1, which is how it was exhibited theatrically, but I’ve got the basic structure of the film in its original version worked out thanks to a Snahppy person who’d sent me a rip of his British DVD, which has no doubt been of great help to me even before I found out about, and received, a higher-quality full-length version of the Disney/PIXAR logo for which I had initially requested the rip. (The closing PIXAR logo I took from Geri’s Game, since that was its sole high-definition source.)

Anyway, once released, each version of the restoration will appear on the Snahppy website from Italia. Invitation required for access, or you can PM me beginning on Sunday.

I will PM you on Sunday or Monday as I’m busy Sunday nights

EDIT: Will my US 10th Anniversary Edition DVD work as another source? (I have both the 10th Anniversary DVDs for TS1 and TS2)

Would you also like TS2 as well Threepio?
EDIT: I’m using MakeMKV so will it be okay if it’s a MKV File with all the audio and subtitles?

Yes, please, I might use that for a Toy Story 2 restoration in four years’ time.

Oh, in case you didn’t get the edit on my previous reply, I also want the special features discs.
