This sounds like a great project, I just wanted to add that the DVD version of season 1’s “Telltale Head” is cut by almost a minute compared to the broadcast version. It’s all in the final scene. I wanted to create at least a patchwork fix for myself, but the only copy I could find of the uncut footage was on Youtube, which was good for confirming the exact details of what is missing from the DVD, but such terrible quality that it could not be used. There are other small discrepancies here and there, such as the “Tourette’s Syndrome” joke, but I believe “Telltale Head” has the only significant omissions on any of the sets.

Personally, I’d love to see just a frame of the restoration. It would be a good way to give people an idea of what it’ll look like, without doing an ENTIRE clip.

This is an amazing project! I’ve been a collector of the Simpsons for years and
always wondered why such a classic show was never given a proper restauration;
especially in regards to the “line flickering” / “Klasky Cuspo” effect.

Regarding the “Telltale Head”, the german DVD has the complete scene as aired back in
1990. The only difference between these two versions, aside from Barts longer speech,
is Homer walking across the screen in the final shot before the credits - this is part
of the shorter version and is missing in the other. You could create both versions
separately or make it an “integral cut” with the longer speech and Homers walk combined.

I have the german DVD right here on the shelf. Would the longer version of the “Telltale
Head” be of any help to you?

That is interesting i did not know it had been release. Yes very interested.

The quality is a lot better than VHS but a little below the NTSC DVDs; all
additional scenes have optional english subtitles and the audio commentary
has been edited to fit the longer version; they even removed the line about
Homer walking across the screen in the final shot so it would make sense…

Also it is 25 FPS, but with a little work the scene is quite usable. Also
it explains why the mob suddently forgives Bart… Would you prefer the
entire episode (remuxed MKV/944 MB) or just the last 3 minutes? Do you want
the full english sub and the audio commentary? Where can I upload the
file for you?

Maybe this also could be of help - The Blu Ray releases of seasons 14, 15, 16 & 17 contain 9 of the older episodes cleaned and upscaled to 1440 x 1080 (There are also two later season episodes not otherwise released on Blu Ray). Here’s the list of episodes available from those discs:

Hate to be “that guy”, but has there been any movement on this project since the last update?

Sounds super interesting! A loving fan restoration is sorely needed on these. Even with the slightly sharper Disney+ transfers being an improvement over the FXX remasters (and the apparent joke-killing cropping/aspect-ratio issue being “fixed” by early next year) there’s still all of the same issues detailed in the OP present within them, cropped or not.

Hope this is still in the works!

Sort of, the big hurdle is the enormous amount of processing involved. the plan has been to upgrade my machine to handle this, Then I thought that the disney+ versions would be the 4:3 upscales we see on the BluRay masters.

Im interested to know if they will be doing 4:3 upscales or simply the Standard Def DVD masters that appeared on Simpsons world. Personally I think both will be inferior to the DVDs. The HD remasters on both the BRs and Disney+ are really overdone. The biggest problem is it takes soft blurry detail and rasterises it to sharp defined detail, which makes for an inferior presentation.

When i watch the DVDs on my massive 65" TV, they look fine. A little soft but definitely watchable. Id prefer to watch them than some over-processed garbage.

A set of 90s NTSC TX masters on Betacam/Digibeta would make my day however.

I have The UK PAL DVD “Risky Business” which includes the episode “Marge Gets a Job” and retains this joke, unlike the R1 Season 4 DVD Box Set. I’ve just edited that portion of the audio into the NTSC version. I just slowed down the audio by 4% and pasted it over. The Smithers dream sequence of Mr Burns is still edited on this disc though.

This disc also uses the stereo track rather than the 5.1 track.

This looks quite good I can not seem to find any dot crawl or rainbowing and the colors are vibrant as ever and this is series four!

It is without credits on the screen when all other versions of the episode contain text on the screen throughout this moment. HMMMMM?

Oh wow, if this is the upscaled 4:3 versions coming to Disney ill be pretty happy. Its still from the original TX masters. And in that shot of the waffle machine you can see traces of the line smearing, as well as a jaggy frame that Im aiming to eliminate.

Just saw some of Disney+'s uncropped Simpsons. Look pretty good (although I liked the cropped versions save for the cropping). I’m not sure if these supersede this project but I’m happy (and you should at least do Stark Raving Dad as it’s still not available).
