I agree the scene is funnier with the Gilligan cut (“I’m not doing this!” then smash cut to the data restored anyway). I’d keep 3PO saying “I’m going with Padmé/Anakin…”, and after he asks R2 “I already have?”, maybe have him mention something about “Master Luke”, only to remind the audience that the OT memories have not been lost.

Just spitballing for how to convey C-3PO regaining his prequel memories without then also implying that he’s lost his OT and ST ones:

Keep the scene mostly as is (comedy smash cut and all) but on the “Have you heard? I am going with…” line, have 3PO ‘glitch’ and quickly cycle through a few of his significant previous owner’s names before landing back normally on “Mistress Rey on her very first mission”.
Or at least a structure somewhat similar to this… the main idea being that 3PO’s ownership history database is updating itself in real-time during this moment.

The additional audio could be tweaked to sound somewhere in-between the warbled “memory restoration complete” line and the earlier deep voiced sith translation. Perhaps even wildly fluctuating in speed and pitch with some subtle distortion etc?

It would also act as a partial callback to 3PO’s mistrust of R2’s “famously unreliable” memory banks, as we can infer from the glitching that the data hasn’t been properly looked after by R2 over the years and has thus become slightly corrupted, possibly requiring some further tweaking later on off-screen?

Not sure how feasible this idea would actually be in practice though, there might not be enough time to squeeze anything else in if the line(s) were to stay mostly intact… But with all of the talent on this website, thought I would at least throw over my (possibly silly) idea!

Okay - that’s all from me. Back to lurking and being in awe of you edit wizards!

This is a really cool idea! If someone can supply the audio clips, I’d be happy to try to create the audio effect.

This is all starting to sound very convoluted. It’s a nice idea in theory but it doesn’t seem practical to pull off in a a simple straightforward way.

Hal, jonh,

I made a prores export of the Rey vs Palpatine pt 1, using jonh’s updated version.

I’ll PM you guys with a link to the high quality files. Note I’m using the blue saber version. If any editors like this cut, I can also do it in the purple version.

Below is a normal quality stream for your viewing pleasure:

EDIT: Fixed the bad frame of Palpatine’s face (note the sample below has the homestead music, whoops.)

I should have written it down because now I can’t remember!! Who’s DarthYcey on vimeo? I wanted to ask if you’d be able to export a ProRes version of your sequencing of part 2 of the ghost-relevant scene.

It’s the sort of thing I normally wouldn’t mind just recreating from eyeballing it, but any timesaves are immensely helpful.

Actually, I sent jonh my newly-timed version a few days ago. I believe he’s working on exporting a high-quality version with that sequencing of shots. I didn’t have hi-res footage myself when I threw that together, which was really just a (successful) test of whether shots could be trimmed and/or rearranged to maintain the existing music.

Ah, okay, thank you! It works well but I figured I’d ask after only getting a small part of the way through and being reminded how unforgiving daily life can be and figured you already did the work anyway. Sounds good and jonh can export from the source.

Yeah, no problem. Btw, you’ll probably go a more conservative route with Mustafar, but thought I’d share a mockup I did to extend it and actually further Kylo’s arc beyond a minute long fetch for a holocron. If people could get permission from these guys to actually use the footage in their edits (I haven’t tried), it could be a very useful addition. I’ve made enough test edits at this point trying to fix issues, I should just start a thread and take a crack at doing the whole movie. haha

Nice! Is it 5.1? There seems to be a weird frame after the first closeup of Palpatine.

The streamable is normal quality in stereo. The other one I gave you a link to is a prores video file and a separate 5.1 channel wav file.

Fuckin’ A.

That clip has the line “Let your death be the final word in the story of rebellion.” If whatever music I overlay allows the line to be kept, I think it would be appropriate to have the first line of the crawl use the word ‘rebellion.’

In the theater during that sentence, I expected him to say “in the story of Skywalker.”

Yeah the word Rebellion is more appropriate for what you’re saying in your crawl. It sounds more widespread. Resistance feels smaller.

This is actually fantastic. It’s fanservice, no doubt, but the editing work is solid and works very well to do exactly what you were going for, in terms of extending the scene and what there is of an arc. I don’t know how many editors will want to use fanfilm footage, but nonetheless this seems like the best way to incorporate it if one wants to.

I love how you cut from Kylo holding the wayfinder to Rey reading about it in the book.
Superb editing!

It’s weird to feel a little sad to see how… close to being sort of complete the cutlist is.

I’ll be real with you, it’s gonna be hard when this thing is finished.

If only there was a way to do a big watch party premiere when it’s done. To send the HAL9000 saga out with a bang!

I feel like if the actual fight was trimmed more (and if Vader’s lines were cobbled together from actual James Earl Jones lines) this would work quite well. The vocal impression really pulls you out of the scene.

personally, would eliminate the line of rebellion, Burning’s music fits better, and looks more scary in Palpatine

Yeah I will have to see what feels right, or what fits the music choice. I’m reluctant to reuse Burning Homestead because TFA did, but we’ll see! It’s only be the 385th callback to that movie after all.

This is absolutely fantastic! Overall I loved it and it really makes me sad that we didn’t get something of this level in the final cut. For the final movie in the Skywalker saga it makes me sad that the only call back to Vader (apart from the mask) was that one line on Exegol.

I do have a few nitpicks. First, the quality of the clips in the flashback are a little… off. I’m guessing this is due to the change in colour to try and get them to match TRoS?

The sound effects during the battle with the cultists either need to be ramped up or cut entirely.

The Star Destroyer that jumps out of hyperspace is a Final Order ship but then the TIEs are First Order flying towards Kylo’s destroyer. Bit confused by this, I’d maybe remove that Destroyer jump.

The fan film fight could probably be trimmed a little. Too much time with it and it’s becomes more obvious that it’s a fan film. I am surprised at how well it works though. Clever idea using the colour change and that clip of Kylo shaking his head chefs kiss

Otherwise though, bravo on some incredible editing!
