I’ve worked on this scene so much and I even found a way to remove Lando, ochi and the dagger up until Rey picks the dagger up in Kylos quarters. Then Landos intro can either be at the base or in the falcon cavalry. It does take a large chunk of the movie out though.

If you wanted to be more conservative, you could just cut the scene with Lando, going from running from the Trooper Lando would have shot, to them stealing the speeders. There isn’t a lot of new information in that scene, other than explaining why Lando is there. Rey already knew Luke was tracking Ochi to Pasaana, how much more she knows from his journals is up to interpretation.

I think the difficulty is we no longer have an opening shot from space to end the crawl on. All 9 films start with a ship travelling by or to a planet in space.

I found several ways to play that scene out but I think I’ve picked the best one where it now looks like Kylo is coming from one side and the TIEs are coming from the other to pin them in. Rey loses control because of fear now, which gives Kylo the upper hand. 😃

I like the idea, but I think Lando’s scene is actually the first time Ochi is mentioned by name, so you’d have to find a way to insert a mention of him into earlier in the movie. Also, Lando’s scene is the source of the film’s only “I have bad feeling about this” so you would have to add one of those somewhere else too.

The logic of the scene has always bothered me. Lando is the choice to go with Luke to track down a Sith assassin? And when Luke gives up to go train the next generation of Jedi, Lando just stays there? For ~30 years? Not continuing to track down the assassin, nor continuing his search for his daughter… just decides to chill the the desert, and wait 30 of the 42 years for the festival?
So many Story and logic issues.
I think the difficulty is we no longer have an opening shot from space to end the crawl on. All 9 films start with a ship travelling by or to a planet in space.
Isn’t Hal’s version supposed to begin with Mustafar? Though maybe someone could repurpose or edit a shot of the planet from space, for any edit that seeks to begin with Rey’s training.
General thoughts
Lando is supposed to stay in Pasaana for like 15 years. Granted, one shouldn’t be looking at extra material to fill these kind of holes.
Yeah the premise of the Lando subplot is strange, but that´s because Lando’s reasoning to stay on the planet was supposed to be to cope with the loss of his daughter and that was cut from the film. I have mixed feelings about cutting Lando’s entire screentime on Pasaana. I know it’s too convenient and makes the overall sequence drag a bit, but we would need to work around the references to Ochi, his ship and his relation to the Wayfinder. And Lando’s cameo at the end wouldn’t have any buildup.
Moving the Falcon sequence to after Rey’s training course feels like a better choice pacing-wise. In that case, would the chess scene still be moved to the epilogue?
