Just a collection of thoughts I had on the recent Red Dwarf special that aired this past Thursday

Another jolly old boys from the Dwarf outing, fair, but flawed, and a lot of padding and squandered opportunities.

The first fifteen or so minutes can definitely go, it’s full of scenes that don’t lead anywhere (what was with that awful sex change operation exchnage?), how about we start the story off with the crew finding Holly’s back-up floppy? Also we can cut out the Cat, Kryten and Rimmer trying to convince the cats Lister isn’t a god.

I’d like to see if it’s possible for the cats to somehow NOT lose their faith in Lister, as that is such cliched writing, I’d also like to end the story on Rimmer actually dying after he saves the ship from the bomb. Cat lamenting Rimmer’s loss and asking who he won’t like now still fits with the storyline of Rimmer feeling unloved.

I realised that if I remove Lister’s followers losing their faith, I’d have to remove the whole portion of the plot that deals with the Anubis stone…which of course is the macguffin that leads to Rimmer becoming diamond light and saving the ship. Rewatching the episode I still think it’s entirely possible to make it so the 'Dwarfers never give up the stone when they first confront the cats at the Iron Star, and it still plays a role later in giving Rimmer his powers.

I was thinking of using something from the first five or ten minutes of the episode, where it’s just Kryten, Cat and Lister together, and placing it towards the end, repurposing Lister’s directionless behaviour as being more to do with the fact Rimmer is gone than being the last human alive. On further inspection, I think I probably could use the minimal amount of the sex change operation joke to close the episode out on a wacky note.
