If we’re to have Ben Solo die, I think the best way to go about it would be to have him heal Rey and die while Palpatine is busy turning the fleet into a BBQ. We have the force ghosts appear like normal but when Rey is about to ignite the second lightsaber, Ben Solo’s force ghost appears with his hand reached out just like the rest, ending Sidious with a final blow.

Later he would appear with Luke, Leia ( and maybe Han’s) ghosts on Tatooine.

A more meaningful death and redemption!

Except the area is rubble at this point and there’s no ships above getting zapped, so the background looks pretty different if you move this scene up. I don’t disagree this is a cool idea though. May just look out of place without some additional vfx.

I think kewlfish did a nice job with that aspect, at least for a mockup. You’re right though, the background would have to be blurred a little and the lighting would have to match Palpatine’s Lightning.

Yeah, I still really like this concept. In addition to adding lightning to the background when Rey is looking down at Ben, I have just a few suggestions that I think would make the idea work even better.

  1. When Ben picks up Rey’s body, he briefly looks off to the left. Perhaps when that happens, slip in a shot of Palps shocking the fleet, so it’s more apparent that he’s completely distracted.
  2. We can’t cut out “Rey, the Force will be with you. Always.” which kewlfish’s concept does. Instead, keep that dialogue in (audio only), and have Leia’s “Always” synced up with when Rey’s hand moves and she grabs Ben’s.
  3. I don’t think it’s necessary to keep the POV in space for the entire duration of the voices. Instead, just cut back and forth between space, Rey’s eyes, and reuse the shot of Ben holding her.

Also, not exactly a suggestion, but kewlfish’s concept has the unfortunate side effect of cutting out some of the other Jedi voices. So if there were a way to preserve those, I think the idea would work flawlessly.

Actually, if you’re keeping jonh’s burning homestead, it can work like this:

fanedit

I still think this cue works the best for this scene with the better sfx, and that includes the unused TFA cue, which is fine but not my favorite of the two.

I’d use the unused music cue from The Force Awakens for that scene. The Burning Homestead track doesn’t really work well with this scene, not to mention, it was used in place of the unused cue in Episode VII. What Hal put together with the unused cue and the sounds of Exegol lightning was the best take on the ghost scene that I’ve seen thus far on this thread.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

Personally, I think keeping “the final word in the story of rebellion” line feels a bit unfitting when the ghosts are now the main selling point of the scene. It’s like Palps is ignoring the ghosts on purpose. Jonh’s original version, where that line is cut, and Palpatine quickly goes for the lightning, makes Palpatine look as he’s genuinely reacting to the sight of all the Jedi and counterattacking out of shock/panic.

I’d like it better if he said “…in the story of the Jedi” instead.

I’d like it too if he said ‘Jedi’. But you could also argue by keeping the line in as is that it’s just Palpatine being arrogant. It’s more fitting of his character to be this way than react in fear. This is the same guy who leaped at Mace and 3 other Jedi with lightsabers drawn even though he was cornered in his office and outnumbered. Granted, these are some Jedi Master Force ghosts, but I still don’t buy Palpatine going into a panic here. The dude was just regenerated from dyad Force energy, so if anything, it probably makes him feel even more unstoppable. Either way, my point of posting the clip was to show that keeping that line in with the burning homestead cue is possible – the line can go or stay, I’m good either way.

Yeah, this really should have been a two-parter. Part I ends with Palpatine rejuvinated with the Sith Fleet unleashed and Part II spans a galaxy wide WAR.

2/3 year time jump. The Capital Has been taken by the Sith.
Rey and now Jedi Knight Ben Solo Rebuild the Jedi Order. Finn, Poe and Rose go behind enemy-lines, Storm-Trooper Revolution, Retaking The Capital, All that Jazz.
Ending on a Climactic Duel between the Jedi and the Sith at the former Jedi Temple (now Sith- Eternal Base).
Throw in a young Palpatine clone and you’re set for a duel that will end all duels.

Agreed! I guess I did want to emphasize shock rather than panic. I was recalling how Sith, arrogant as they were, still feared both death and losing their power, while the Jedi knights and masters who came back had managed both “cheating” death and keeping their power, in a way. Besides, this is the first time we would have seen Palpatine acknowledging a Force ghost.

