Actually, as with much of what MS does, the Anti-Spyware product was not their creation. They bought it from someone named Giant Anti-Spyware, I believe.
I think Ad-Aware is good, but I've seen that you need more than one in my experience. We use Ad-Aware and a product called SpyBot, in conjunction with an ad/cookie/web-bug filter and we still come up with junk in there. MS is good because they're currently offering real-time protection for free.
