My idea was to imply that tracking Snoke’s miscellaneous stuff would lead him to Palpatine, like following a marionette’s strings to its animator.

It’s a great idea and I really wish they had a prolonged prologue montage of Kylo doing some detective work, searching ancient temples across the galaxy.
Bummer.

idir_hh, I recorded with a Yeti Pro into Adobe Audition, pitched it down, and then added a couple distortion effects to it. In premiere, I also added a couple sounds from other helmeted Kylo dialogue to texturize it a little.

Thanks a lot.

I’d say that if you want to give Kylo Ren more lines, you could take audio of Adam Driver from other movies and apply the mask filter over it.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

The Kylo redub is promising, maybe it’s not that hard to reframe the backstory through Kylo’s new dialogue, and this will be useful for both Rey Nobody and better-done-Rey Palpatine approaches. Of course, few things are more promising than a Hal/Poppa collaboration.

And I dig the new Force ghosts version, making the actual ghosts subtler looks better and less distracting.

That’s some very nice work. However, I think the only way I would actually want to use it as if it is so subtle that it’s almost hard to notice on the first viewing.

This is fantastic! I don’t suppose you’d be willing to add Qui-Gon? He’s the only one missing here to have achieved ghosthood as mentioned in the films no less, and he kinda deserves it.

Looks promising! I’m intrigued to see where you’re going with this.

Thanks idir_hh it was your great idea. Just don’t get too excited about any VFX coming from me, because this can certainly be done well without it. When Ren told Rey in TLJ her parents sold her for drinking money we believed it based on her reaction; we didn’t need a flashback of them living it up in Mos Eisley. And so it can be the same for TROS: Resurgence and any other edit which may go this route.

This is really well done! It gives Rey some early motivation/intrigue in the film, and it’s also just really well cut together!

Edit: Haven’t seen Don’s version, I’ll have to go back as I must have missed it.

Personally, I prefer Dominic’s version of the initial vision. And I’m not sold on the snake being frightened by her inner darkness, either the idea or how effective it’s possible to get it to be.

And here’s a rough cut of Rey on Tatooine to show that the scene can work without any force ghosts:

I like it, but you would probably need to flip the last two shots. When she looks at the suns (formerly ghosts) the first time, she’s looking screen left, but in the shot of her walking towards the sunset she’s moving screen right anyway.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Dom’s version has a great addition of Rey intercut with Ren. I used Dom’s force lightning idea for mine. But I wanted to focus on the loss of friends for my edit so I used Finn.

Love this! Definitely what I was actually expecting when I saw the film for the first time. I hope multiple fan editors here adopt this in their edits or something similar. Great job!

I think of it like this. A snake is a symbol of true evil. Because of Rey’s inclination to become even more evil and powerful than Palpatine (evil incarnate) himself, the snake does not harm her and leaves. This imo is much better than shoehorning a force healing (snake) to mentally prep the audience for a later force healing (Ren).

In theory it’s a good idea, the execution needs a little more work though, I think a change in the music is needed as well as losing some of the flashes, also the snake turning its eyes blue probably gives the wrong message, maybe you could turn them bright red as if in submission to her dark presence.

What music would you add to the end as the snake is leaving?

I actually think there are some interesting mythic parallels to Rey healing the snake. There’s quite a few times in the film where Rey can take the violent path, but chooses the peaceful one instead.

The music that’s currently in the scene when the snake decides the leave the crew has a kind of heroic good guy feel to it, I don’t have anything specific in my mind but you need something that is darker that would evoke fear and urgency.

True. Tho in my edit she is not taking the violent path either. It’s a slippery gray slope to the dark side in keeping with themes of TLJ.

Poppasketti, how did you put that together particularly the voice itself?

So I tried to follow an online tutorial, but it only got me so far, and I had to layer more on top of it. First, I recorded my voice with a Yeti Pro and applied the effects, which I’ll list below. Then, I had to supplement some sounds from Kylo’s actual dialogue (Y’s R’s and T’s) to fill it in. I also duplicated my voice clip and cranked the gain way up to try to create some clipping distortion as well, and then turned the levels on that clip way down to balance.

Here’s some specifics on the effects, though I’m not sure how well this would work as a template:

You can use Adobe Audition and even Premiere, which has Audition’s filters. My effects stack is as follows top-to bottom:
Note: first I would gain the audio up so it’s clipping or almost clipping.

  1. Pitch Shifter (set to -2 semitones for my voice)

  2. Distortion (cranked the positive way up; this is the filter you have to play around with the most as it’s very hard to dial in. What helped me the most was keeping the positive smoothing at 0, while the negative smoothing and time smoothing at 30)

  3. GuitarSuite (compressor: 60 / filter: rez / type: lowpass / freq: 2800 / resonance: 85 / Box: Non-Amp Clock Raduio / Mix Amount: 50. Make sure the bypasses are unchecked except for the Distortion Bypass)

  4. Amplify (set to -30, the distortion filter really cranks up the volume and needs to be offset, and if I touch the clip gain it changes the other effects)

  5. Parametric EQ (brighten the sound by bringing the 3000hz and 9000hz frequencies up 5gb)

  6. Studio Reverb (set preset to “Great Hall”, move Dry to 100 and Wet to 50. NOTE: I think it sounds better if this effect is in the audio track mixer and not the clip)

This is great. Thanks for the guide. I don’t think I sound like Adam Driver at all, but I may have a go at this myself just to see how effective this could be across different voices. I know every voice will require slight tweaks, though. It also might be useful to change some other Adam Driver dialogue.