Oh, man, what could have been. An Avengers-ish two-part climax (or a normal trilogy based on that premise) would have been so fulfilling…

This idea could make for a pretty epic collaborative re-writing… 😄

Yeah, I am very bad at editing sound (especially voices… for whatever reason I am not good with 5.1 audio editing) lol… I mainly put the the Jedi Voices in my edit to see how it would look with the voices in… if someone made a better version of my edit I would hope 100% that all of the Jedi voices would be in thaf scene.

Also, love the ideas of switching between space and Rey’s eyes and the glance of Palpatine when Kylo looks to the left. 😀

If that’s the case, Palps’ eyes could be more open to show his actual surprise/fear.

Also a suggestion to you John: fliping the shots of Luke and Anakin when you show their faces for the first time could be a nice idea, in filmmaking, we tend to show things in the most harmic way, as the order of the ghost from left to right is: Yoda, Obi-Wan, Luke and Anakin, is more harmonic to show then in this order instead of Yoda, Obi-Wan, Anakin and Luke. What do you think?
Another suggestion: maybe remove the shot were the ghosts vanishes, its a bit static and we can imply they disappear after Palpatine dies as they don’t show up again.

Otherwise, I’m really impressed of what you guys are pulling of this movie. I feel so much love and passion here. Really looking foward to see how it will evolve.

As much as I think Terrio is a hack, I believe he actually wanted a two-parter… or atleast I think I read that when the slew of information came out after release.

Here’s a quick mockup of using the unused score for the moment in TFA. I don’t think it’s nearly as effective, and it doesn’t sync precisely to it. It would require me to do a whole new release and encode and all of that, which I reeeeeally do not want to do. And it would only downgrade that movie anyway.

On a personal note, thinking back over my long history jacking around with this set of particular movies, I really feel like it’s time to stop. I can’t keep doing this and the obsession needs to end.

I’m going to see this project through, and give it as good a release as we can. I’ll even hold out in order to release an alternate ‘Rey Nobody’ cut.

But once it gets laid in place, there will probably not be a V2. Any and everyone will be more than welcome to take it and run with it to tweak and do with what they please. I’ll put out a lossless audio export and all.

But I have to make a decisive break with this when this is over. Otherwise I’ll see imperfections and be tempted to get sucked back into it. It served a purpose earlier in my life that was helpful, then I went back to it to do it right in 2013, and I’ve been pretty focused since. The prequels have been given several passes, the OT is about as reasonably good as I ever thought they’d be, TFA is wonderful, TLJ is nice, and TROS will be more fun. There will always be unfortunate aspects of them, imperfections, and issues. But I need to let go of them and let them lay.

I thank you all again for continuing to make this last hurrah surprisingly fun, but that’s what it’s going to be.

Hey Hal, thanks for your work and time that you’ve put into these edits. I’m more of a lurker on here and I’ve never talked to you, but I just wanted to say that the work you’ve put into all these fanedits has always meant a lot. Your cuts of the prequels ARE my version of the prequels, and they have been so for years. That includes showing them to friends and family when we watch the movies and I’ve also always enjoyed your commentary tracks as well.

The sequel trilogy has come about with a series of flaws and issues, but I’ve always been interested in all the fanedit potential, and it’s been fun to watch you spearhead a lot of that discussion with your cuts. I’ve always prioritized edits that I feel I could have watched in the cinema, and you’ve always met that standard for me. Thanks for everything you’ve put in these cuts and this community and I’m glad to see this last hurrah through.

I’ve, like, never posted here except to ask where to find copies of fanedits before, and I just wanted to thank you for all the work you’ve put in to your edits. I was introduced to fanedits with your cut of RotS back in 2015, which I stumbled upon by complete accident. I’ve enjoyed speculating about and brainstorming for and following fanedits ever since, even if I never really engaged with the community.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you Hal. You’ve changed my life in a small but significant way.

If you’re still looking for voices for the big fleet, I’d love to contribute. I’ve also toyed around with adding an instrumental, John Williams composed (but slowed slightly down to fit the slower pace of the duel) version of Duel of the Fates to the Death Star II duel, if that idea hasn’t been completely discarded.

Thanks, guys. I say that not because I haven’t enjoyed this! Just that it’s important for it to have a definite, approachable endpoint.

And anyone is welcome to send in audio clips right up until the last minute! I should be able to fold an indefinite number in, worst case being very quiet.

And I’m tentatively planning to have the DOTF over the duel in an alternate audio track at least, so please send anything you have in mind, SkeletonPack!

Adywan is an order of magnitude more of a powerhouse, working with all aspects of moviemaking. I just drag things around in a NLE and ask people nicely for things.
