I think - given the limited footage - the best way to handle Luke is to frame him as the old Obi-Wan of this trilogy. He’s assumed to have been heavily involved in the “stories we don’t get to see,” and his death is a very natural self-sacrifice that echoes Kenobi’s in ANH.

So basically: remove Johnson’s “Jake Skywalker” mode.

Sometime down the road, I’d love to see a trilogy in which a post-ROTJ Luke, Leia, Han, and Lando are recast, and we see them in adventures that bridge to the ST.
