Info Wanted: D+ 4k Skywalker Saga to editing format?

Hi all at originaltrilogy. I’ve recently acquired the 4k Skywalker saga films, converted back to SDR and had planned to create a LUT to convert the colour map back to its original state (or close.) Proving very difficult, wondered if anyone had a LUT or any tips? Many thanks.

There are two ways you can do this.

Use a LUT - age created two or three tonemapping LUTs that work well, or

Just use Davinci Resolve’s tonemapping functionality. It works pretty well too.

In either scenario you will need to make adjustments to brightness and contrast on top of your tonemapping.

Hi legacyfilm,

Good luck with your project!

I don’t want to discourage you, but be aware that you’ll face a lot of issues, such as :

  • you’ll have to previously define what is “its original state” (there is a lot of topics about this single question on this forum, and there is no easy answer)
  • a single LUT probably won’t work, since the 4K was regraded on a scene by scene basis (so you’ll need several LUTs)
  • furthermore, it seems that the new 4K version was retouched with Power Windows: some parts of an image have been regraded differently than other parts of the same image (see ChewieLewis’ message about this question)

The best way to watch the original film in their near-to-original colors stands probably in the 4Kxx, the TN1 or the Despecialized Editions.

Hmm, that’s exactly the kind of anomalies I were expecting. Very grateful for your reply, thank you. Going to keep digging, perhaps I can look into creating some LUTS for the community.

Don’t hesitate to read the many topics already dedicated to this question, and especially the incredible work done by DrDre.

What you are trying to achieve has pretty much already been done by oohteedee with his D+77 and D+80 releases.

I’m working on D+83 using the process I mentioned above.

I’d encourage you to check out these releaaes and if you like the colors in them. It might save you a lot of work and hassle.
