It’s not her identity that’s the issue, it’s her own acceptance of that identity. Earlier in the film, there’s a scene where an alien child asks her what her family name is and she says her name is “just Rey” in a sort of sheepish, slightly forlorn tone. At the end of the last film, she came to the realization that she’s a “nobody from nowhere” but we can see in this scene that she’s still not quite comfortable with that newfound knowledge. It’s still a point of embrassment rather than pride. By taking it as a badge of honor at the end of the movie, she’s fully actualized and completed her arc, whereas taking the Skywalker name feels to me like it’s a step backward. It’s her clinging to an idealized version of the Skywalker legend as she did in the first half of the Last Jedi. She needs to be comfortable being “Just Rey” before she can be “Rey Skywalker”.

These are all just my opinions of course, but I cared a lot about this character and was disappointed with the direction they took in tieing her identity to other people, whether it’s the Skywalkers or the Palpatines. As we see in the prequels, the Skywalkers and the Jedi as a whole have a complicated, messy legacy and while Rey learned from and was inspired by them, she could have also been the start of something new.

Perfect analysis. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Here’s a rough idea for changing the music in the final scene:

As nice as this is, I wouldn’t end the Saga on character centric theme. The Force Theme, as overused as it is, is perfect because it’s universal within the Saga.

I disagree, I see it as important for the forward-looking nature of the ending. We’re used to the force theme with the binary sunset, but now it’s Rey’s turn.

+1. It’s the perfect end theme to juxtapose with Rey Skywalker.

Just Rey is fine. 😉

(Seriously if this annoys you I’ll stop talking about it in your thread. I just think a Rey nobody edit isn’t really a Rey nobody edit if she’s still Rey Skywalker in the end.)

It doesn’t bother me. But I don’t see how that’s a punchy line to end on if her identity wasn’t an issue throughout the movie. I just don’t see myself going that route, but I’m know for conservative edits.

It’s not her identity that’s the issue, it’s her own acceptance of that identity. While I don’t disagree with your take on “Just Rey,” I don’t agree with how you feel about “Rey Skywalker.” The beginning of the film isn’t just her being ashamed of who she is, she’s thinking she’s inadequate. She doesn’t deserve the saber. To me, her taking the Skywalker name is her saying “I am good enough to be a Skywalker, I’m not just Rey, I’m more than that.” It’s a similar sort of growth I think.

Yousa point is well sid.

And I agree with Dom. I don’t think any of the possibilities are phenomenal so I guess I err on the side of leaving it alone and decry liability.

That’s fair. I think it’s what the movie was going for but it didn’t land for me. I definitely felt something was off in the theater but my thoughts on this weren’t really crystallized until I watched this Just Write video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD5mLw0A8vI&t=7m25s
The whole thing is great but I just linked to the part I feel is relevant here.

Here are the scenes or pieces that would be affected, unless I miss any:

  • Rey and Palpatine meeting (should be easy to handle through just deleting lines)

I will always have a certain fondness of the line:
“Long have I waited, for my grandchild to come home!”

Solely because when I watched it in the cinema an elderly woman started bursting with laughter. 😂

This is looking great. I actually think there isn’t enough engine glow in snooker’s. If anything I’d push the engine glow even more so that one doesn’t immediately notice any inadequacies with the model.

I agree.
This is another reason I like the previous clip a little better, I also think the movement doesn’t quite work as beautifully as it did in the other clip… But props to Poppasketti for giving it his all and trying something new! 😁 👍

Haha! Those are good points! I can bring the engine brightness up, although if you look at the rear shot of the falcon at the beginning of the scene when Rey is arriving at Tatooine the glow is much tamer (more realistic if that’s a thing?). I think the stronger glow looks more like the OT than ST, which certainly works.

Yeah, I’m still newish to cinema4D, but I think I can smooth the motion. I had to recreate the path from scratch so it’s a bit of a do-over, but I think the better model is worth it!

Also snooker has a new version that’s quite promising too so we’ll get this shot looking as good as possible!

That’s amazing. This is why I’m okay with Darth Maul’s appearance in Solo.

Someone in the row in front of us just went, “whaaaaaaat?”

So did everybody else (in their heads).

Because I’m a stinky nerd who watched Clone Wars and Rebels, i wasn’t too shocked

It was fun hearing a guy in the audience yell “WHAT?” though

I watched both of those too, and was confused because he’d already died in those shows with a completed arc.

