Hii friends
I remember when i went to the cinemas back in 99,02 and 05 to watch SW Prequel Trilogy and i don´t remember the awful DNR that has been applied to this movies in BR and UHD releases. I would like to know if there is some edit or version in HD quality but keeping the film´s grain strucure and at least reducing some of the artificial look. I own all SW movies in BR but in the end i don´t ever watch them in that official format except the sequels.
For OT i watch Harmy, except ROTJ that i watch an 83-97 edit that uses 4K83.
So for PT i would like to own a BR quality version that is free of that (for me) horrible treatment.

AOTC and ROTS were shot end-to-end digitally and therefore don’t have any natural grain structure on the negative. What you probably noticed in theaters is print grain.

That said, TPM has been heavily DNRd and at least AOTC has also been DNRd somewhat to remove digital noise.

For TPM, there’s Schorman’s HDTV preservation. It’s essentially an HD version of the same transfer on the DVD, meaning there are issues like oversharpening artifacts, a pink color tint and a more closely cropped picture. You essentially have to pick your poison here, and most people think the current transfer looks better, despite the DNR. We probably won’t get anything that truly replaces the official release unless someone manages to scan a film print at 4K.

For AOTC, Schorman’s HDTV preservation is quite good. It looks less DNRd to my eyes and has better colors, but it’s also lower bitrate than the official releases.

For ROTS, you’re not going to find anything that looks better than the official 4K release, but Schorman’s release might have more accurate colors.

Hope that helps.

For my personal edits, I am planning on using Schorman’s HDTV for AOTC and ROTS. I do plan on restoring the wipe when Threepio and Obi-wan are leaving Mustufar off the blu-ray to produce what is basically the theatrical version. But those seem to have more life and better colors than later releases. I’m enamored with CG Yoda, so my go to version of TPM has to include that I have made my own edit which is the theatrical cut using the original DTS audio tracks, but using the BR with CG Yoda. I found an HD cut of the theatrical podrace to get the first shots of that sequence and I creatively edited one of the clips in the extended air-speeder sequence on Coruscant to cover the missing shot so it is all HD. A little noise and grain hid the worst of the DNR, but that one shot of Qui-gon can’t be so easily fixed. It depends on which cut you are after. Three shots from the original theatrical version of TMP only exist in SD so with upscaling I haven’t been able to get them to look even watchable at higher than 720p. But if you just want to put something on, HDTV version is proabably the best looking. Though ZigZig’s recent release of his LD preservation rivals it in some ways for color.
