Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Redux Ideas thread — Page 91

I’m curious to see what people might come up with putting the helmet scene at the start. The fact that he knows Palps is behind Vader’s voice is definitely an important question. In my edit I tried to solve this by having Kylo hear Palps’s voice when he touches the helmet, so basically it’s like Kylo was checking to see if what he said was true.

Here is a SUPER rough implantation of the helmet scene moving up I put in Hal’s thread:

The mirroring of the Vader Castle does make it seem like its a new shot (along with the removal of Krennic’s ship)

What can also help sell that too is if you don’t use the “whole” clip.

Here is a quick and dirty rough idea if moving the Vader helmet scene towards the beginning. As for the middle of it, I didn’t do anything to it since I wanted to show just the “kylo” footage with Vader’s helmet. Obviously the idea would be to alter all that flashback/imagery/sounds/etc. to fit more on the lines of “Vader” guiding Kylo.

Just super rough idea playing with a bit this afternoon:

As for what you did, I like the concept a whole lot. It is a MUCH better implantation than what the movie did with it. I admit, it still makes you wonder why use the helmet if Kylo already knows Palps is behind it … not his grandfather.

Interesting. I have to say though, for me personally, “why is Kylo reforging his mask for seemingly no reason?” was a bigger wtf moment in the theater than “why is he touching Vader’s helmet after knowing that it’s really Palpatine’s voice speaking to him?”. I wish we could add the mask to Kylo during the Mustafar sequence and have the reforging take place in between, but I think that would be pretty difficult.

I would put a filter over that to indicate it’s a vision. Not because it isn’t obvious but just because it looks strange not having one. It also clarifies that your jarring cutaway is not part of the vision. Yeah, that scene transition is rough. You need an establishing shot.

On a different note, how would you guys feel about TLJ ending with Kylo finding Palps, but we don’t find out it’s him 'til the end of RoS. Basically, we don’t see him, and his only line would be “I have been every voice you have ever heard inside your head.” Since the line is said in the voices of three different characters, people won’t just immediately assume it’s Palpatine. Then again, maybe it’s too obvious that the master manipulator of this trilogy would be the same guy doing exactly that in the first six films.

Is there a shot of that cask with the doors fully closed before they start opening?

I wonder if, after the tilt down where the stars disappear but before the planet & ships come into view, you could have the doors open on the mask. It would need some nimble music editing, but I think you might be able to go straight from the tilt down to that thing opening up with a pretty clever cut and some brightness/contrast adjusting on the surface of the cask itself.

I also wonder if, opening straight on Vader’s burnt mask, you could combine parts of the Mustafar minute with his visions (it would need more cutting back and forth, and decreasing the amount of time spent watching him touching the mask - split those shots up into smaller cutaways, basically) and his taking his hand away and whirling out of the room would then cut straight to him flying to Exegol.

Maybe that’s the only real way to make the Mustafar Minute make sense without having to create establishing shots in VFX - build it into visions/flashbacks, so its disjointed nature is absolutely presented as intentional, and not a result of bad editing making the sequence incomprehensible.

If the combined vision/mustafar killing spree ends on him grabbing the wayfinder and cuts back to him taking his hand off the mask and leaving the room, it should work.

I think keeping the Vader helmet where you originally have it is best. It gives Kylo motivation to rebuild his helmet. And I totally picked up on him testing to see if it really was palpatine.

Here’s an idea: what if Kylo builds his helmet on Mustafar?

Opening: exterior of a First Order Ship
Cut to: Vader’s mask container opening and Kylo touching it to receive a vision. At some point during the vision, Palpatine’s “Mustafar” from ep III can be heard. End with Dominic Cobb’s idea of “you’re a creature in a mask” “yes I am.”
Transition to: Mustafar from space, the original TROS opening.
Cut to: edited shot of Vader’s castle from Rogue One.
Cut to: the pieces of Kylo’s helmet being dumped onto a table.

