Even if you believe Star Wars is just supposed to be about the Skywalkers, there’s nothing wrong with having the last trilogy be about the influence of that family and their story. That’s still ostensibly about them.
Rey Nobody, a girl who becomes a hero from being inspired by their legend, is a meaningful way to cap off their legacy. It’s a lot better than a daughter inheriting her father’s responsibility and just seeing it through. (also why Kylo/Ben not seeing his through was interesting!)
Exactly.
Rey then still stays almighty powerful and there is no reason for it if she is no one. The hero’s journey does not work that way in my opinion. She becomes a deus ex machina to destroy Palpatine because the Skywalkers weren’t able to do it in the first place even though they did in Episode VI.
The thing is, if Palpatine would have been integral in VIII already and Luke or Ben involved in striking Palpatine down once and for all it would have worked somehow, but Ben is reduced to a joke in the end saving the most important girl in the galaxy that didn’t earn anything because she has no real journey in VIII and IX, not on the scale of Luke or Anakin. To me it still is too much identity politics involved instead of a solid character arc.
I mean I really like Daisy Ridley and she is doing her best and she mostly delivers in her performance. But the underlying agenda, the screenplay Johnson put on paper in VIII just don’t make the story worthwhile. I hoped VIII would answer some stuff but it only derailed everything giving Abrams nothing left, so he and Terrio came up with, Snoke was a clone, Palps was involved all the way and Rey is Palpatine’s clone daugther /granddaughter and Lucasfilm is retconning even that because they or some people at least figured out that they messed up and even the identity politics are not working at all.
We need all the available Mark Hamill footage of Star Wars and other movies in 1080p, movies like Slipstream, Time Runner and so forth, there might be material for the flashback scenes and maybe even stand-ins, deepfakes and so forth. But again, I’m only just starting to play with the idea.
