The Toy Story change was made before the first DVD release. The original opening never made its way to digital home video, only laserdisc/vhs.

The original opening was left intact on the 2000 DVD releases and the 10th Anniversary Edition.

The change for Toy Story’s opening logo occurred in 2009 with the 3D re-release with Toy Story 2 in cinemas and has been that way since. 😃

That Lilo & Stitch change is not new. It was changed for the UK way back then.

I heard about that, but I just checked D+ and it’s there. No real opinion, it doesn’t stick out like some Star Wars changes. Not sure it looks like an oven (at the very least, it’s clear she’s moving a pizza box and there’s no oven door). It be cool if they gave the US version but I think they have trouble with alternate video and have to pick the safest choice. I know they JUST fixe Simpsons.

Does anyone know where one can get restored versions of Disney classics? Myspleen has Song of the South, a Lion King laserdisc rip, but not much else.

Has anyone seen Peter Pan on Disney+ (if it’s there)? I’m curious how that looks compared to existing copies. Still looking to do some sort of restoration to the colors and oversharpening of the Limited Edition DVD.

Same question for Snow White. How does the Disney+ version look?

I don’t have D+, but I assume it must be the same masters from the BD, because both were released under the Signature Collection (Snow White in 2016 and Peter Pan in 2018) recycling their old BD transfers

Oh sorry, my mistake. I must have mistaken it for another movie.

Hey, a little positive news: there’s a 1080p Make Mine Music somewhere around the internet and it’s uncensored.
You can see some screenshots here: https://www.disneycentralplaza.com/t2378p100-la-boite-a-musique-walt-disney-1946

Cool news. All I could find was a Japanese laserdisc. Not bad but the fact there’s an HD version floating around is still a nice find.

That’s what I remembered too. A rare change I don’t like (the fade from the original log and the wallpaper was cute). On that note, I’ve been re-watching all the Pizar films and A Bug’s Life and The Incredibles are the only ones to keep the original Pixar-only Disney castle. All were ones rereleased in 3D so that makes sense.

I recently watched 101 Dalmatians and The Great Mouse Detective on Disney Plus, both looked great in my opinion. There are some strange colors in 101 Dalmatians but I don’t necessarily think it’s the transfer/remastering. I also forgot how incredible the animation was during the Big Ben sequence in TGMD.

I think Cars had it’s original castle too, the 2007 BD did anyway… It was replaced in the 2019 repackage/D+.

Hello,

First of all, thanks for all the amazing info in this thread. I’m trying to find the most accurate/best version of The Little Mermaid. Just curious if anyone has any recommendations on what I should look for? I’m interested in the best unaltered version available. Like most Disney releases, I assume none is perfect, but I certainly welcome any suggestions or recommendations.

Thanks for your time!

I wanted to say thank you for this thread, it is incredibly helpful!

For the first post. Sleeping Beauty’s 1997 Laserdisc is the digitally restored one with rotoscoping. The feature about rotoscoping all the characters out, is a feature on that laserdisc.

So the aggressive restoration it mentioned is from 1997, not 2003. Only the pre 97 versions would be purist, although they are Pan and Scan.

Did you read the first post?
“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937): First ‘fully restored’ by Lowry in 1994. This is also when the Masterpiece VHS and laserdiscs came out. As far as I am aware there is no home video format that has not been reanimated.”
The recommendation is for the least altered version available.
There is no purist recommendation.

I saw the 1980s reissues in the Cinema. Its a shame no pre re-animated “restored” version of Snow White exists on home video. Not even as a bootleg as far as i’m aware. The reissue i saw was in 83 and 87.

Isn’t using the term “reanimation” to refer to Lowry’s (or, prior to the mid-2000s, Disney’s own extensive) restorations misleading (and a bit of an oxymoron), as other than the digitally recreated visual effects in Alice in Wonderland, nothing is being reanimated (or for that matter, redrawn) in the general sense of the term?

“(Digitally) recomposited” and/or “rotoscoped” would be more accurate terms to use. (On another note, I don’t think the 1993 Cineon restoration of Snow White was a reanimation recomposition job, as the restoration featurette on the 2001 DVD states that what was done was “cleaning and refurbishing” the film frame-by-frame)

Have read the first post a lot and it has been an amazing resource for me, so thank you for all the information.

Not sure if you misread my post or not, I was talking about Sleeping Beauty, not Snow White.

Doh. Yes you did. And it’s not like mixing up the castles.

You’re sure that 1997 is when they did that restoration? That stinks.

Then the best untouched answer is a pan and scan laserdisc? I don’t know how I feel about that.

It also makes the 2008 DVD the best digital alternative.

Eek.

I’ll add a few other corrections:

  • The final Diamond/Signature Edition masters were not 4K; restoration work was done at 2K (the scans they were derived from, however, were 4K)
  • Are we sure that the 1993 restoration of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was rotoscoped (using the term “reanimated” is a misnomer)? As far as I’m concerned, the rotoscoping/recomposition method didn’t come into play until the 1997 restoration of Sleeping Beauty
  • The Limited Issue DVDs of One Hundred and One Dalmatians and The Little Mermaid were released in 1999, while the Gold Classic Collection DVDs for The Three Caballeros, Mary Poppins, The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Fox and the Hound, and The Rescuers Down Under, the individual release of the 60th Anniversary Edition of Fantasia, and the 2-Disc Collector’s Edition of Tarzan were all released in 2000 - the initial guide erroneously gives them a release year of 2001
  • One Hundred and One Dalmatians was not an open-matte film; its 1961 theatrical pressbook instructs exhibitors to screen it at 1.33:1
  • The 45th Anniversary Edition of The Sword in the Stone and the Friendship Edition of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh utilize the same masters as their respective films’ 2001 and 2002 DVDs, albeit with different encodes/bitrates
  • “The audio [for Many Adventures’ Blu-ray] is supposed to be good” is laughable, as the 1996 VHS and LaserDisc both have a much wider and incredibly robust stereo mix that sounds infinitely better than that film’s 5.1 remix
  • There was no DTS version of the Limited Issue DVD of The Little Mermaid

You would be correct in believing the only Pre Restored Edition of Sleeping Beauty on Laserdisc is the pan and scan. The last issue was in 1989 with digital audio in Japan. Sadly there are subtitles in the image.

No problem. Here’s a review of the 97 CAV Laserdisc set:

https://animatedviews.com/2002/laserdisc-archives-sleeping-beauty-deluxe-edition/

“A look at The Restoration Of Sleeping Beauty follows, and this has to be seen to be believed. Every one of the 10,800,320 frames of the film were individually scanned into the computers at Disney, after which each character was rotoscoped and removed from the scene. The background “dust busters” would then go to work, removing cell dirt, scuff and film scratches from the images.”

Are there any communities or individuals that share Disney LD rips? I made a few rudimentary ones with my DVD recorder so I could add them onto my Plex Server.

There doesn’t seem to be much on the spleen, besides Lion King.

If you have the japanese one with the 3 little pigs uncensored (both image and audio) I’m a sure taker.