Guys, did anyone consider doing Rey Solo instead of Rey Skywalker maybe?
Cause from the in universe point of view, it makes more sense. Han Solo was kinda a father mentor figure to her in E7. He brought her to the resistance then he saved her. And she basically inherited the Falcon After His death.
Then, Leia Organa Solo became a mother figure to her. She was her Jedi Master as well.
And of course her dyad in the force, Ben Solo. The Solos were more a family to her than Skywalkers.

Plus it would be a nice pararell to Han Solo. I mean, he was Just Han before some guy came up with the Solo surname.

A question about the use of the fleet came up a few pages ago, and I’m wondering if there are any thoughts around trying to make it clear it is just an old Imperial/Sith fleet that got squirrelled away like the Katana fleet in legends?

(In general I’m annoyed they borrowed so many elements from the Post-RotJ Legends material, but so haphazardly done.)

I personally really like Rey killed her parents, it is narratively stronger, ties into her “killing” Chewie, and makes her waiting for them for years extra tragic.

Another question I had that may have been answered somewhere in the thread is:
is anything being done about Rey using a broken lightsaber like it’s no big deal? I saw a bit ago folks were discussing adding an instability to Anakin’s saber to make it clear it isn’t just magically fixed after being shattered, but was anything decided?

I had been really hoping that in RoS we’d see Rey using her new lightsaber, instead of only seeing it briefly at the very end. A thought I had would be digitally replacing the saber so it is actually Luke’s lightsaber (therefore allowing Rey’s “I will become worthy of your brother’s lightsaber” line to actually make sense) or making it her yellow lightsaber and just cut the handing it back and forth to Leia silliness

Regarding the Skywalker Saber, we talked about adding some kind of effect to it to make it feel slightly different, though we never really pinned down an effect that just clicked with anyone.

This is NOT intended to represent a reservation I have about using the Falcon ending shot. This is such a nerdy thing to say that it would have rightfully been shouted down by people if this had been in the movie.

But…

The Falcon leaping right into hyperspace within a few seconds of taking off makes Han’s efforts to escape from Mos Eisley in ANH seem overly cautionary. (Doesn’t seem like entering hyperspace from within an atmosphere or planet’s gravity would normally be a good idea.)

BUT, it’s a perfect visual ending for the story. Just felt obliged to throw a neckbeard comment in for devil’s advocacy.

Might I draw eveyone’s attention to the moment in TROS immediately after the “You are a Palpatine” reveal… Finn grabs Rey after she jumps out of the docking bay and, guess what? Poe jumps to lightspeed within Kijimi’s atmosphere!!! 😁

Here’s a new pass! I downloaded a new 3D model of the falcon and brought it into cinema4D and recreated the flight path. After chatting with snooker, it turns out it’s the same model he’s using. I think his engines look better, though! So we’ll see what options we come up with!

you are a fucking master !!! 😃

my suggestion is,
add a little more light to the reactor, and when it passes in front of the sun, give it a little glow, like this, https://www.thealexandrian.net/images/20160505c.jpg
you may have already thought about it

the rest is perfect !!! nice job!!! you are a genious!!! 😃

I do not know if this has been commented, but I still think about the end without dialogue, about eliminating the old woman, (I know that the title of the movie refers to this moment) but in the opening crawl, you could add something like: Now skywalker is synonymous with hope

Well, would anyone be willing to play with a few things?

  • removing the little crackle of electricity as we first see Palpatine’s hands

  • Making Rey’s hand-lightning in the desert somewhat yellow

No more electricity

If the Falcon chess scene is moved to the end of the movie, it gives something of a tangle with Klaud.

Either the earlier scene begins with “hey Klaud hows that air conditioner coming,” or with the better starting point of Poe in the cockpit directing things. The shot of the Falcon heading toward the iceberg could be extended to serve as the longer, take a breath establishing shot that the hyperspace shot used to provide. Without that initial intro of Klaud or his continued presence in the lightspeed skipping sequence which I will not feature, he’d be too weird to have just in what’s left. I guess he could still appear at the end as a weird rando for Merry to hug, though.

Since krausfadr has removed Klaud anyway, that material can be used to just cleanly remove him.

JEDIT: Sorry, looks like krausfadr removed him via editing rather than FX. I know there’s someone out there who has, so perhaps that could be obtained.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I really hate to lose Klaud, though 😞
