One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Checking the audio on the OT Blu-Rays, the 7.1 mix is nothing more than the crappy 2011 6.1 mix with the original rear centre channel duplicated to make it 7.1. And that channel may as well not have been there anyway because it contains about 6 effects throughout the films and complete silence in between.

Ripped ROTJ to my drive ready for me to start work on it. The frozen grain is horrendous. Also the DNR has been applied way to heavy in some shots resulting in a completely unnaturally smooth image. But in some shots, there are large blobs of noise/ grain in the dark areas. For example, just check Vader’s body as he walks down the ramp at the beginning of ROTJ

Isn’t that shot a notorious problem spot on ROTJ? I think there’s permanent film-damage baked into the negative that makes any cleaning/fixing near impossible.

Not to say the frozen grain and DNR problems aren’t real problems - they absolutely are, and one of the worst side-effects of the 3D fad reaching out from the past to mess up this set.

So how exactly does frozen grain end up being there? Is it some denoising artifact, or did they just use a single frame of grain when regraining the footage?

I’m pretty sure it’s a denoising artifact – think about using temporal averaging as a noise reduction strategy, and how that can go wrong with a very noisy source (if you consider grain to be noise, which such systems do).

It’s the same as the cap from earlier in the thread that prompted the comparison. I just grabbed that one, and then grabbed all the others from what I had here.

I’m not 100% whether that cap was made from the 4k, or the 2019 blu-ray. I sorta feel like anyone trying to cap anything from the 4k disc is entering into a crapshoot since UHD is, frankly, kind of a mess so far as actually seeing what anyone who shot the damn thing meant for you to see. Even good UHD transfers seem to be kind of “up in the air” as to whether they look like the movie was supposed to look.

It really does seem to me like the primary instinct behind UHD’s creation was to match TV makers’ notions of what makes TVs look good, and not to capture what filmmaker’s notions of what they want their films to look like.

I hate new technology that is so inconsistent. One reason why I am not planning on getting the 4k box. I’m waiting for a US release of the BR box.

Thanks for this. The 2019 cap definitely has more detail than the 2011 (individual drops of sweat can be seen between Luke’s eyes on the 2019 cap for example), so if this is the BD then it’s a definite improvement over 2011, though to me it still seems quite drab compared to 2011 - however I appreciate that caps don’t always give an accurate representation.

The 2019 BDs seem to be much more uniform in presentation than the UHDs no matter what. The biggest problem seems to be that Reliance went HAM on the transfer with noise reduction since they were primarily remastering for 3D conversion to be applied after the fact. Reliance is pretty heavy handed with the DNR even when they weren’t protecting for 3D gimmickry, so in scenes where the 3D probably wasn’t going to be very prominent, you end up with a nice transfer that makes the movie look better than it ever has on home video. And then in the same transfer you end up with SUPER-processed shots and sequences that are just smeared and artifacted to hell.

The color grade seems to be the first time since 1997 that we’re getting somewhat CLOSE to what the DP and director’s intended for their films to look like, and the 2019 Blu-Rays seem to be the best way of seeing what that looks like, for now, since the UHDs seem to mandate users do some tinkering on their side to figure out how to get it to “look right.”

I did a color correction for ANH in collaboration with Stotchy:

The aim here is to maintain a similar color palette, but with improved color dynamics.

It sounds like we need to rip the new BR’s and 4k discs and apply a lut to make the 4k version match the colors of the BR. From what I’ve seen the 4k versions have crap colors unless you discover what tinkering you need. Virtually all the 4k screen caps I’ve seen look like crap. Utter crap. So washed out and unlike any film I’ve ever seen in a theater. Natalie Kalmus would be appalled.

From what has been shared, I can’t see it. If you can’t even capture an accurate image of it, what good is it? It has the resolution but if this community is going to make use of that, the colors you claim to be seeing need to transfer over or they are useless. So if we can’t transfer them any other way, we copy the BR colors to the 4k image. Should be easy. I don’t care for 4k because of all the problems the format seems to be having. We can’t burn 4k disc, we can’t transfer HDR colors, can’t even get the right colors in screen caps.

As far as official releases go, in my opinion, the new 4K discs are the absolute best in resolution, color and sound. I have my Harmy discs for when I just don’t feel like tolerating the special edition changes, but the gorgeous colors and sounds of these new discs undeniably bring a huge smile to my face, even with George’s tinkering.

I’m sure they’re not perfect because nothing ever is, and when something better does come along, I’ll be right there watching that too. Until then, I will enjoy what I have and be thankful they did as good of a job as they did.

Yes, the better colors alone of the new 2020 1080p blu-rays are worth the upgrade in my opinion. The HDR of the 4K UHD is worth upgrading your TV and player to 4K with decent specs (check technical reviews). I would advise anyone to just purchase the 4K discs to future-proof with eventually upgrading equipment in mind.