From here, the helmet reassembly and Mustafar massacre scenes cut back and forth to each other as a montage. This leaves us with two potential ways to end the scene:

  1. Helmet is fixed, Kylo picks up the Wayfinder, and the original TROS transition of the wayfinder to Kylo flying to Exegol.
    or
  2. Kylo picks up the Wayfinder, Helmet is fixed, and the scene ends on the shot of the Helmet. This allows you to move to a different scene if you want and push the Kylo’s trip to Exogol (and thus the Emperor reveal) a bit later into the movie.

I feel this plan uses the fast-paced nature of the Mustafar sequence to our advantage, instead of trying to just drag it out into a full scene in of itself, while also adding even more weight to Kylo’s rebuilding of the helmet, since it’s now a ritual [implicitly] taking place within Vader’s own castle.

The only issue I can see, assuming the Rogue One shot can be properly edited, is that Kylo’s trip to Exogol still occurs without the helmet. But maybe people could forgive that since it’s such an important meeting?

This is the sort of stuff I wanted in episode IX.

I also really wanted cockpit cameos during the final battle, so many characters could have showed up there. felt like a big miss.

Has anyone managed to edit this out yet? I’ve been trying but can’t seem to find a fluid cut. I didn’t really like either of those Leia scenes tbh but I’ve already had to cut a few of her scenes.

Awesome work!!! Love what you’ve done there.

May even work better without the ring, establishing the ethereal nature.

Alternatively, add a bit more space… ness to it? The simplified ring looks fine in Rebels, because it’s a simplified art style, but I think that in a realistic style, trying to go with the aesthetic Fallen Order goes with for its meditation is probably closer to the mark.

The easiest thing to do is just cut out the back and forth with the lightsaber so that Rey holds onto it the whole time, that’s the most thematically consistent with TLJ anyway. There’s no reason for her to suddenly feel unworthy of a lightsaber she’s been using for a full movie already.

I was experimenting with it last night. I am working with Luke building his lightsaber in a deleted scene of ROTJ, and Rey lifting the lightsaber in the hut from the end of The Last Jedi BTS reel from D23 2017, to create a scene of Rey constructing her lightsaber.

Oh I’m excited to see this! When you say it’s Rey constructing her lightsaber do you mean the Legacy saber or the one from the final scene? I think it would’ve been great if they had actually explained in the movie that Rey learnt to heal by using the force to reforge the blue kyber crystal.

Exactly! Plus that continuety error drove me crazy once idir_hh pointed out.

I managed to find some other similar BB8 footage from the caves that fit perfectly. It now gives Leia handing Rey the Saber later way more gravitas.

Not getting any quote response notifications. Does that not happen on this site?

As interesting and impressive of a task that is Jonh … I am the guy who hated everything about Rebels so anything that plays tribute to it, especially the “World between Worlds” and Time Travel crap … it’s a nope for me.

However, again, impressive as always and am still absolutely amazed at what you can do! The Force Ghost stuff you did is masterful!

The World between Worlds as it is called shows up a lot in Rebels. That is where the fan film got the idea. However, in Rebels the people in the nether realm do not actually have any sort of blue tint, they just are in that realm. I think make Luke appear normal and having his surroundings be all space would go a long way to helping the scene

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I got that vibe from the first frame, Jonh. I’d like for this to become live action cannon. Loved the addition of this story and they did a great job on the voices.

Have you played around with softer shadows on the last closeup of your segment? Could be my screen but Lukes features look a little harsh. It has a great feel to it though.

it would be great if someone does a good audio mix

Amazing work with the Jedi Force ghosts, man…but I really don’t think the audio needed re-mixed, the scene just failed to follow through on the VOs that got Rey to her feet in the first place. The goosebumps really hit now with the music and Force ghosts showing up. This is exactly what I was expecting in theaters but was totally let down. But great job man. Oh, and I re-edited this sequence using your purple saber footage (which I also love). 😃 Rey really IS all the Jedi now… Check it out…

^ Are you saying that version stays timed to the original scene’s audio with the new visuals being worked in? Without a direct comparison, that version plays very nicely.

The first time I saw the movie after Palpatine explodes (2.0), I imagined a bedtime narrator saying, “And then huge rocks and granite flew into the people that were watching and chanting, because if you believe in yourself boulders will smash the heads of your enemies.” Weird to be paired with the yearning of the binary sunset piece.

My stance on revising fan edits.
